Shanghai Disneyland will close in effort to contain coronavirus

Posted | Contributed by Tekwardo

Shanghai Disneyland will close its gates on Saturday in an effort to stop the spread of a new SARS-like virus that has killed 26 people and sickened at least 881, primarily in China. It’s not known when the theme park may reopen.

Omicron is not likely a problem if you've had a booster. That's outstanding news, but it would certainly be better if more people were already vaccinated.

I'm boosting this weekend. I'll be good to lick handrails and dry hump again by Midnight Mass.

RRR>unboostered dry humping

We sure get a lot of mileage out of our memes.

No meme is truly worthwhile unless it is beaten to death.

But was the meme black?

Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

...and did it like pancakes?

Never thought I would see dry humping and Midnight Mass in the same sentence.......

It's official, poop police found omicron in the OC today!

And in a couple of days, it's become the dominant strain detected in your OC poop:

Omicron Is Dominant in Wastewater Samples in Florida County

I get that we're early on in this, but I hate how the narrative (in general, not this story in particular) has shifted to number of cases rather than number of deaths. Cases aren't scary. Deaths are.

If this spreads like it has been and the low death rates hold up, then, like Dave said, this could be a very positive development - the initial push to endemic.

With that said, from the article:

A sampling this week showed that omicron represented almost 100% of the strains in the samples from the wastewater facilities, Orange County Utilities spokesperson Sarah Lux said in an email.

It's a different story when it comes to people seeking treatment for COVID-19, officials said.

“Those who are hospitalized are being primarily infected by the delta variant,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said Wednesday at a news conference held at the Orlando International Airport.

CDC panel recommends Pfizer or Moderna vaccine rather than Johnson for people 18+.

And today I read that we Moderna vaccinees (did I just invent a word?) don’t have as good a chance against the Omicron variant.
All three of my shots are Moderna.

I feel like this has sort of been an unspoken thing now for months.

Brett- Agreed. The single dose Johnson vaccine has always kinda come across as better than nothing but not as good as the others.

One of the things making the omicron discussion murky is the fact that we're seeing hospitals under strain again:

If omicron does not come with less severe disease, regionally things are going to be very bad again for the healthcare system.

This one breaks it down in a way that makes me feel pretty okay about continuing to live as "normal" as an about to be boosted blue county dweller

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/17/briefing/omicron-spread-red-america.html

One telling detail is that Covid deaths in both swing counties and heavily Biden counties have not risen over the past two months, even as nationwide case numbers have surged.

And for Gonch:

In heavily vaccinated communities, rising caseloads don’t automatically lead to rising death tolls

Here in NYC, the (soon to be ex-) mayor is saying we aren't going to shut down again, because we know more/vaccines/etc. But the Rockettes just cancelled their Christmas show, Alvin Ailey cancelled the rest of their season, and my little theater company postponed the performances of our kids' plays because three or four adult cast members were suddenly having to quarantine.

So at the moment it looks like there's a reality of Covid making it impossible to remain fully open because people just can't work, either because of actual sickness or precaution. If, in fact, we have to find an equilibrium where we live with Covid, it isn't yet clear to me what that looks like, and it's going to be rocky getting there.

If you're getting your info from the NY Times, you're already handicapped.

Anyone who walks into a hospital and tests positive for Covid, whether hospitalized or not, is counted as a hospitalization. This is the reason those numbers cannot be trusted.

There's a balance to be had between risk assessment and everyday life. The media and many in government that keep promulgating there will never be such a balance. As if Covid-19 will ever come to an end. It will not. It's an endemic, not a pandemic any longer. It will ALWAYS be with us.

While you may want to give all of your constitutionally protected freedoms away to your government, I and many others, will never submit to such a thing. I don't really care if YOU have a problem with that. The Constitution was never meant to be suspended, even if momentarily.
