Of special note, it's almost Christmas, and only 54% of Ohio's population is vaccinated.

We're at 62% here in Flori-duh! 64% here in the OC. I think we're getting a bump with the kids now, who have been eligible for almost a month.

Also here in OC, they're quite literally testing our poop for the virus, so I'm sure we'll see omicron soon. I've said it before, but I think it will be telling to see what the Disney parks do. Remember, there was a point where they were maskless last summer, on the honor system for the unvaccinated. But you know, a third of the adults were statistically lying at that point.

The University of California has been doing that for about a year. They've installed automated testing units at strategic access points on campus. The last building I worked at before I retired nearly a year ago had one.

New York has issued a mask mandate for all public indoor spaces (unless actually eating or drinking), vaccinated or not. We are at 70.4% fully vaccinated.

Japan is now closing borders for a month due to the new variant concerns.

I think this Omicron variant has everyone spooked. I know of a few break through cases already. So maybe it’s reason to be cautious.
We’re at a much lower % vaccinated here in Ohio, something like 58%. And we’ve had the mask mandate here in Columbus for quite a while now, while most of Ohio does not. (I had a sneaky feeling that had everything to do with Ohio Stadium and the need to resume OSU football at The Shoe…)

I was disappointed to see how lax Ohio has been with this since the beginning. And, it was almost as if I was offending people for choosing to wear a mask when in close surroundings. Coming back up at the end of the week...mask and all. Frankly, I'm going to need the mask to keep my face warm.

And some people think Ohio has been too strict.

If you go back to the beginning, I think I would place Ohio on the stricter side of the scale (or slider). Remember when everything was closed except Walmart and Lowes? I'm not privy to what all the states were doing, but I remember Dewine pissing off all the Republicans who were clamoring that he and Amy Acton were being too strict and traitors to the GOP.

I'm not sure what more Ohio could have realistically done.

But, as we have been over, our individual experiences have been vastly different, even in the same state. I don't have a job where I am in charge of other people in close live quarters, and 100% of my coworkers that I do interact with have worked together to keep our little bubble as safe as humanly possible.

California is now mandating masks indoors for all people for a month Dec 15-Jan 15 due to an increase in COVID cases (up 47% since thanksgiving, supposedly).

This is not easy for decision makers. I have had a mask requirement in place again since late August when we started spiking here again in Florida. Around Thanksgiving I had elected officials asking me if I was going to let that requirement lapse as the numbers here in Florida started to decrease. (In my community the City Manager is in charge of emergency management and makes most of the decisions regarding emergencies). I've held the same position since the beginning which is: follow CDC guidance. We followed it under the Trump administration and we are following it under the Biden administration.

You know what? The CDC guidance was sound. They kept encouraging masks in indoor workspaces for the vaccinated and the unvaccinated and given where the country is right now that was a pretty good advice.

I am currently requiring vaccines or weekly testing for those who are unvaccinated. If the CDC directs that "vaccinated" means three doses then I will change our requirements as well.

With the possibility of a Pfizer "pill" to combat serious illness I can't wait to see how many anti-vaxxers line up to swallow a pill that was developed quickly after saying they would not trust the vaccine.

What makes this difficult, as we all know, are the political undertones (and overtones). I am fully convinced that, if we stripped away the politics, we would be

They're already taking Ivermectin, injecting monoclonal antibodies that are made in a lab, etc.

Don't forget bleach.

I always got a kick out of the people suggesting that Ivermectin was being discounted as a possible treatment because doctors were trying to help big pharma by pushing the vaccine. As if Ivermectin was grown in a garden and sold at farmer's markets.
