Save Cedar Point

Moosh are you talking about Cedar Point with a new B&M?

Thanks,
DMC

No, he's talking about Knott's with their new B&M *something* (inverted is the most popular rumor, but I wouldn't count out a floorless either...). Speaking of that thing, it's Nov. 14, I thought it was going to be announced by now?

OMG I have a new sig!!!
I find the park less pleasing to be in than on my first visit back in 91-95. Part of its the crowds but part of it is Tearing every friggin tree out and painting stuff purple and green.

CP used to have personality and charm, Now it has little of that and funky looking skyscrapers.

Chuck, who feels they did the same to dorney.

Three or so things I miss the most are:

Earthquake or The Pirate Ride (CP still needs a dark ride BAD!!)
The Aquarium or Jungle Larry (it was so nice to see something or do something else besides rides.)
IMAX...it was so cool to have an IMAX inside an amusement park. Granted it needed some upkeep, but it was always fun to go see. I would have REALLY been upset with the new transition if it wasn't good, but I must say, the Snoopy Rocks on Ice is CP
s best show. *** Edited 11/15/2003 4:50:30 AM UTC by RollerCoasterGod***

The Nov 8th announcement date posted on RRC was incorrect.

Genuine side question from a SFGAm (Home of, at least formerly, the largest Imax screen in the world) home-parker: Is this uncommon?

As for the IMAX theaters:

I would say now a days it is uncommon for theme parks to have them. From what some people down at COSI in Columbus, Ohio have told me, Ohio used to have the most IMAX theaters in the state at one time. I don't know how it is around western states but most IMAX theaters or OMNIMAX (domed type IMAX theaters)are at museums. Though there is this great IMAX theater in Worthington, Ohio that has some GREAT 3-D movies...Which is what I wish CP would have turned their IMAX into. IMAX 3-D movies are awesome!

I hope cedar point leaves the trail alone. I dont think millenium force hurt it very much because its station and que area were kinda before the actual trail started and i think the tunnel kind of adds a nice touch, but it does take away from that yesturyear fealing it once had.
All I can say is pictures, pictures, pictures. Take lots of them, spend days out of the summer shooting everything. I got some new photo albums this week and I was going through old pictures and WOW what a difference.

Other than the Boardwalk, which is virtually devoid of trees, and the new plaza near La Revolution Cedar Fair has left the rest of the park as-is and tree-filled. But I worry about the area near the old Church where the new B&M is going. I hope they keep a lot of the trees there.

Yeah, when we were at Knotts last March we noticed the difference between the look and feel of the Boardwalk area (or should I say "Knott's Cedar Fair," as we called it), and the rest of the park. I hope they can slap that new coaster in without changing the feel of that part of the park, too. But it seems like people are bringing up the same point: if you get out the scale and weigh "new coasters" vs. "scenery," the coasters will always win, and we're happier in the long run that way. This is especially true at a park like Knotts, which really does have a space problem.

I would have rather seen that stretch of beach visible from the park. Some seating and trees could have been placed there and it would have been a nice place for people to sit. W

There used to be trees and benches there before they put WT in. I used to sit there for a little bit each day and watch the lake. The trees were pretty small, but every year it was nicer as they got bigger and provided more shade. And then, they were gone.
I didnt really go to that part of the park very often before WT was built because that area was always (IMO) an eyesore. So putting in a coaster actually helped the area instead of ruining an area which it probably would have done if it was plkaced elsewhere.

Yeah...I agree with the previous points...if a park in the CF chain needs to be saved, its Dorney. My first visit was a few months ago, but man, the front midway is just pure concrete hell. Of course, I was at Knoebels for the first time the day before, that may have had something to do with it. :) The walk by Thunderhawk to Steel Force was very nice, though.

On a side note, what's up with Dorney's soundtrack? It seemed like the whole park was innundated by lots of top 40 ballad crap....I mean, Celine Dion power ballads just don't scream "lets go ride Talon" to me. I understand that parks can't exactly cater to my personal taste in music, but it was the first time I had ever been to a park where the music was so distractingly awful.

While it has been extensively redone, the area around Thunderhawk at Dorney is in the older section of the park. The hill that the log flume is on is also an older part of the park. The trees you see there are a bit older, and to me that part of the park has the most "personality".... some (but not much) of the old traditional feel remains. I hate to see what becomes of the area around the flume with the removal of Hercules and the installation of more steel.

The area on "The Hill" by the entrance... the midway toward Talon and then the midway that cuts off past Wild Mouse and to where (what is left of) Hercules sits, is nothing but pure concrete. No personality, no soul, no nothing but a seemingly endless expanse of concrete... If it were not for Talon being up on "the hill", my visits to Dorney would center on the Thunderhawk / Steel force area and away from the strip mall appearance of the "front" portion of the park.

Truth be told... It's partly because of this minimalist approach to landscaping and this "strip mall" type of appearance that makes me have very little desire to visit another CF park any time soon.

(Edited to correct spelling... and make Antuan's little joke rather meaningless)

Yeah, I guess with all that walking on concrete your feet are bound to give! ;)

Fate is the path of least resistance.

I haven't been around long enough to know about CP's past but the park is packed with trees. CP has a hard time to build such massive structures without knocking them down. Jeff said about magnum, the trees were planted when the ride opened and now those trees look great and cover the queue like they were meant to. I do like to see new rides but I do like to see CP keep the atmosphere it always had. Look at the suroundings of MF, WT, and TTD. They planted many trees and in 10-15 years those area will be filled in and will look great. The beach midway was always dead and look ugly but in recent years that midway has made a big turnaround. WT and the GW make that area look better than it has ever been. Chaos and Troika have also made a difference. I think instead of building more rides and craming the park to the gills to keep the record for most coasters/rides. CP should keep the record for the best park. They should start getting rid of old/aged rides; DT, WildCat, and Wave Swinger. These are all rides that have history and have their fans, but face it, the park must move on. No amusement park can make it without adding new rides and keeping up with todays standards. The park must remove and rebuild. It's hard to let go of the past but CP is preparing for the future.
Gomez, I agree with you about them really turnning around the beach midway, but it still has aways to go. While I do enjoy a ride on disaster transport, and believe its a great family ride. I think the park could really benifit from tearing it down and putting something new in its place. Possibly a big wooden twister (which would be great anywhere but especially on DT beach side location). While i would hate to see a coaster go I think in the long run it would be for the best. They may help that area look better and atract more people. ALthough this may be a good move by the park (IMO). I dont however see this happening, even though it may be a big step restoring that area of the park to the beautiful place it once was.

Thanks 'Tuan...too funny! :)
I totally disagree with Gomez on removing Wildcat. However, if they would built a good wooden twister on Disaster Transport's spot, I would have no problem. The Cyclone used to be there, maybe a clone of it or something. By the way, I know you'd have to be pretty old to have, but did anyone here happen to ride the old Cyclone?
On virtual midway under the gemini midway walt has some great pics of the gemini midway before TTD and how great it looked.

some of the pics are after ttd but a lot of them show the way it looked before. I personnaly like it much better before TTD
