Raptor Clone

Bigal00004, I'm very sure that Raptor isn't the clone.   It was custom designed to fit into a tight space at CP.  The track layout goes around existing buildings and uses the only open space available for turnarounds and such, thus the almost out-and-back design.  And before anyone gets on my case for calling it out-and-back, I mean so only in the way that it follows the same path back towards the station from the block brake as it took to get there.

Very creative name for a coaster...  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that its namesake is from the Japanese legend:  Orochi, an eight-headed dragon that threatened to destroy the land if it was not given sacrifices of young maidens.

I thought a Hydra was an 8 headed dragon.  Perhaps Hydra translates into Orochi.  Hmm.
Anyone know anything about Japanese folklore?

I've also heard that Katun is very similar to Raptor. Anyone have any additional info on this one?

I don't think so. Although i've never ridden Raptor so who am I to say!! But I can tell you Katun is a fair bit higher and the layout is very different, but with the same sort of  elements. The straight drop out of the brakes in the back row is superb!

It could be said that all B&M inverters are similar, but Katun frankly is quite different. The low flat turn that ends the ride looks like it might be the most intense element of its kind.

True! And boy did it suprise me! The best element on Katun though is the spiral up into the brakes. It is so intense and completly disorientating, I had not got a clue what happend the first time I went through that element!!!
I wonder if it was the same price ?
I am sure it cost more because of the transport costs alone.

Thanks for the info, guys. I've always wondered that since I read it (still can't remember where) and could never find any info on Katun other than rcdb.

According to my wife, Orochi translates into "really big snake."  It exists in old Japanese literature.  I don't admittedly know about the Hydra.  I have seen it in video games, though!:)

I thought there was a clone of Raptor that was mirrored...anyone heard of this?

Well, i ithnk that it is good that Japan has a clone of Raptor. I mean, not everybody can just drop a couple thousand to go and ride the original. BTW, that really is a horrible paint job.
hey SFMMANIAC FYI, and totally off topic here-  the ride you are refering to about that lady who fell out of her seat in your signature area . that ride is not called vertigo. it is called PERILIOUS PLUNGE at Knotts Berry Farm. maybe you should think about changing that due to false information.

What is so bad about an all white paint job? Have you seen pics of the all white Japanese coasters at night? They light them up with different colored lights and it looks awesome!

skytrack, SFMMANIAC's point is that Harold Greene of Cannnel 2 News got the names wrong. All the media cares about is the death and who will be sued as a result of it. They care little for the facts.

"X" marks the spot in 2001!

Here you go LG; Katun, as from Extreme Rides

Quick links; panorama, insane final helix (reminds me of a certain orange, yellow & blue coaster ;)) & straight drop out of the midcourse brakes. Check out Somecoasters for the rest. Be quick to check out the site's monthly videos of Mirabilandia for footage of Katun in action before they're removed. You have to see the 2nd video, it shows off Katun's ridiculously tall Zero-G Roll (but is it really 0G?)

That's what I'm talking about! That final turn is stunning! And yes, it does remind me of a certain other inverter in PA.

Soggy brings up an interesting point about the benefits of having a white ride. Ever notice how great some of the S&S towers look at night? White works when it comes to lighting, because you can then make the ride any color you want.

BTW & off-topic, what is up with the Stargates on Katun as seen in the helix pic? Surely MGM holds the rights to them. (Stargate SG-1 is my fave TV show.)

Thanks for passing the links to those pics along, Taipan. Exactly what I needed. Consider me better informed :)
You're welcome, mate.

WOW, Katun is one awesome looking coaster. Jeff is right, that final helix looks quite intense being so low to the ground.

Who cares if Raptor is cloned as Orochi. It's on the other side of the world. If Cedar Fair put a clone of it in one of their other parks you would be screaming that Cedar Fair is becoming like Six Flags.

I can't stand it when there is a clone of a rollercoaster. It would be nice if every coaster is different. There is no point in going to a different park to ride the same rollercoaster.
