Pop-up ads

You may be right Jeff on the lingering ad dealie. I spent about twenty minutes last night just clicking around and seeing if I could get that ad to popup again... no luckie. If it was a leftover from another site, sorry if there was any confusion.

Yeah I tell ya the internet sure isn't what it used to be. It seems that the cost of running a website went from free to thousands of dollars in a short period of time. We currently are using two services, Burst media and Doubleclick.. and those two help pay the bills. But for some reason a part of me tells me that you should be able to get some kinda kickback from parks (other than free admission... that is if you get that). Hell.... I don't know. If I happen to run upon another service out there that's good at serving up some cake for ads, i'll be sure to pass it along to ya. :)

I was using Doubleclick, and they paid pretty well. Then they dropped me because of poor click-through rates. The irritating part of that, however, is that the reason the rates were so low is that they weren't filling all of my inventory. The rest was filled with a default that was displayed an enormous percentage of the time, and naturally people who see that day in and day out aren't going to click on it. So for that reason, the CTR bottomed out, but not because of the quality of my audience.

That's when I started the club, which served two purposes. The first was to reduce the site's reliance on advertising, the second was to give enthusiasts an alternative low-cost club.

No... this site NEVER displays more than one pop-up per page. Nor does it ever prompt the installation of spyware. Get your facts right before making judgement.

Ok, uhhhh, is that why I have been getting hit with 4-5 pop-ups each time I visit the homepage?

Why does Riddler's line move so slow?
It's sponsored by AOL. ;)

I just came through the main page to the forums, browsed through several topics in the GB and TR forums, and only had 4 pop up ads, all on seperate pages. I think it is just luck of the draw sometimes. Occasionally, I'll get more ads one time than I do another. Again, griping about the popup ads here is like griping about how hot it is in August. It really doesn't do you much good. Best thing you can do is just live with it or join the club.

i dont see the problem that you guys are all complaining about. if your that lazy to close a popup window then get off the internet. no matter what site you visit nowadays theres a popup at almost all of them. you can b*tch, whine and moan about it but unless you want to help the site out by donating some money to remove these ads, dont complain.

and fyi this site never displays more then 1 ad.

As a fact: I get two pop-unders and one superstitial on the homepage.

If I wanted them gone, I'd go for the $20 annual membership.

Your analogies, make no sense. A pop-up killer isnt like stealing food, or a parking space, (I dont know where you came up with that one). Its more like ignoring billboards as you drive down the freeway, or changing the channel when a commercial comes on during friends. If you wish to hold your contentions constant then I'd suggest that whenever you watch any of the basic network tv stations you not change the channel, other wise it may be stealing! gasp! Ignoring ads isnt stealing cause theres nothing to take except our attention. Jeff still gets a check, I'd assume, and I'd download one of those deals except that im so damn lazy. Guess I could have done it in the time it took me to write this but what you gonna do?

That may or may not happen. He said himself those comments about "stealing" were not serious. Its just a matter of getting people to watch commercials. This case is also different than napster because there the actual artist themselves were not earing money, here its just airtime for commercials, the companies are not losing money as a direct result of peole not watching their commercials. All I'm saying is that if theres a way around unwanted advertising, I would take it. Call me a freeloader. I guess companies will just have to think of new ways to feed us this crap, theres no doubt in my mind that they will, and we will continue to find ways around it. Thats just the way things have been working and will continue to work until the end of civilization.

Freeloader.

There's a difference between changing the channels while watching television and killing pop-ups. In no way am I preventing my local television channels from gaining revenue by changing the channel, because advertisers choose to advertise during a certain program based on the ratings that program receives. They are not paying the station per views. That comparison is null and void.

I don't like pop-ups anymore than you do, so I paid the $20. Ignoring the ads is one thing-you are not obligated to click through. However, don't take money out of Jeff's pocket. That's just being a petty low down weasel.

How wrong you are though.

When you change channels during a TV show, that station is still getting paid for the time it sold to the company with the commercial.

When you run a pop-up killer you deny the website you are browsing from an impression. Ads are sold based upon the number of impressions they receive. Therefore, you just stole the equivalent of one impression from the owner of the site.

What I dont' like about some of these pop up ads is that some advertisers stick more advertisment and pop ups within the Pop Up. Sometimes its real bad casues my computer to have a stack dump crash on it. This what annoys me the most I think these ad people should not allow pop ups to do these things.

ON another note TV and Radio ads have gotten so bad that they use emrgancy vehice sounds to get your attection and in fact now they are using the Emergancy Alert System sound on these ads. I really think something should be done about using false EAS alarms to advertise. by using this method is cheap and should be illegal and banned by the FCC.

Mark, just so you know, that article was BS. The television industry is scared, just like they were when the VCR was new. DVRs are the same, fast forward through commercials if you want, or watch them if you want. VCRs do the same. I'm sure 99% of US households have VCRs, so, sorry, that article is also "null and void" if we can skip commercials on VCRs, and in how many years, it hasn't effected the way we watch tv.
I'm not the one who posted the article, so I'm not sure why you directed that at me.

Being a club member, I was quite surprised by the pop up ad that appeared when I clicked on the thread link in the "Something for Jeff" thread. I'm curious as to why that happened. Does anyone have any idea?

Hmm just my .02 but the I hardly ever get popups on here and I don't use a killer. Hey its all good you gotta give a little to get a little

Pointman, the reason a pop-up appeared is that link went to the "www" site, not the "club" site...

I bet if more people clicked on ads less ads would appear because the advertising agency would make more money. I dont mind pop ups. Sure they can be annoying but other than being a nuisance what are they really. If I had to pay for my bandwidth and possibly space (thankfully there are still a few free webservers out there) I doubt I could do it even with the pop up ads.

Thanks Jeff for this wonderful site and the ability to join the club to get rid of the pop ups. If there were pop ups that I wanted to click on I would.

A pop up that came up last year saved me over $200 on a flight to london on British airways(thanks again Jeff) so I always try to check them out you never know it could save you money instead of getting bothered from them.
