Pop-up ads

I keep getting hit with pop-ups when I surf the site. I've been here for about 15 min. and have closed four already. I haven't been to the site in a while (over a year) but last I knew you were trying to move away from pop-ups. Is this still the case, or are they supposed to be there?

It's all I can get at this point. Without them I would've had to close shop ages ago. If you join the CoasterBuzz Club, you can enjoy the site ad-free for a year.

Wait a minute....you don't put links up to sites that use two or more popups but you yourself have 4 popups on your site? How hypocritical is that?

No... this site NEVER displays more than one pop-up per page. Nor does it ever prompt the installation of spyware. Get your facts right before making judgement.

I view pop-ups as a minor, and neccesary, annoyance. It's not that bad; I mean, if you're not interested in what the ad is selling, all you do is click the "close" button or right-click on its box in the taskbar and click "close".

-----------------
"What am I doing?"
"OoooohwhAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Just get pop-up stopper if it's irking you so bad.

To clarify, I never get hit with more than one pop-up at once. I think what happens is when I hit my back button or otherwise visit a page I've been to I see another ad (not always the same ad, though). But they aren't a major annoyance to me so I just close them without paying attention to the exact page I'm on when they come up. I wasn't writing to down the site, it's just that last I knew Jeff wanted people to let him know when pop-ups came up so he could do something about them. I guess those responses are what I get for leaving my disclaimer off...

Pop up stoppers are essentially stealing. Join the club or close the ads. Why is that so damn hard for some people to understand? Better yet, why do we have a topic about this once a month.

Because people still think that the Internet operates on good will and not money. Enjoy the days of free content folks... they won't last forever.

I don't mind the average run of the mill popups that have been on GTTP and CB for quite a while, but I did mind the one that popped up on GTTP earlier that I couldn't close as it drifted slowly across the screen asking me how many stripes were on the American flag.

As Pop-Up stoppers may be considered stealing, do you consider pop-up ads an intrusion? If I do find a site with too many pop ups I have absolutely no guilt or problem with firing up the pop-up stopper. CB's are usually fine, but sometimes I simply don't feel like closing a new window everytime I visit a page.

I'm surprised that you feel that, as you of all people have had to restrict access to video.

Hey StandUpFan do Jeff a favor. If you are going to ***** about pop up ads then become a member. For 20 dollars a year I would pay it ( and have ). You have no reason to complain when you can take 20 dollars become a member and enjoy the perks also.

Have a nice day.

I don't think StandUpFan was *****ing about them. He hadn't been here in a year and was seeing if what was going on with them because when he left, Jeff was trying to find a way to get rid of them. So read the post before YOU ***** at him.

As for the topic, I would personally love to become a Club Member, not because the pop ups annoy me so much, to support the site. But I am only 15 and have little work, so I need to spend my money wisely. I think Jeff provides plenty for free and those pop-ups are just a small annoiance that I can deal with.

Pop-up stoppers aren't essentially stealing, they ARE stealing.

You know what? Paying for parking at parks annoys me. From now on, I think I'll just drive right through the gates and not pay. After all, you don't have to pay to park at grocery stores. Why should theme parks be any different?

And speaking of grocery stores, I have a right to eat. I'm just going to take whatever I need and not pay from now on. Eating should be free!

Speaking of annoying, I just visited your site for the first time, Brandon, and your flashing "WINNER!" ad damn near brought on an epileptic attack. You are infringing upon my rights under the American Disabilities Act and I demand that you make your site epilepsy-free.

Some people...

LOL Mark!

You have to put up with the pop-ups unless you are willing to pay for a club membership. Be glad it isnt mandatory. Banner ad revenue has dropped to almost nonexistant. Sure, some sites can live off of banner ads, but usually those are sites that have their own ad system and can get a wide variety of sponsors to advertise. I dont believe that option is availiable yet... well, not feasibly. I dont see Cedar Fair or Six Flags paying for ads here on this site... Maybe Vekoma... after all they need help. ;)

All kidding aside though, pay for the membership. Its worth it. No more annoying banners, you can use the Track Record feature, and it keeps this site running.

Hey man. Wanna buy some weed? Crack? Freepass on Millennium Force? I got the hook up...

Thank you RubberDucky...at least one person understands what I was trying to get across. If the pop-ups annoyed me so badly I would either put up the $$ or stop visiting the site. But I haven't yet joined and I'm still here (much to the dismay of some). Conclusion: the pop-ups aren't so bad.

This thread was intended to be a simple question as to whether or not the pop-ups belonged. As I see it, after Jeff's response explaining why they come up all the rest of this stuff is unnecessary. Sorry for creating another trash-filled thread, guys. I ought to respond to some of what's being said but that would only add to the problem...

I do make visitors become a member to view the videos, but you won't find a single pop-up ad or perk you have to pay to use on my website either.

I normally don't mind the popup ads but something very strange just occured while posting on the forums. A popup ad came up that spurred (5) brand new windows along with a automatically queued download for a file that in no way shape or form had I clicked on a link to download anything. If I had had IE automatically download the file in the background, God only knows what kinda damage that woulda caused. I'm not blamin' you Jeff, just bringing it to your attention. If you're still using Burst as your ad provider I would investigate into that ad (can't remember which one it was that spurred it but if I find it again I will flag it and notify you).

As for popup killers. I personally don't use them because I know how to quickly hit ctrl+w before the window popping becomes too sporradic. I usually have never had that problem on this site (until just now). So I let the ads pile up.

Yes running a website costs money. The site I run dishes out well over 2k a month for bandwidth.. the only way we could afford to keep the site going is through these stupid a$$ ads. Pop-ups are a horrible thing to have to inflict on visitors to a site, but having a site still operating fully is the price some of us have to pay. And while it's a forced medium to keep the sites alive, I personally don't think it's 'stealing' to use ad killers. If it were stealing, I would be hacking into the members area and enjoying the ad-free environment. In order to steal something from a website there has to be something that requires you paying for it to access it, and quite frankly I have yet to see a pay section on the either the forums or the news. Having both the news and forums readily available for anyone to read without a login or password constitutes free. At least in my opinion that is.

Keep up the goodwork Jeff and crew.

CoasterBearVa: Great site, I've been there many times. Yours is one of many that convinced me I didn't need to do an X-box site myself. ;) I feel your pain, and it's good to know someone out there can appreciate the situation I'm in.

Regarding the crazy thing you encountered, I'm going to guess that maybe you had one of those secret windows lingering the background from another site, but if it was one of mine, I'll be sure to nuke it. I've been experimenting with Fastclick to supplement the sad inventory from Burst, but the quality is low enough that I'll probably get my $50 and run.
