PKI invites enthusiasts for farewell last rides on flyers

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

After about 70 years in the Cincinnati area, the historic flyers at Paramount's Kings Island will be dismantles and moved to another park. PKI invites enthusiasts for last rides at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17.

The best thing you can do is to swamp PKI's guest relations with complaints about the rides removal over the next two weeks. Every complaint has to be answered by the park, and if they get swamped the higher ups will know about it. Let people know in the park that they are leaving and to go up to front gate guest relations to file a complaint about the decision. PKI listens to its customers, and if enough file formal complaints they may take a second look. But it is up to you, if you're at the park this weekend get as many people as you can to go up and file a formal complaint. This is the Flyers only hope.
I usually only go to PKI 2 times a year. (once for BeastBuzz and sometimes in the later weekends of the season) I always hit the flyers for several laps trying my darndest to get "snapping" down pat. Now I'll be the first to admit I'm no high quality snapper but that's not what's important. What is important is how much fun it was even to wait in line and watch grown men and women my age get on that ride with their young kids and show them the fine art of snapping. Those kids would get off that ride with smiles from ear to ear right along side their dad or mom. (oddly enough, I did notice there were more dads doing the teaching than moms) I don't have kids and more than likely never will, but the thought that I could pass along something to them like this fun on the flyers was always in the back of my head. I have to admit that I feel let down in a way by whoever decided to move that ride. I dunno, it's just so sad to me.
I've ridden the flyers at Great America and the fascination depicted by some of you is lost on me. I overheard they are different rides, but educate me. What is the hype?
Instead of relocating (Easy enough for this ride) Or replacing. (Cheap enough for a corporate) The take the one ride thats been thrilling people for 65 years and simply move it to another park, Heck they even have a area it would fit in. (Old Skylab, Old Flight Comander) I've been supportive and will be when paramount makes the right moves. But I will also say when I think it's the wrong move.

This wasn't in one of them surveys and I bet if it was. It would astoundingly be supported a keeper.

Chuck, who wonders why they put one in at PGA and now Carowinds and removes a popular ride from it's flagship?

Not only my above reply but it was also a ride Parents and Children could ride together. Unlike IJST which will have a height limit and excude the kids.

Chuck, who will see some of you at the farewell and I guess you'll just have to come to Strickers Grove next year for a snapfest (Not as good but it can be done)

Vortex, The ride was purchased for Coney Cincinnati in 1940. The tubs were replaces sometime in 1960's and the ride is one of only three left from Coney Cincinnati. KMLF, Carousel and Flyers. The monster left and was replaced a few years later by Al Webber (The ride he operated in 1972)

I won't be a bit surprised if Flying Skooters are a ride Coney Cincinnati Purchases next year :).

Three replies of my dissapointment. I think thats enough.

Chuck, who quotes Charles Jacques book. of the rides installation in 1940. A leisurly flight could be had by all but a bold rider discovered he could snap the cables intensifying the ride. The Cincinnati Enquire reported that "The Flying Scooters are proving to be a boon by onlookers and those who so desired could always catch the cool breeze the constantly produced"

This should have been the ride they named *TOP GUN* :)

I think nothing has changed in 65 years except for the fact they are now gone :( RIP! :(*** This post was edited by Charles Nungester 10/8/2004 11:23:43 PM ***

Here is a link to PKI's guest relations for those of you not able to make it to the park. http://www.pki.com/guestservice_service.jsp.
I have sent a comment expressing my disappointment to guest services through the above link. I'm not really expecting anything to happen but it couldn't hurt to do the same.

Please don't clip my wings.

I just hate to see all the rides from Coney Island leaving the park. Looks like Kings Island already took the Flyers off the web-site.*** This post was edited by Vortex 10/8/2004 11:46:46 PM ***
I got a sorry bout your luck reply to Comets reprofiling at Six Flags.

They will reply, Expecially Paramount. I might not get the reply I want but they will. Instead of some online poll, I do think it's best you tell them directly. Either by that link or PKI.com customer service or both.

You have got to be kidding me! I haven't ridden a lot of flyers, but PKI's are incredible. I had a blast on them at Beast Buzz this year. This is probably the worst move the park has ever made.
First off, may I remind you all that the "enthusiast" community, the one you represent and purport on these boards make up approximately 0.0001% or less of Kings Island's attendance. (That's not just an AbsolutelyReliable Quote, that's fact.) That being said, I honestly think that you're all taking this "fight" way too seriously.

True, many families and the like also enjoyed the ride, and most likely it will be missed. However, these people are the one's who come back not for just ONE RIDE, but the whole park experience, which is shows, food etc.

Some have mentioned this is "typical" behavior for a corporate owned park. What amazes me is that no one has mentioned that this "classic" ride will live on at another park. At least PKI didn't scrap the attraction all together. Sometimes you have to make these hard decisions, for the future of your park. Yes, some have been unwelcome (Whizzer removal, Americana closing) but continual updating is park of theme park culture...it needs to be done once in a great while. You're all honestly acting like a church was just bulldozed.(Yet no one raised a fuss about KBF's church removal for Silver Bullet)

Maybe it's just me, but it sure as hell seems like ALL the Paramount Parks get the most flak from this community, and frankly I'm sick of it. And this may make me look like a "fanboy" but honestly, I could care less. At least I know where to go to have a safe, clean time.

While others "would die" for Six Flags, they're still in $3.4 billion of debt. That says something.

Will I boycott PKI because they removed the Flyers? Uh, no. If the level in which some of you were fighting to keep this ride in the park was applied to say, the "homelessness" issue in America, problems in our schools and communities...damn the Ohio area (And the world) would be better off. Discuss.

I just don't understand why Carowinds couldn't get a Larson Scooter instead. Why do I not get this?
65 years of thrills and fun isn't a mistake. There is nothing wrong with maintaining a little history while also updateing. The rides being relocated so theres nothing major wrong with it.

You talk of giving flak? Well lets see, I've vollenteered at every oportunity to help them both promotionally and publicly any chance I can. I've praised the right moves and even defended the wrong moves in some cases (SOB) of which I still think isn't as bad as many claim. I would do so again and am presently doing so for IJST so I see nothing wrong with mentioning a BAD MOVE just like I did when it was announced that Kings Mills Log Flume was going bye bye. Funny, I must not have been the only one who thought it was a bad move and they heard about it. Decided they could rehab and retheme it into a viable part of the parks future and WAHLA, We still have it to be enjoyed by millions.

I also talked directly with Jeff Seibert about my displeasure and how many were upset with me on my not as nice as this displeasure of the removal of KMLF and his reply to me was, If it was sincere theres nothing wrong with it. Thats my Job to listen to complaints and try to make it right.

While he's no longer head of GR but head of marketing. I would hope that the new head takes it as a honestly felt wrong move. Thats all, Nothing more other than if possible. SAVE IT :)

BTW, who says I don't help homless and hungry?

Chuck

I dont understand how some people can base their park experience on a single attraction. Not much did I hear someone mention that, "well atleast we are getting a pretty cool coaster". If you had to chose coaster or eagles im sure the coaster would be there. Now im not being bias because carowinds is my home park but last yearwhen the sternwheeler was taken out it was a little shock to us but hey at the end of the day we realized that it wasnt much we can do about it but make the best out of our park experience. Someone asked why carowinds couldnt just get a new one? That, you and I would probably never know because its goes deeper than the parks. Look what happen to PGA carowinds snatched ;) their flyer, they got pissed, BB open up, you dont even here a trace about a flyer that was ever in the park.
Well the Ride has been in Coeny Island and Kings Island for 70 years. Its one of those rides that everyone grows up with in this area. I don't know of to many rides that have been around that long. Coaster come and go like the King Cobra. Do I think this new coaster will be fun sure. Do I think they should remove the oldest ride in the park no.*** This post was edited by Vortex 10/9/2004 4:25:24 PM ***
When I was a kid, Kings Dominion lost their flyers at least twice and they kept coming back. Maybe they (or some new ones) will come back to PKI eventually.
I thiink I'll write the Cincinnati Enquirer and Post too.

Can't hurt? Remember Save the Whizzer?

Well quite honestly I think its a good move, I mean not just because Pcar is my home park but.......well just because its my home park! :)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Whos starting Save The Flyers campaign??
