PKD changes confirmed at Eastcoaster.

Thanks to Jeff M. at URC for keeping his ears peeled, we now have the following things confirmed for PKD in 2003:

- Drop Zone will NOT rotate, in order to increase capacity and reliability.

- Diamond Falls has been removed. (This shocks me!)

- The Scrmabler is being re-located to the Congo area.

Any opening date hinted at for Drop Zone?

Can't wait to visit in June.

Diamond falls has been removed! Why.
Diamond Falls has been removed for future development. What future development? Mark wouldn't say when asked that question.

Mark said Drop Zone testing should start in about 3 weeks so I think it's safe to say it should be open for opening day.

That's disapointing news about Drop Zone. Oh well...

I'm wondering why Diamond Falls was removed. It was an above-average splashdown ride IMO.

And I pretty much knew that Scrambler would have to be relocated to Congo. It's the one area of the park lacking a flat ride, and the one area of the park left that one could fit in well for that matter.

Diamond falls is being removed for futre development on it's site? hmm, that leaves quite a few interesting possibilities for a new ride in 04 but definitely not enough land for a hyper. :-(

Now a floorless might fit in that general area,we'll just have to wait until then to see what happens,& it looks as if shockwave will still remain there for the 04 season as well.

It's too bad about DZ not rotating,I still think it's a waste to add a gyro drop if the one feature which sets it apart from a normal giant drop isn't going to be used & that just makes me a bit less interested in riding it now.

Does this mean PKI's Congo Falls could be removed in the near future? It's probably the only ride at the park right now that doesn't fit in with that area's theme. Moving it to Rivertown would be a great option IMO, but I would really like to see a new major water ride at the park.

Thanks for the update Shaggy!

Did PKI anounce anything we can release Shaggy? I hope Congo isn't relocated, there's not a whole lot that oculd go there IMO.
That stinks. How would rotating Drop Zone decline in capacity? Does it take longer to reach the top if it spins? That really sucks, oh well.

As for Diamond Falls being removed, doesn't surprise me, it was never opened during the season. Maybe a Floorless or Impulse. If they did good design, they could remove it for a station to a Hyper?! =D Lift Hill could be above the water park. Oh well, wishful thinking, but I think PKD will get a Coaster for the 2004 season.

Can't wait till March 22nd for Drop Zone!

Not even a hyper coaster station or a Huss Jump 2 Joe?? ;)

I think PKI also announced something about a new food management team coming in this year, so our Shrimp Shack, Subway, and Chinese food rumors may not be so far off.

-Danny

As a side question, does PKD generally have everything open (minus the waterpark) right at the beginning of the season? I think we're planning on going one of the first couple weekends they're open and wanted to make sure. Thanks!

-Danny

I guess your right Danny, but KI seems to want to keep Timberwolf alone (look at how bad it looks) and I doubt they'd want to have it running during concerts. That being a hyper coaster. I think that a Jump 2 would fit in there, but I don't want to see a new ride in AZ next year leave it alone for a couple years and let the crowds drain out. I am almost sure we are getting a Shrimp Shack and it's not Bubba Gump, but it's close. Subway is very possible and would be a good choice especially with ALl-Star Cafe getting rid of sandwhiches. Chinese food would be pretty popular at the parkt oo, but I just don't agree with spending that much for food.
I also am wondering how having Drop Zone not rotate would decrease capacity. To me that just doesn't make sense. Could someone please explain?

They say music can alter moods and talk to you, but does it load a gun up for you and cock it too?

It's not a capacity reason. It's because it puts strain on the motor. Also, if I'm thinking right the rotating mechanism is on the car itself, which if you take a motor off that's probably 2000 pounds which means you can add some more people.
Yeah there has been a food service managment change, but its not anything the GP would care about. The corporate chef from Paramount is now the head food manager at PKI. That doesn't really affect anything besides how he wants to run that part of the business.

Actually, Mark said that it would seat about 10 more people because it doesn't rotate.

As far as i know, and from past experiences, all coasters are open on opening day, as well as most of the flats. The only exclusions would be water rides such as log flume(and now DF since its not there anymore), as well as the water park.

And, IMO, opening weeked is one of the best times to catch volcano as it warms up for the season. I remember last season it sort of "stalled" exiting the top. Really gave the impression that it was gonna roll back, kinda freaky actually. Hope that helps.

As for drop zone, im not that dissapointed. A nice drop ride would go well at PKD, and it would be nice to get a really nice airtime machine there. the woodies are quite tame, and hypersonic's line is just too long...plus 8/10 times u get stapled.

I guess I'm somewhat surprised that Diamond Falls is being removed, yet at the same time I don't really care. I liked the double-down drop it had, but it was not a ride I'd race for from the gates, if you know what I mean. Hell, I honestly can't remember the last time I rode it.

The cave at the end was pretty spectacular, though...Universal's got nothing on that themeing.

Take a ride...

The space Diamond Falls sat on could probably fit a Huss Giant ride quite comfortably. If it's one thing that PKD is severely lacking in, it's flat rides for the grownups. I'm mildly disappointed by Drop Zone not rotating, but hey, it wouldn't have the same effect as when you get higher that Son of Beast now, would it?

I don't even remember the last time I rode Diamond Falls either. I don't think I even rode it last year. I'm really unmoved about it being removed.

I wouldn't be surprised if PKD added a Top Spin in the area, as long as the water was already there, then they could add the water effect to spray you during spins. I don't know how big of an area a Top Spin takes though.

I rather see a coaster next year. They shoulda used this year to add more flats, but they just added one. We do need more.
