Patriot Announcement...who's going?

Sure, Rambo II was crass commercialization of the Vietman War (among other films, many better) but nobody was still dodging bullets when it hit the matinee screens.

I'm quite sure WOF's made extenuating efforts to uh, make it as tasteful as possible...but it's no Iwo Jima. It's a coaster. People name these things after little annoying bugs and bad weather.

NOTE: Severe fecal impaction may render the above words highly debatable.

It's Patriot day not terrorist day. It will actually make people think about being Patriotic.

Maybe the park should just close on that day since having fun it out of the question and maybe the NFL should cancel it's opening weekend since we're supposed to be sad that day.

PS I plan on being there in the 10th and eating a ton of $1 hotdogs.

"It will actually make people think about being Patriotic."

I know car and mattress discounts on Memorial Day sure drive the meaning of the holiday home for me. Hotdog sales marketed based on 9/11 just does not seem right to me.

But if your Dad worked in the Twin Towers, your uncle came back without a leg or your brother was wading in the sand right now, you might think of it just a little differently. In terms of an ultimate sacrifice as opposed to whee! Goody! Slaughterhouse floor sweepings!

I don't think the Patriot's a bad name for a coaster. The paint job? Hey, it's paint! Specifically attaching it to Patriot Day--and by extension, an tragic event that happened four years ago--is really toeing the line. Will it sink the park? I don't think so! A good idea? I'm not so sure.

I just don't see the negative connection but I'm not in the one of the positions that CoastaPlaya mentioned.

What do you guys plan on doing for Sept 11th? Just curious. *** Edited 8/22/2005 6:43:59 PM UTC by jive2***

I don't think you have to be one of those people to be offended.

Let's use Pearl Harbor as an example. If a ride called the Patriot was announced as part of festivities on December 7, 2005, would anyone think anything of it? Well, what if that ride was announced on December 7, 1945? I think people would have a different view, whether or not they were actually at Pearl Harbor.

Generally-speaking the more directly affected by 9/11 a person is the more likely they are to take offense to the park announcing the coaster on that date.
My god things are blown way outta porportion around here.
If that's not an ironic choice of words...I don't know what is!

I don't see anyone getting too riled up here. What are you seeing that I'm not? Seems to me we're having a discussion on whether its of bad taste to announce a new coaster on the anniversary of 9/11. Some agree, others don't, but there's no flamming or heated exchanged here.

I, for one, think its good to discuss such topics.

I agree that the discussion has been good and it's definately a subject that desreves debate.
What on Earth is Patriot Day? Is this a new Federal holiday or something that I didn't get the memo on?

I'd be all for the day off of work.

It commemorates the 9/11 Twin Towers and Pentagon tragedies. And while the link between 9/11 and Desert Storm II varies depending on who you ask, the President who initiated this particular observance believes they're connected.

Of course, it's still a hot and controversial topic with mothers of war dead protesting the President's policies, Bush supporters storming back and so on and so forth.

Regardless of where you stand on the scale of opinion, it opens this Pandora's box of emotions I'd prefer to leave at the gate when I enter an amusement park. Isn't that why we go? Getting away from it all?

Agreed, Playa!
I don't necesarily think that this is in bad taste, i don't think they are trying to connect it to the tragic events of september 11 2001, but trying to do it in a more patriotic spirit i would guess. If I was park director I would probably do it on Labor day maybe but not this day.

PS- My cousin was in the wtc subway station at the time the plane hit the tower and made it out seconds before the whole station collapsed, so i REALLY don't want to hear about how i don't appreciate those who weren't so lucky on that tragic day.

Yes but what does Labor Day have to do with being Patriotic? ;)

Fourth of July or Veteran's Day would have been the most holidays to announce a coaster named Patriot, IMHO.
Oh but 4th of July celebrates our freedom which cost lives so can't do it that day either. If this is ditasteful so is are all the people that wear flags that day. Come on now just because its not the kind of memorial we are all used to, it is all a sudden distasteful. WOF is trying to do something to put a smile on people's faces that would normally be covered in tears that day. Not that they are trying to make light. If I can find a way to be there I will be there. and for the whole Patriots Day thing I didn't know there was such a Holiday I guess I learn something new everyday.
I don't know why you guys are so excited about being their that day. When WOF "announces" something they put up banners. Not exactly a "destination" event by any means. There might be a press event later on but don't expect anything over the PA or something to that effect.

I am not sure why people really are getting all bent out of shape over them making this a good weekend instead of making it a dry and negative weekend. I know some have lost loved ones and other person problems that are direct to 9/11. But I think WOF/CF thinks this is a good way to try and take a positive spin to a very tragic day. Maybe they want this new coaster to be a sign of WOF/CF being patriotic and support of the healing process to 9/11. I mean I do not see anybody making a big fuss, or saying it is distastefull for there to be a 9/11 memorial on the Los Vegas strip at New York New York. I feel that what they did on the strip was awsome, and maybe this is how they feel thay can contribute to the healing. I wish people reading into this would stop and people be positive instead of trying to make it a negative event.
