Park Enthusiasts or Snobs?

You guys are missing one of the most important points. By Premier branding their parks it is they themselves who are setting an expectation.

If the only park you have ever gone to was Six Flags Magic Mountain and you happened to be in Kentucky one day and pop into Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom you would be SHOCKED and it certainly would not have met your expectations.

The criticism of Disney's California Adventure is legit because they built that park a stone's throw from one of the most renowned parks on earth, charge the same price for admission, and it isn't half the park Disneyland is (literally and figuratively).

To add insult to injury at WoA, they ran a marketing campaign that had people saying they would drive past Cedar Point to go to WoA. Again, Six Flags sought out the comparisons, enthusiasts didn't.

I've been to the Emperor's New Amusement Park. It sucked. One train operation, little or no food stands open, everyone was smoking, and the clientele was ... well, less than desirable

Yeah, but Harem:The Ride more than made up for any other defeciencies.

Can a mod get a "point"? ;). At least Harem: The Ride explains all that smoking...

The Emperor's New Amusement Park has no clothes, er, um, rides!

Coasterbuzz is such a "fun" site. Where else can you go to pay money to have friends or pay money to download crappy games??

My question is do you believe some people like commenting on parks more than they like to visit them? If so don't you think this is snobby.

Snobby's not quite the right word. Sad, annoying, pathetic and a million other negative adjectives come to mind. But if you think that's bad, take a look at the quote above yours in my post. This guy does exactly what you're questioning - except about a website. You have to love the irony in that :)

Well I sure do.

Snobs who are snobs about snobs are the worst snobs of them all. Kinda like people who compain about people who complain. Stuff cracks me up every time. ;)

And Wild Turkey? Try the above-mentioned beverage and you might reconsider. That stuff tastes like burnt match water.

"However, such people are precisely the reason that I'm not terribly social in enthusiast circles."

I agree completely. The only club I still retain membership to is coasterbuzz. Why? Because coasterbuzz events are the only events I have attended where I was not treated rudely at one point or another for having not attended a certain park, or not knowing a certain fact. I also have never seen a coasterbuzz member act rudely to a park employee at any event, which is a major plus in my book.

I decided not to continue my ACE membership based on how I repeatedly saw ACE members at different times (Events or not) treat park employees with disrespect. I even saw angry arguments start over stpud coaster facts. I kid you not, I saw two people get really mad at each other over a 4 inch difference on M.F. hieght at cedar point.

In any case, I love riding coasters and knowing their history. But to call myself an enthusiast anymore just makes me ashamed of many of my fellows.

You guys are coaster/drinking pussies. ;)

Even though I just spotted this thread (I was spending so much time actually browsing the other threads looking for references to me. ;)), I have to concur with Playa. I like throwing copper like the next guy, but complaining about how others complain isn't going to make any revisionist statement.

Be happy. Ride a coaster this year. Or not. Drink merrily, even IF it's Wild Turkey. They don't ALL have to like it, even if I think they DO have bad taste, and can't appreciate a fine charcoal bourbon. ;)

I can be critical too I suppose, but really only of the things anyone else would complain about, like long lines for the rides running one train ops - now that's annoying.

Other than that, I'm always enjoying the park.

Soggy's avatar
nasai, I'LL throw back shots of Wild Turkey with you anytime, just name the time & place.

As for the snob issue... The ones that bug me are when they take a rather small observation (a trash can overflowing with garbage, or water on the floor of a restroom) and claim that it RUINED their day. I mean, come on, did ONE overflowing trash can REALLY have the negative power to make your entire day suck? Somehow I doubt it. Sure, I'd rather not see things like that, but if there is a full trash can in the queue for a coaster, it won't make the coaster itself any worse, will it?

If you are looking for a bad time, you'll eventually find it. If you are looking for a good time, you'll also eventually find it.

Pass da' sizzrup, bro!

If you go to a park with your friends then you should always have a good time. If not, you need new friends.

I've met a hundreds of enthusiasts in my many years of coastering and very few have been people I wouldn't enjoy hanging out with on a regular basis. Heck, some of them have ended up being great friends.

I've found that most people are just regular folk who are just as happy to talk about coasters as they are talking about movies, music, politics, or anything else. I mean come on...there were 30-40 enthusiasts around a campfire at SRM, most of whom had never met in person. We all got along just fine.

So...who are the real snobs here? Seems to me its the people who point their fingers and say, "I don't hang out with those kind of people."

With all due resepct that sounds like elitest BS to me.

Wild Turkey is particularly good in a Manhattan---mixed 3:1 with a passable sweet vermouth and a smidge of bitters---though my mixing bourbon of choice is Maker's Mark.

Mmmm. Manhattans. Is it cocktail hour yet?

Brian - it's 12:42 here in LA...it's been cocktail hour for over 90 mins now ;)

All I can say is: "I alone love you, I alone tempt you, I alone love you, fear is not end of this.........

Sorry Rob, couldn't help myself. The off-season does that to me. I was just listening to Live's Throwing Copper and read your post. Heh.

Josh, I agree. Sometimes it's just good to hang out, play some DDR and chill, maybe get a few rides here and there. Whether you go on a coaster frenzy or spend the whole day with pals on the Whack-A -Mole we are all there to have fun.

Moosh, everybody just thinks your irresitable to argue with, that's it. Rob is too when he's not trying to start fights or stagnate the park with Wild Turkey, or get Peabody killed on the Louisville streets. ;-)

I'm not a snob. I just hate coasters and parks. And I'm better than you because of it.

You said exactly what I was thinking Darth Vater ;) It appears to me that people are being just as snobby as those they despise. "I dont associate with enthusiasts" Gimme a break. Why the hell are we all here on Coasterbuzz then? To see what the newest popup add will be?

Nice choice of bourbon. Give me Maker's and Coke any ole day.

I had the most unusual drink while in Manhattan over the Christmas holiday: a cucumber martini!

Yeah, I know...it sounds awful but it was really good! The bartender mashed up the cucumber and put it in the tumbler with the ice and vodka [or was it gin?] and strained it so there were no cucumber chunks. I'm not sure what else he added but it was sweet, cool, and, well...as refreshing as a cucumber!

I expected to hate it but loved it!

Interesting that this thread has "kind of" been hijacked. Drinks, and wacking moles. ;)

For the record, I have never had Makers' so I wouldn't know. I don't really drink, per se, but on occasion, I do prefer the smokier bourbons. I should give Makers a shot. I also have never had a Manhattan, but the idea of a cucumber in a drink is a little off for me. It must have been something special to be enjoyable, Matthew.

For SRM, yes, 30+ people all really enjoying ourselves, with the exception of Brent, as he probably doesn't recall anything. Thankfully, Corey shot video that will live in infamy. :) I do look forward to the day when I can meet up with many of the SRM crowd again. I enjoyed the heck out of that night. It certainly kept me away from ERT on Zinga!
