Other things to do in Sandusky...

I swear I thought I saw another thread about this a while ago, but couldn't seem to find it.

Anyways, my family is planning a week long trip to Cedar Point in August with some relatives. But my Mom and Aunt would rather do other things than go in the park. Problem is there's not much else to do in Sandusky! The town is practically built around the park .

Anyone know anything else to do in Sandusky? Are there any flea markets or shopping places around there, and how far away are they? Thanks.

Well, there is the Sandusky Mall about 4 or 5 minutes from Cedar Point, pretty good size mall and nice stores. They should try the Jet Express that takes you to Kelleys Island. The jet leaves either from Cedar Point or from Port Clinton. Kelleys Island is a nice little town, with some shops, restaurants, etc. They should rent a go-kart and drive around town. Very nice!

There is actually quite a bit to do in the area. Check out this website:

www.sanduskyohiocedarpoint.com

It lists a lot of varied attractions in detail and offers discount coupons. A bonus is a pretty cool picture of Cedar Point on the home page. :)

The Sandusky Mall is pretty small. There aren't very many stores in it at all. Your best bet is the Islands or Cleveland for other attractions and entertainment.

If you haven't booked your place yet, you might consider getting a cottage on the lake/bay in marblehead or thereabouts. Your Mom and Aunt can have a vacation on the water while the rowdy members of the family are off gallivanting.

It's farther afield, but the Toledo Museum of Art is supposed to be decent. Not the Louvre (or the Orsay, or the Smithsonian National Galleries, or ...) but decent.

They might also be interested in the goings-on at Lakeside. A colleague of mine (who happens to have MiA season passes) stays there for a week or two every summer with his family, and loves it.

Additionally, near Amherst on OH-113, ther's Jamie's Flea Market. It's one of the largest in ohio, so they claim.

We're already booked at the Sandcastle Suites... so it's kind of far away from everything. Sounds interesting though... they love flea markets though - so that's the main thing we're looking for.

Get a Reeses Pieces Sundae at Friendlys on Route 250!!!

Thats right, we got the speed ya need, the rock and roll for your soul, we're gonna pick ya up, spin ya round, drop ya down, one more time, here we go! One more blast of the super-fast for your @ss!

1.) The Sandusky Mall is pretty crappy.

2.) Sports City is a cool little place w/ batting cages, go- carts, arcade, mini-golf, etc. Also, is Goofy Golf. Both are located on rt. 250/ Milan Rd.

3.) If you were to go to Kelly's, you'd pry rent golf carts, not go-carts. Another island is South Bass (Put-in-Bay). The Miller Ferry is cheap, and leaves every 1/2 hour. They have golf carts, the longest bar in the world (Beer Barrel Saloon) and great hotels. The Grand Islander is great, and quite reasonably priced.

That's about all I got, hope it helps.

Tell them to take the Island Rocket ferry boat, from the downtown Sandusky dock, to Put-In-Bay. They will have a great time.

------------------
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

The only problem with the Rocket is how much it costs. I agree, it is very fun, but the price is a killer.

No offence theyd be better off driving into Cleveland or Toledo than hang around Sandusky, or Go to Put In Bay or Kelly Island, Kellys Island is more summer homes with a few things to see, Put In Bay is more touristy with a lot of those shops moms like but kids and husbands hate, along with bars. As far as Sandusky everything is tourist trap junk or local hick crap, As far as shoping goes I think all they sell in Sandusky are pickup truck lift kits and KC lights and stuff like that, but it you go east or west you'll find more civilized things as you enter Cleveland's western suburbs. But I'd recomend Put In Bay, I know the Miller Ferry is about half the price of the JEt express but the Express takes you right into the downtown area, but like thatd matter if they were to see the whole Island theyd need to rent a bike or golf cart,
Hey, you forgot about the new huge Harley installment on 250! That's not too hickish.:)

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I lived in Sandusky for four years, and loved it there. But that Harley-Davidson outlet is sorta giving us a bad rap.

My bad I forgot about the Harley, I guess that'd be more yuppie-ish, but I'm not into motorcycles unless their vintage I don't have to over compensate by buying something huge to put between my legs, it comes natural. Lets just put it this way I use to work with this redkneck from Sandusky in Solon near SFWOA, talk about brain dead, then last year me and my girlfriend stayed out there we went to Put In Bay one day then CP the next and we were at the Wendy's on 250 and I swear every vehicle in the parking lot was a jacked up truck with a four wheeler in the back, also I was snowboarding in NY a few years ago and this chick was trying to bum a smoke off me and I'm like I bet you drive a pickup truck, shes like yeah, then I said you got Dale RIP stickers in the window along with Dale JR and she said yeah, then she's like where ya from so I told here she's like oh I live about and hour or so west of their in Sandusky, now no offense some parts of that area are nice but for the most part the locals are wierd, its like a farm ghetto of sorts. I'll be honest with you, you get that everywhere its a typical tourist trap area, like down in myrtle beach, locals are wierd and trash.

The Merry-Go-Round Museum is excellent. It's right in downtown Sandusky in the old post office (which, interestingly enough, is a round building). Among their permanent collection is a working carousel that you get to ride at the end of the tour. It has a band organ and is run at the right speed (that is, a lot faster than parks ever run their carousels anymore). There's also a new exhibition every year, but I don't know what it is at the moment; unfortunately their web site is still advertising their 2000 exhibition (!). There's also a really neat gift shop in which every single item for sale is related to carousels, making it the most focused gift shop I've ever seen.

Why do you have Cleveland after Willoughby? Maybe because you live in a "hick town". Aren't you proud of you town?

Every town has a little white trash. But, really, it's not like Sandusky is Toledo.

I lived in Huron for 29 years. It is a very nice lake community just to the east of Sandusky - the kind of place where you'd want to raise a family. That either makes me an expert on the area's demographic, slightly biased, or both. Trust me, your perception is very skewed. Is Sandusky and Huron surrounded by a little hillbilly? Yep. But so is Cleveland ;)
