My own theme park

I was thinking somewhere in the West Village. I have friends who go to NYU. It would be awsome if it was near there!

Antuan, perhaps I worded that badly.

They may be worth that much money, but how much of that is liquid? How much of it is subject to capital gains tax? income tax? How much of it is tied up in estates, cars, etc?

I'm sure each of them could open something on the scale of a HW or Knoebel's. But a mega-park with 10+ coasters? Nah. And even more important, would it be a wise investment if they did? I doubt that, as individuals, they could ride out the time it would take to get all that money back.

You're on the right track, Mark. Even if you did have $100 mill to build a mega park, you would need lots and lots more to run it while you were trying to make back your initial investment. I was recently talking to a guy that runs a Krispy Kreme franchise, and the amount to actually build a franchise was a hefty sum, but you are also required by the company to have more than 2 and a half times that sum (can't remember the exact figures) in the bank.

For 29.99 you too can have your own park! I own my own park! It is called Roller Coaster Tycoon 2! Budget a bit strapped? You can get Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 at WalMart for 9.99! All the challenges of owning an amusement park and none of the risk!

I second that, Kick The Sky. I'm sorry I ever doubted your coolness.

I regret to inform you that Lakemont Park is my homepark.

Derrick, here's my suggestion, considering I have been thinking about my own park for a little while now:

Start out in the field, per se, a designer, or even a ride op (or for that matter, both!) Keep thinking and keep dreaming. If you wanna have a park by thirty-five, look for some available land when you're thirty. Don't buy too much @ once, because that will put you in the pooper. Start it out as an entertainment center: You know, some Go-Karts, batting cages, mini-golf, food, and some flat rides. Then, add some more thrilling rides, like a Skycoaster or a Freefall. Then, once your business gets off the ground, put in a coaster. That should get it even farther off the ground, which will enable you to add even more coasters. But I say DO NOT start out with a coaster, let alone the ones that you said. And to be honest, where in NYC can you REALLY build a GOOD amusement park? I'm thinkin' maybe cross the GW into NJ, and start something there.

Derrick, as a 14 year-old I have to tell you to get real. Do you really think your that special? It sounds like you think its easy to get rich and famous. If its that easy why didn't anybody think of that? And the odds of you breaking into the music industry aren't very good.

A friend of mine that is a senior in high school is the drummer in a band called Mayfield. They have a record deal and they went on a tour all the way from Illinois to Florida. They aren't rich and they are working harder than anyone I know and I also feel sorry for them that their dream is so hard for them. But i also respect them for working hard to get to their dream.

You better be prepared for a lot of hard work and don't think one day your gonna decide to go out and get a record deal.

Guys maybe we should all lay off on him. This is something he wants to do within the next 20 years. Cut him some slack and give him positive suggestions.

Geeze

Too Tired, your moniker adequately describes you. If you ain't got nothing good to say, move right along. Dag!

The name of my band was TUKKER. We were very popular here in the central PA area, however we never seemed to get gigs anywhere else. We DID play in York, PA once at some little Hotel/Bar.

The name does ring a bell. Did you ever play in or near Philly other than York? I don't think I have seen you but the name does sound familiar. I lived in and around Philly from '91-'97. I still talk to a few friends who are from central PA (Shippensburg/Harrisburg area)that I have known since college. If I catch one of them online later I will ask them if they remember the band.

It's funny that you mention Camden Park. I grew up in Huntington WV and Camden was my homepark. I would even go as far as to say it is where I discovered this obsession with amusement parks in the first place.

Same here, I grew up and now live in Charleston, so some of my early "coastering" was done at Camden.

On topic, I had a "childhood fantasy" about turning this little park into a giant theme park. I even mapped it out over top of a Camden Park map I got from the office.

I still have that fantasy!!!! :-) Well, I live out those fantasies on RCT now.

And YES, I am old. I'll be a WHOPPING 29 next month.

Oh will you stop it! :-) You, or should I say, WE (I will be 31 next month) are NOT old, just older. lol.

I'm not too old to rock.

You said it, babe!

I am planning on starting another band after I move to State College this Jan. but it will only be a hobbie and not as serious as my last project.

Cool! I used to play quite a bit but kind of got out of it (since I sold my equipment.....BIG MISTAKE!) I am really rusty but want to get back into playing soon, mostly guitar and keyboards.

I am just saying he needs to be prepared for a lot of hard work and from what he has posted he doesn't seem like he is currently persueing any of this. He is just sitting in front of a computer daydreaming. He is not out trying to build up a fan base or getting a record deal.

Here's my advice which is pretty much the same as everybody else's:

Go to school, get all educated and crap.
Make a very detailed floorplan of your amusement park while working at amusement parks for management skills and the such.
Have a scale model built of your park.
Rent a building for an evening to hold a nice event and invite many local potential investors to come see your idea. At the event you must talk to the investors, tell them why you would be worth putting some money into, etc...
Once you get enough investors get quotes from all the companies from which you will be buying stuff.
Get a final layout and build your dream.
By this time you will probably be 40 or 50.
Good luck.

First go to school, then get educated, then crap. In that order. No crapping before you go to school.

Good luck Derrick. I'm also hoping to own an amusement park someday. You will definitely need a lot of education to own one. One thing you could do is study all the amusement parks, their designs, and the way they operate (I would suggest studying how Cedar Point operates and not how most SF parks operate). I've never been to New York City so I wouldn't know where a good place for a new amusement park would be. I would suggest building it with a bit of a distance from the city like SFMM is with LA. This way you'll have room for expansion in the future. Another thing you could do is maybe try to create some other business or plan to make enough money to start the park out.

One thing I would love to do one day is to buy Coney Island and rebuild it into the enourmous amusement area and the "rollercoaster nuclear test grounds" that it used to be nearly a century ago. Only problem is that I looked at it through one of those satellite views online and it looks like most of the land is already taken up with buildings and other things.
Well, good luck with your goals and i hope I helped.

New York is NOT a good place for a park. There is nowhere top expand. And uptate seems a little, well, um, dead and there isn't much tourism (except Cooperstown). Wait a minute; Cooperstown! Build a park in Cooperstown and devote it to baseball! You could have a freefall ride called The Bat, a launch coaster called The Picth, A monorail called The Fans, and another launch coaster called The Hit!

Or, maybe not.

How would u know what I'm doing? Are u in my house watching me or something. This is what I want to do with my life. I suggest u do something with your instead of worrying about mine. God u sound like a little *****. Go on with your life and stay out of mine. I know how much work it will be. I'm not stupid.

Ok Derrick calm down. You gotta expect people to respond like they have when you announce such a grand plan for you life

Besides my earlier advice let me add this. When you are old enough get yourself a job at a local park or family entertainment center. That will give you some invaluable experience for your long range goals.

Have you been to all five boroughs of New York?? I agree Manhattan is a tad cramped, but the Bronx has hella room near Co-op City / Throggs Neck / Eastchester / Riverdale....just to name a few neighborhoods. Staten Island also has alot of room (albeit a traffic nightmare)

I still say I think he can do it. A lot can happen in 20 years.
