Michigan's Adventure serving Beer

Timber-Rider's avatar

So, people who die in car accidents from drunk drivers every year is just a story? I am only telling my experience with dealing with drunks. The fact is that a park full of people drinking beer and then driving on Michigan roads, after drinking that beer, has the potential to lead to an accident, reguardless of what I am telling you from my experience. And, I don't think it's a good idea to serve beer in an isolated park. If there is an accident, the nearest hospital, and probably the only hospital is in Muskegon, and they just route people to Grand Rapids, which is an hour away. Also ambulance service is going to be long distance as well. There is nothing near Michigan's Adventure. Or do we forget the Choas accident, where it took rescue people, and ambulance service a long time to aid in that accident, which had to be called in from other cities. Not local. I just see a disaster waiting to happen.

I didn't do it! I swear!!

I can't say what happens in Michigan or China. But here in Ohio people who serve alcohol are under scrutiny by the state liquor control agency. My dance group, as a fund raiser, would work our arenas here in Columbus where we served draught beer. Lots of it. We were not bar tenders, but beer pourers, just like they have at Cedar Point. And before we set foot we were required to 1) be of age ourselves, and 2) attend and pass extensive training (conducted by the state) that taught us how to check ID, serve responsibly, identify the over-intoxicated, and cut them off when appropriate. It's not as haphazard a business as you suggest. Infractions cause licenses to be suspended and nobody wants that.

I can't believe you insist bars aren't busy during the day. One with lunch and done is your experience? Ok. So, won't that be the case at amusement parks as well? Or will the parks be full of drunks passed put at the bar because Cedar Fair is money-grubby and they only hire idiot kids?

You've observed intoxicated people and we've all seen and stood next to the same folks as well. But because they're out there doesn't mean you can step on the rights of those whose intention is to have a cold one under legal limits or those that want to increase their profits and business by offering alcohol to customers.

I'm fascinated by how Timber-Rider is so harsh in his judgement of others who choose to drink. Yet, when he's in a position to take an active role, he doesn't.

He sees extremely drunk people at Cedar Point, but doesn't tell anyone because there were never CP Police around and apparently no other park employees that could be asked to call in the Police. He worked as a bartender where the owners allowed a 13-year old to mix drinks, but never alerted the authorities.

Also fascinated by his fixation on amusement parks. Parks + beer = BAD. Festivals, bars in resort towns, beaches, casinos, dive bars, restaurants + beer = cool, keep drinking.

Apparently the only alcolhol-related accidents in Michigan happen around Michigan's Adventure.

Yes, it's a completely irrelevant story. People do stupid things, and bad things happen. This isn't a reason to just prevent everyone from doing anything, nor is it a reason to disallow responsible people from doing whatever they choose.

Here's your anti-anecdote: I had a drink in every country at Epcot, walked back to the hotel, had another drink, and nothing happened. So clearly, everyone should be required to have one drink in every country before leaving Epcot. That's the logic you're using.

I really think some of you underestimate Timber-Rider's power. I don't believe I've ever known anyone with the limitless ability to produce text walls of inane anecdotes which offer some alternate form of logic that no person has encountered on this planet.

Pass some of them brownies over here.

I don't know that I'd necessarily try a drug that let me see the world as T-R sees it for a day, but my curiosity would definitely be piqued.

Just a comment Slithernoggin. I did do something about the 13 year old serving drinks. I told her mother, who owns the restaurant that it is not legal for anyone under age to serve alcohol, and that if a undercover detective were to come into her establishment and see her daughter mixing drinks, she could lose her liquor liscense, and face possible closure by the state. She no longer had her daughter mix drinks after that, and started having me do the bartending, or another waiter. But, that restaurant had many violations, which I won't go into. Anyways I quit working there not long after that. She was a very crooked woman. And RCMAC, I never said bars did not have business during the day, I repeatedly said it's busier after 10 p.m. Most bars will have a decent happy hour, between say 4 and 7, where they might get 20 or 30 people. Then after 10:00, the bar gets packed. I have been in many bars, and they are pretty much dead until 9 or 10, compared to the masses that are there at midinight. A bar that I frequent might have 10 to 20 people during the day, and 500 to 600 at night. But we are still talking about an amusement park here, not a bar. The amount of people coming and going will not be the same, and drinking will go on as long as it is available, or whatever hours whatever beer area they create is open. Saturdays are bad enough, can only imagine what that would be like. Drunks in a water park...yeah that sounds fun. NOT!

I don't always drink beer at Michigan's Adventure,

But when I do, I'm sh*tfaced by mid-Timbers.

Stay thirsty Timber-Rider.

I'm not worried about being thirsty. I drink pop. I rarely drink beer. I think I have had 3 bottles of beer in several years. Once on a 4th of July to try a bud lime, which had no lime taste at all, and last halloween I had two imported strawberry beers, which were not bad at a halloween party. Otherwise I don't drink it. I am not a big drinker.

Maybe I should have put a word copywrite on Mid timbers. You guys owe me money! LOL!!

I didn't do it! I swear!!

I heard somewhere that burritos are much more dangerous than beer at amusement parks.

Every time I read one of your posts, I feel like you owe me a beer.

A beer AND a brownie.

If you eat the brownies before reading the posts, they make sense.

Which kind of proves my point. You say that amusement parks selling beer is a Very Bad Thing, since it will inevitably lead to people dying; but when you actually have the chance to do something, the best you can muster is telling the person who had the 13-year old mixing drinks in the first place.

As the saying goes, you talk the talk, but you don't walk the walk.

I have mentioned this on another site, and there is a mixed reaction. From pro beer..(like most people on this board) To people like me, who see it as a bad idea. But, i won't comment on it further, because nobody seems to care.
