Magnum breaks lift chain

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Magnum broke its chain this morning. As of this evening, the ride is still down and it's not clear how long it will take to get a replacement chain in place.

3 MF rides:
3-2, 5-1, 9-2
It was going to happen. The ride is 11 years old. THey should replace the chain every year if they could. But i guess not!!!!
Get over it.

It happens to a lot of coasters.

Time 2 tear it down..... not. The Magnum is an awsome coaster. The chain felt smooth when I rode it in July.

Did you reach down and touch it?

Coasters do in fact break chains all the time...this is Maggies third..I think.

Chang (a B/M product) at SF Kentucky Kindom broke its chain the first day.
It went: !CHHhhhh----AAANNNGG!

(SERIOUSLY)
The chains are periodically replaced. They recieve a tremendous amount of wear and tear during the course of a season. Remember the old saying "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link"? Watch what happens when a train hooks up.Watch the chain jump. The old PTC three bench cars weigh in around two tons. A three car train ( six tons) plus the weight of the riders equals a lot of stress, not only on the chain but on the spockets and the motor and gearbox as well.
Some coasters have their "old" days... ha ha

It happened to a new coaster (Superman at SFA) twice in its first couple of weeks... the first time while I was on it!

I don't know how often parks replace chains, but I think Cedar Point generally replaces theirs at least every two or three seasons, necessary or not. Given the length of Magnum's chain, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. It's been several years since it happened last... perhaps someone can remember which year?

I just got back from CP. They were putting a new chain on it at around 6:00. Looked like they must have a spare on hand. Seemed to be going fairly quickly. I would imagine it will be open tommorow.

P.S. On my 11th ride on MF I finally bribed someone $10 for the front seat.. worth EVERY penny!!! *** This post was edited by Jeff Schultz on 8/8/2000. ***
Sweet im going there tommorow!! I have a pass
uhh, the chain is really long and was bound to be broken one of these days. they will fix it though
I was going to go today but didn't because of Magnum. I am going tomorrow.
I hate Arrow Dynamic lift hills. The sound terrible.

Had this been SFO, it would be down for the season.

Examples-
Putting tape on Villain lap bars-1½ weeks
Replacing pads on Serial Thriller-2 weeks
Big Dipper fire-who knows

Good thing it didn't happen while I was there
Yeah Szymo, I hate Arrow lifts also. They just sound unstable or something. Well I hope the chain is ready by August 23 when I go!! :)
