Moosh and gator are the same person!? That explains a lot, but raises so many more questions.

Not Gator, Crazy Horse, I was reading Gator's comment about Kobe Bryant when I typed that in the Lebron thread.

Except you didn't post it in the Lebron thread...you posted it in the CP2011 thread (this one).

I typed gators name here instead of crazy horse's name because I clicked over here to respond to this thread as I was reading gator's response in the Lebron thread.

Hey, I'm frazzled here, I just approved and denied about 7 medicaid cases today and I'm spent!

Aw come on, kids. This wouldn't happen if we weren't linking to the Day in Pictures forum in the first place. People will find the pictures, really. :)

Oh, and "darling"...

Those facebook comments sure seem like an accurate representation of the GP.

I really, really can't stand that generalization.

Well if you feel that way, why don't you tell us why? Otherwise, I stand by my comment, as well as the fact the someone on FB stated that a worker told them TTD was getting removed next season.

To be honest, I'm surprised there aren't comments of the "I heard someone died on ride X" variety.

Well, I can't speak for him, but I can honestly say I get frustrated by the generalization because we are all general public. We are not some special population separate from all of the other guests. We have more information that some because of our larger-than-average interest. That's all. But when we cross through the turnstile we are general public.

And beyond that, there are a few people who will believe everything and repeat anything. But they exist in all facets of life. Suggesting that everyone who visits amusement parks who aren't enthusiasts think that way is just silly to me.

Exactly what Carrie said. I've said it on here a thousand times. "GP" as a demeaning term is just silly to me. Between the time I seriously got into roller coasters and now, I have grown up a lot. Part of that growing up, to me, was leaving those "distinctions" behind. I realized that I enjoy going places with "non-fans", and spending time like I used to before it became what it did.

It's part of why I rarely refer to myself as an "enthusiast", so much as someone who enjoys a couple of extra visits to amusement parks. Sure, I know how everything works, and what things are called. I like to play roller coaster games, and know more things than your average person, but it's just something I enjoy. I refuse to let something like that define who I am entirely.

I'm in it for the friends and good times, not so much for the rides and perks, like I used to be. I feel that deserves a title change. :) I like to think of myself as most parks' "target audience". I love the experience, and I like to spend my money when I'm there. I'm a sucker for a good gimmick, character, concert, or festival. Plain and simple, I just like to have fun, and that's exactly all the "GP" is there to do.

I'm ok with "GP" being used. Especially in this sense.

I think the point was that the comments are more representative of what you'd hear from the average Joe than what you'd read on an enthusiast forum.

I like it because I think much of the time, the people posting on these forums are 'too close' to the subject matter and have a skewed view that isn't representative of any kind of greater general consensus outside of those with a higher interest in parks and/or coasters.

The "GP" perspective interests me WAY more than anything that will be discussed among practicing enthusiasts.

With that said, that's one of the little things that keeps me loving it around here - for the most part you'll get resonable perspective...and when you don't, someone will call it out.

My intent was not to use "GP" as a demeaning term or as a way of making enthusiasts seem "elite". Rather, I meant it in terms of classifying people who don't pay much attention to amusement parks except when they visit or when there is an announcement like this. These folks simply have less info because they don't follow things on a daily basis.

In a way, I think they certainly can be self-demeaning, depending on if they interpret things they hear in an irrational manner. This seems common on facebook, where I would think the majority of CP's "fans" are of a younger age group. Believing wild rumors and propagating them as true is silly and illogical...unless you have friends that might be impressed by the news.

But no, we can all be considered "GP". Even if I call the new ride a Funtime Starflyer and someone else calls it "the big swingy thing".

Raven-Phile's avatar

I gotcha. My opinion of that term, when used as a separation between coaster fans and not, still stands, however.

Carrie M.'s avatar

Maybe I'm just sensitive because I'm more likely to call it "the big swingy thing." :)

I also stand behind my thoughts regarding using it to separate or classify groups of park goers, though I respect that wasn't what you were trying to do here.

I'll just also want to caution anyone from using FB comments which we agree are likely coming from a younger crowd as a basis of characterizing the average Joe park goer. I'm not sure they're really representative. Maybe they are, but I take any comments offered on the internet with a grain of salt. Feel free to take mine that way, as well. :)
