Kings Dominion's 2010 Coaster

Bogey, I just don't understand your logic comparing a woodie and non-existent coasters to the new one at KD. I agree Steel Phantom, Manhattan Express, Son of Beast, and Moonsault Scramble did not deliver, but none are Intamins. Using your logic I also think you should include Mean Streak, for obvious reasons.

^ I agree that a launched coaster should be called an accelerator like F1. However, we don't know F1's stats, other than the rumor of 150 MPH. What if F1 is under 200 feet, while KD's coaster is an accelerator that is over 300 feet tall while under 150 MPH like F1? Do you call it a giga accelerator or pick the key component of the ride (speed vs height). We will all find out in August.

With that said, I wouldn't complain if KD uses the same lift technology as Maverick - that would rock imho.

I was thinking that no 200+ foot with inversions ever was considered a good idea, but just realized I forgot the Busch dive machines, so I retract my previous assertion.

Most of CPs Intamins are OTSR free (thank god).

By "most" do you mean "half"? (Maverick, WT vs. MF, TTD)

Or were you counting Jr. Gemini and Thunder Canyon?

Yeah, but those non-OTSR Intamin's at CP are from a different time...go ahead and continue to think this will be 300+ ft, but coaster manufacturers do play fast and loose with their verbiage.

^^ Honestly, when I said "most" I was reffering to or thinking "most" of their entire line-up of coasters, not just Intamin. Maverick's trains are good, but I just prefer lap bars.

^ While you can claim anything, Intamin's own website defines what a giga is, while this coasters packing slip clearly say giga # 2 (which is what it would be).

Tom

Maybe in this case, giga stands for "Got It? Guess Again."

Why not go old-skool, just a lap belt or bar ONLY?

Ok I am confused, because on Intamin's website they also have a picture of a Superman Ride of Steel under the giga coaster page. Is that a mistake or does it mean there is a possiblity that this ride doesnt necessarily have to be 300 feet plus?

Bolliger/Mabillard for President in '08 NOT Dinn/Summers

Well, both of those pictures are after the detailed statistics of a giga coaster and below two pictures of MF. I suspect they wanted to show different aspects of what a giga coaster could look like and that is why the RoS pics were used - more to fill space and provide variety given there is only one giga in existence. lol.

Given the double spine track on site, it's highly unlikely this is not a giga.

Not to refute the possibility that it is indeed a giga-coaster, but that would be a crapload of money to be throwing in KD's direction. You could argue that the top 4 parks in the chain are CP, Knotts, KI, and CW...and now they choose KD for a giga? I understand that the other big parks in the chain recently received good coasters, but...?

Doesn't seem very Cedar Fairish. Maybe that's a good thing.

Well let's consider the glass half full instead of half empty, while I think the sucess at CW really opened CF's eyes on the potential of other parks in the chain. Also keep in mind that 50% of the entire US population lives between Washington DC and Boston. I live in Boston and can make it to KD in less than 8 hours (without trafic).

I've always felt KD needed a hyper, and with a RoS at SFA and AC at BGE, I think it makes good economic sense to build a giga setting itself apart from the competition. We can all bash Intamin on reliability and alike, but I think you'd be hard pressed to argue their rides are anything but visually striking.

I will bank dollars to donuts, this ride will be KD's new iconic ride.

I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but after looking at the photo with the packaging slip, I can’t really tell where people are getting this whole “Giga Coaster 02.” I see on the packaging slip where it says “Giga Coaster” then there seems to be a wrinkle in the paper with numbers, which to me looks like 92, then there are other numbers after it. Underneath that I see (2) DOCX. So to me, the whole thing reads:

Giga Coaster 92-1540

(2) DOCX

If this isn’t the right photo, could someone please point me to the photo that states “Giga Coaster 02.”

Thanks

Let the name game begin!

On the basis of other recent Cedar Fair hypers and gigas, I have a list of recommendations:

Razorback
Diamondmoth
Behemoback
Brokeback Mountain
Baby Got Back
Back to the Overly Restrained Intamin Future
Steel Millenium Mothback Force
Hands Down, Head Back-Back

Then again maybe they'll go the more traditional route:

Diamondhawk
Thunderback

Or given CF's recent trend in generically naming rides:

Giga Coaster The Park Across the State Doesn't Have

My author website: mgrantroberts.com

You forgot "Your BACK's Gonna NEED a Chriopractor."

What about....

Razorback

Nickleback,

Chickenhawk

X-hawk

Razorhawk

Top Thrill Hawk

Disasterback

Woodhawk Express

Banshee

AND Mean Hawk.

I think if BGW didn't have a hyper so close they would have gotten the diamondback / behometh version but to stand out they are going with the Giga. I just don't think i would expect this trend to continue past carowinds as the other parks maybe deemed too small.

I couldn't agree more, KD lucked out being the last one to the hyper table, and fortunately due to it's location and new owner, if probably going to get one hell of a signature ride. I don't see Carrowinds getting a giga though (too small imo), but deserve a great hype (no doubt).

What if it's a giga wildmouse?

My Top 5: 5- Alpengeist 4-Superman: Ride of Steel 3-El Toro 2-Milleunnium Force 1-Nitro

ridemcoaster's avatar

wow.. now that would be an extreme ride.. I want to throw in a spinning giga wildmouse.....with a water feature of course ;)

Something that has not been mentioned is that a lot of parks do have height restrictions on what they can build. KD is VERY lucky in that it doesn't have a restriction. If this is a giga, which it seems very possible now... Some parks have not added anything like this simply because local laws won't allow it.

It would be the 3rd ride in the park to top 300 feet.

1. Effiel Tower is 331 and a 1/2 feet high (thats the tip of the pilot light on top and the top viewing deck is 275 feet high)

2. Drop Tower (always will be Drop Zone to me...) at 310 feet high. I think the drop is 272...
