Kennywood sale makes fans nervous

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Resentment of foreign ownership is a key complaint among the Pittsburgh faithful in response to yesterday's announcement that Kennywood's parent company was sold to a Spanish company.

It is not posted. It is simply understood.

Sounds like my kind of place. :)

not mine, The American way is do what you want when you want to do it.

Chuck, within the law of course

Man, if only amusement parks could figure out a way to use that system! Oh wait a minute... ;)

Even if what I want to do is charge $15 for parking and $4 for drinks and I want to do it all the time? ;)

Someone should tell the Swiss that for many people here presidential elections have become a case of voting for the person you dislike the least. What I could never understand is in the past so many years, when facing a vulnerable or unpopular incumbent, both parties have managed to nominate a totally lame candidate.

As an aside, if you've never been to Switzerland, it is a very interesting place. It is disturbingly orderly.

I think that's why I love visiting Switzerland so much. They are a model of efficiency. The trains literally run like clockwork. Plus, the entire country is stunningly beautiful. I'd highly recommend a visit out there.

Oh yeah, they do an amazing job of blending contemporary architecture with historic structures. The juxtaposition is flawless. :)

Another very curious thing about Switzerland:
Despite having Intamin and B&M as local providers, the only new coaster in Switzerland in many years to be built is a...PAX coaster!!!

As the cherry on top: The ride (Cobra at Conny Land) should have been built and opened this spring, but PAX couldnĀ“t deliver because the government seized their factory!
It is alledgedly being built for next year.

This is what it is supposed to look like:

But who'd want to ride a B&M when you could go skiing half the year?

I've never thought about that, but you are 100% correct. For example, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne is quite modern in design, but somehow doesn't look at all out of place in a setting with much much older buildings.

The Germans, on the other hand, oy! Frankfurt is a well-known bad example. But, my favorite is Schloss Dagstuhl, a conference center. There is this lovely mountain home, and right next to it is this incredibly angular, glass-and-brick conference center. Looking at the two buildings next to one another is like listening to a horribly out of tune orchestra.

Mr Noble said "It is simply understood."

I know what you mean, over here we'd just call it 'common courtesy' or respect for the areas we share. I live in a nine apartment complex where we all have shared responsibilities and we sort of police ourselves nicely and if someone needs reminding we do it nicely...

Chuck, you put your point very concisely and to the point. It also prompted me to respond - personally I take people on a face to face basis regardless of anything. In the UK though (and we have just the same stuff going on here) it's that whole "I'm gonna do whatever I want and screw you" attitude that damages relations on so many levels from personal to political to international.

Oh and Gonch, I hate you man...

^Uh oh, I was next in line...LOL!111!eleven!!1

Americans have a history of having more land and spreading out over *low density* areas...makes for horrible drives, hehe. But when you're "stuck in Europe" (;)), there's really no way to "Go West, young man", every place is already inhabited. So you guys over there are kinda FORCED to get along with each other...we sent our antisocial types out West...

Hey, it worked well for over a century! ;)

Pennsylvania's one of the smaller states (area-wise) in the Union. But to cover the time and distance it would take to travel from Waldameer to Sesame Place-- basically a diagonal from NW to SE across the state, you could easily travel through several European countries. Particularly if you're talking about Central Europe and the Balkans, or the "Low Countries." (Is that term still being used-- or did that get retired with my 5th grade geography book?)

I'm sure Gonch could provide us with some more exact numbers. :)

Funny thing is though,I wouldn't doubt that Pennsylvania contains a more diverse population than an equal sized area of Europe. Even Pittsburgh probably has more nationalities living within it than most European countries.

I am a little sad with the decision, but I just hope the park only gets better. =)
Jim, I never said Do what I want and harm anyone or anything???????????? What gives? Some things in the country certainly need more structure and order but other than my job, nobody tells me where to be and when.

Thats all I meant. Not to be waistful and uncarring.

Chuck

I wasn't having a pop at you Chuck - it was just that your post made me contrast the ordinary guy on the street who tends to be aware of the impact of his actions and our *glorious leaders* who appear to not give a toss and overstep the mark without a second thought.

My point about not giving a damn about the consequences of ones actions was referring to the part of society in the UK who have no respect for other people, the law or anything else for that matter (ie, taking a ride on certain bus routes in my city can be quite the white knuckle ride for all the wrong reasons)...

I'm very much for people setting their own rules to live their lives by, I just fear that up and coming generations seem to be that bit less respectful and those we elect to serve us aren't setting a stellar example.

Either that I'm just getting old ;)

Hope that clears things up!
