Jackass of the Day, Week and Month

So let's say some small-minded poster contributes a boringly predictable and inflammatory post about a given topic for the 800th time.

I say the moderators should have the ability to alter the poster's name to "Jackass of the Day" followed by their own chosen name in parentheses. The user should not be able to restore or edit the title.

This would save loads of bandwidth--people would be less likely to respond with flame wars that span endless pages when they see that the following post was submitted by the "Jackass of the Day" before they even read it.

Further, a longer sentence (week or month) would paint the donkey ears and tail on anything else they may choose to bless the board with and serve as a strong incentive to keep the garbage to a minimum.

I think I'd rather be bothered by the useless posts than play the game, no offense...

Besides you'd probably have some people who'd want the title for some reason, thereby filling up the boards with more of those posts.

AirtimeAddict...thats true, but in some ways isnt.

it is most likely that about 25% wont want this title, and the other 75% that post repeat topics on purpose will want this, just because they might think its funny.

i for one, wouldnt want that title.

Actually, that's what they do over on Something Awful, and the best part of it is that people actually pay money to participate in those forums.

So while I think it's a great idea, it's not really this site's style to do it. Don't get me wrong, we've seen some real jackasses lately, but it's a line I'm not ready to cross. Perhaps as things evolve, this will be the "coaster site with more balls," but for now, we'll go on moderating as best we can and kill the crap as needed.

The most ironic thing about your suggestion, Playa, is that usually people criticize CoasterBuzz (actually me directly) for moderating too much. I guess I don't mind hearing it the other way from time to time!

Unfortunately, I can, off the top of my head, think of three Buzzers who would LOVE to have that title. You might be encouraging the wrong behavior there.

MWB - I can't really think of anyone who would gun for "Jackass of the Month," but I can think of quite a few who would go for "Smartass of the Month." I think there's a little "Smartass of the Month" in all the regulars around here, and that's a good thing. :)

Great idea! My local radio station has the Jackass of the Day in regards to some moronic person in the news. It's always funny to hear about them.

I think that it would be funny to add, but not too effective.

Hey, I get smartass of the month every month... no one else is allowed to have that title.

That's almost as good as Huggie LoDown's "Bama of the Week". Though I have to admit, I'd be one of the ones gunning for smartass/jackass/dumbass/asshole of the era.

I agree that there are kids here, but at the same time it's not my job to police what the planet's children are surfing. So while I agree with you, it's not even a tiny bit of my consideration.

No, the local affiliate shows it in syndication. The network has nothing to do with it.

My point was that Jeff probably doesn't want an angry e-mail from some parent after their kid is called a jackass for starting a thread about a coaster they think is b(EST) wether it violates TOS or not
