Hercules to be replaced by B&M floorless at Dorney

Posted | Contributed by Carl Hittner

Hercules roller coaster at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom lifted its last passengers on Labor Day. It will be replaced in two years by a $13 million floorless coaster, South Whitehall Township commissioners were told Wednesday. Designed by Bolliger and Mabillard of Switzerland, the firm that designed the popular Talon coaster, the new ride will be 3,200 feet long.

Eh. I feel another Drachen Fire coming on...

Good move on Dorney's park. Remember, (unexplainable) nostalgia for a mediocre ride doesn't matter two ways for the people that buy the tickets to ride.

Did he really say that DP4life? Where did you get that quote from? I believe that because the coaster was built around that terrain and could never be duplicated. One less terrain coaster in the already lacking terrain woodie category. I actually have the 1st drop magazine 2 page article that they did on Hercules opening season (also features magnum because it opened the same year). Im gonna try to get my hands on all the Hercules memorablia I can get now.

i overhear people saying they wont ride woodies like the big dipper or villain at sfwoa beause they dont like the roughness of wooden coasters. and its because of crap rides like raging wolf bobs, mean streak and hercules that they get this opinion.

tear it down!

"the facts remain that the ride had low ridership and was costly to maintain. the two of you who actually liked the ride are in the minority."

my statement isnt a personal attack.

i personally would like to see a reprofile of the ride, or a nice wooden coaster in its place, but i can see why they wouldnt want to risk installing another one. theyve been burned once before, why risk it again when they can get a sweet floorless that people will actually ride.

If only select people "understand" a ride, then it isn't viable financially.

Deal with it.

That sucks, I really liked Herc when I rode it last year. Getting a new B&M though, gotta love it. Why are they taking it down so soon? Isn't taking a coaster down pretty quick? I hope that it isn't just scrapped, maybe it can find a home a Knobels or something. The floorless does sound good though, underground tunnels will be sweet. *** This post was edited by Willh51 9/4/2003 7:40:17 PM ***
I think i'm gonna cry! That is absolutely ridiculous!

I don't feel like pooping anymore

I know I"m jsut starting but, I"m really upset that they are takeing herc down, I love that coaster even if it wasn't smooth, now teh only good wooden coasters are at kenny wood but those don't compare to herc.

Hmmm. Makes that first-ever visit to Dorney this year all the more important.

I didn't really like the ride that much, but I'm glad I got the chance to ride it... partially, because from looking at it, it kicks ass. I'd regret seeing pics not having been on it. We were there 2 days, the park was dead, and we only rode once. (Second ride in the park, #99 coaster overall. If I would've only gone on the mouse first, I'd be so much cooler having a defunct as my #100.)

The ride itself I wouldn't call good or bad. I'd just call it a dissapointment. From both a coaster fan's standpoint and that of a ride inspector/maintenance guy.

The thing looks so impressive, but when I hit that brake at the top of the big hill, I literally thought that we were going to stop. The big hill and turnaround was good. It probably would've hurt without that brake. However, due to the same brake, the last half of the ride was s-l-o-w-e-r than some kiddie rides. The ride definitely had potential, but I think ride design was forfeited to beauty design when building it. It is simply a poorly made coaster.

I didn't find it rough, just boring.

Glad I rode it, sure won't miss it.

Gonchar, just because you were out of town when I visited Dorney doesn't mean you have to move to Pittsburgh to meet me. Geez. I would've come back eventually.

Now I'm thinking go west in 2004. Skip my annual Hershey and hit HP/DP in '05.

I'm Also very dissapointed. The ride can give u a HUGE headache but its fun. I do not think they should Take it Down. I love that Coaster and I wish it could Stay because a lot other people enjoy the ride and its awesome especially the beggining and also the whole entire ride and im only 13 and I still have a whole life to ride it but now it's gonna soon be GONE. : <
haha yeah.....we know how DP is huh 4life?
Well all... I think it's stupid to argue about something we can't change... those of us who will miss her will mourn and those of you who won't will dance on her grave... Actually... I don't think that's possible unless you plan on dancing on the platform of the new ride... Oh nevermind...

In Memory of Hercules (September 1, 2003)
we will miss you!

Hercules was a bad ride. It was once good over 10years ago. The ride was suffering there. That side of the park was just dead. One thing I will miss on it is the location However with the new coaster it sounds like the location was not forgotten. I hope they really use the terrain like they did with Herc. I wonder if they would keep the name? Just a thought. The only thing that disappoints me is I wish I would have had a last ride on it. I have not rode it for a few seasons I just wanna know what I will not or will be missing. Too bad Dorney couldn't announce it sooner. However to be honest they it sounds like they don't even wanna waste anymore money on it which means forget farewells, etc., just shut it down, and start saving for the new coaster. Acceptable IM sure Dorney has great plans for the future.

R.I.P Hercules... It will never never forget the insane rides we once shared.

not to be rude, but some of you are acting like someone died! Hercules sucked, no ifs, ands, or buts. I could literally put my hands back and relax the whole way through. It was boring, overtrimmed, even though it did have a great [and picturesque] layout, the ride itself didnt live up to it. Lets just start a big Hercules bonfire, I call lighting the match....
Yeah, there gonna use that terrain real well WoodenCyclone. Didn't you hear? The new ride will go underground 5 times. Woopdee freakin doo! Actually, I feel bad for anyone that didn't get a chance to ride Herc this season as he was running great, smoothest it has been in years.

Everyone seems to be making a big deal of the floorless going under ground, but that is not what the news story says. Its says "below ground level." That could easily mean trench, not tunnel.

2005 is a long way away. Designs change. I just don't want people to get their hopes up.

Is this the first "modern" wood coaster removed?

I was wondering the same thing. It's going to be interesting to see how they dispose of that much pressure-treated lumber -- that stuff's a pretty big environmental hazard.

Not only that, but dew to the ride's Hillside layout, it will be un-practicle to re-locate the coaster.

I also took interest in the fact that this is the First "Modern" wood coaster to be removed. Hopefully it won't become a trend.

Couldn't they reuse the wood for a future wood project? I mean thats all I can think of rather than disposing of it. And no, you definately couldn't relocate a terrain ride, very unpractical.
