Hercules roller coaster at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom lifted its last passengers on Labor Day. It will be replaced in two years by a $13 million floorless coaster, South Whitehall Township commissioners were told Wednesday. Designed by Bolliger and Mabillard of Switzerland, the firm that designed the popular Talon coaster, the new ride will be 3,200 feet long.

Good move on Dorney's park. Remember, (unexplainable) nostalgia for a mediocre ride doesn't matter two ways for the people that buy the tickets to ride.

tear it down!
"the facts remain that the ride had low ridership and was costly to maintain. the two of you who actually liked the ride are in the minority."
my statement isnt a personal attack.
i personally would like to see a reprofile of the ride, or a nice wooden coaster in its place, but i can see why they wouldnt want to risk installing another one. theyve been burned once before, why risk it again when they can get a sweet floorless that people will actually ride.

I don't feel like pooping anymore
I didn't really like the ride that much, but I'm glad I got the chance to ride it... partially, because from looking at it, it kicks ass. I'd regret seeing pics not having been on it. We were there 2 days, the park was dead, and we only rode once. (Second ride in the park, #99 coaster overall. If I would've only gone on the mouse first, I'd be so much cooler having a defunct as my #100.)
The ride itself I wouldn't call good or bad. I'd just call it a dissapointment. From both a coaster fan's standpoint and that of a ride inspector/maintenance guy.
The thing looks so impressive, but when I hit that brake at the top of the big hill, I literally thought that we were going to stop. The big hill and turnaround was good. It probably would've hurt without that brake. However, due to the same brake, the last half of the ride was s-l-o-w-e-r than some kiddie rides. The ride definitely had potential, but I think ride design was forfeited to beauty design when building it. It is simply a poorly made coaster.
I didn't find it rough, just boring.
Glad I rode it, sure won't miss it.
Gonchar, just because you were out of town when I visited Dorney doesn't mean you have to move to Pittsburgh to meet me. Geez. I would've come back eventually.
Now I'm thinking go west in 2004. Skip my annual Hershey and hit HP/DP in '05.

2005 is a long way away. Designs change. I just don't want people to get their hopes up.

Is this the first "modern" wood coaster removed?

I was wondering the same thing. It's going to be interesting to see how they dispose of that much pressure-treated lumber -- that stuff's a pretty big environmental hazard.

Not only that, but dew to the ride's Hillside layout, it will be un-practicle to re-locate the coaster.
I also took interest in the fact that this is the First "Modern" wood coaster to be removed. Hopefully it won't become a trend.
