Hercules to be replaced by B&M floorless at Dorney

Posted | Contributed by Carl Hittner

Hercules roller coaster at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom lifted its last passengers on Labor Day. It will be replaced in two years by a $13 million floorless coaster, South Whitehall Township commissioners were told Wednesday. Designed by Bolliger and Mabillard of Switzerland, the firm that designed the popular Talon coaster, the new ride will be 3,200 feet long.

I'm late to the party as usual - sad, being the big Dorney fan I am.

Bitersweet news to me, I just found out that I only have two weeks left living 5 miles from the park. Before the end of the month, I'll be in Kennywood country. It's a very exciting and bold move - I wish I was going to be in the area to watch it all go down.

Dorney is still a very underrated park. This should really cement their spot as a great east coast park. If you're faliliar with the area where hercules sits, there's some very interesting possibilities for the new coaster.

As far as Herc going, mixed feelings. It wasn't a horrible ride, it just wasn't a good one. I took a lap every other visit to the park or so. I'm a little miffed that I won't be around for the removal. That'd made for some interesting photos.

I guess I have to head over before we move and get a gazillion pics and some video before its gone... :(

At least it gives me an excuse to come back in 2005 :)

Dorney Park Visits in 2003: 16

Was that you? When I was there like 3 weeks ago this girl crew member was putting the seatbelt over the empty seat in front of me and she fell and was like "Im having a bad day, Im just gonna stay here on the floor." The other crew member was a kid w blonde hair. That was also the day I got stuck on hercules twice and had to wait til a mechanic came up and fixed the shut down. I got 4-5 rides on hercules that day! hehe, thank god I did. Who would have known that I would never ride it again:(

What did the girl look like... I was there that day, but that may not have been me... I'm always there when she shuts down...

SLFAKE -- I was always under the impression that Hercules' mother was Hera, a goddess, and so he was demi-god. Of course, I might be experiencing a heavy Kevin Sorbo influence here, so I wouldn't be too shocked if I'm wrong (A little shocked, maybe, but not much.)

DorneyDante -- I was operating under the definition that a demi-god was one who had a God or Goddess for a single parent, but not both.

It'd be a little anachronistic, but I think the new coaster should be named Hydra.

Wow I hope that those stats are wrong from rcdb.com.

Height - 50'

Speed - 25.7

Duration - 0:48

Those have to be wrong.

4-5 rides in one day? Was that by choice or was it because you were stuck in the seat? ;)

Signature will be closed today. Sorry for the inconveinance.

SFGAMan, I think that was just a mistake. The Morning Call article and this news item says that the ride will be around 3200 feet long and 3 minutes in time. I think those are the stats for a standard Arrow corkscrew. ;)

It's kind of sad that a wooden coaster is being removed, but the fact that Hercules is going doesn't surprise me. I love the whole structure and general idea and concept of Hercules (which may live on to be another Drachen Fire), but it was a horribly unpopular and fairly bad coaster that wasn't worth their time and money put into it (like Jeff noted).

-Danny, not sure where the stats are from actually

DPGIRLIE, she was a white girl, young like my age (17-24). This was saturday, aug 16th, the day it rained like all hecks and everything kept shutting down then opening, it was really crowded that day too. Her hair was brownish.

I was stuck in the seat. I sat in gum and couldn't get up! No, but seriously, it was by choice. I really liked Hercules.

Hey, you asked how it could be done and I gave an example. I never said it made sense to do it. Don't read between the lines.

Couldn't agree with you more DP4Life...

To me what's going in is irrelevant... it's the fact that we're losing a good woodie...

the article says they spent lots of money to maintain the ride. i would imagine that just like the mean streak, the full speed of the train coming down the hill was destroying the structure.

"it's the fact that we're losing a good woodie."
is it really a _good_ woodie? or is it just a wooden coaster in the park?

the facts remain that the ride had low ridership and was costly to maintain. the two of you who actually liked the ride are in the minority.

bring on the tunnelled floorless! i will be there opening year!

Well... it was a good woodie... and those who rode it in the good ol days could agree... I was on it the first year it opened... actually... I was on it the first month it was open...

I like B&M floorless coasters, but I'm just sad that you have to take one out to put one in... oh well...

and I know plenty of other people who are sad to see her go!

DP4life-There were many of us who did like Hercules. We were just always overheard by the ones who complained about it. I will always stand as one who liked Hercules.
