Flying Turns Update

I took that picture from the sky ride. It's on the other side of the street that comes into the park. I'm assuming what ever it is, they're just storing it there. Could have been a ride or maybe just a picnic shelter. It's been there for at least a year because I remember seeing it last year too. *** Edited 10/23/2007 12:19:02 PM UTC by Jason Hammond***

It looks to me like a spare one of the roofs for the circular structures over by the haunted mansion. The one sits above a seating area and the other over a food vending area. *** Edited 10/23/2007 1:16:39 PM UTC by dragonoffrost***

Watch the tram car please....
That would be the cover that they put over the Italian Trapeze. You can see a picture of it in action

After veiwing my webcam captures for the day, I found that they had at least 4 Test Runs on Flying Turns today. It's hard to tell, but it looks like they have the five car trains on now. It's difficult to tell but all five of these pictures have a train in them. The 4 runs were between 2:34pm and 2:50pm. There may have been more test runs, but that's all that was caught on film.

Just thought I'd say there is a crane on the cam now, not sure what it's doing but sorry if it's been on there for a while I just checked there randomly now.

It looks like they removed a chasis from the track.

Ohh ok, thanks for the pics.
Nifty, thanks for sharing Jason. Would someone please climb the lift and point the webcam towards the lift and figure twelve? The view of the top of the hanger has lost its appeal (one man's opinion of course). It's nice that it's there in the first place, and I thank Knoebel's for that.

I agree with you they should move the webcam that would be nice... also it would be nice for some updates on the flying turns /knoebels site. but i guess we just have to wing it for now.

^haha.. wing it...
...It's late geeze.;)
Latest Knoebels updates from Coastin' Steve: they've started working on footers for the storage / work track that will run around the outside of the helix. They've scrapped the idea of running it over the road and have taken down the inconvenient tree. The "new" design will only extend a foot into the road.

If I understand correctly, the new bridge into the campground is going in a different spot from the existing bridge. Trees have come down for that too.

Last but not least, Twister is getting a LOT of track replaced. This is in addition to the large amount of track work last winter and during the fall season slowdown.

Hm, no replies since my bday lol, but it seems today a piece of the roof is sitting on the ground but it doesn't seem any from the station is missing. Just noticed it I don't know if it means anything, but reminded me are they putting a roof over the first helix still?

Possibly for the queue? That wasn't there 2 days ago. It must have arrived yesterday. It was the only day in the last few weeks I lost my captures. :)

I saw that roof on a visit to the park on Tuesday. It was in place above the stretch of side friction track from the end of the final turn to the roof above the station. BTW, when in place, it is not visible from either webcam. *** Edited 1/13/2008 7:24:17 PM UTC by ColorRadio***
I haven't heard whether any progress is being made on covering the helix, or even whether any progress is being made on the storage track. But it seems they're running into problems: (pasted from rrc since it hasn't shown up on google groups yet)

Well after missing a bunch of weeks for the hoildays I finally got
back up to Knoebels this weekend.
I had been told over the phone that there had been some major
changes in the few weeks that I'd been gone.
Still not satisfied with how the train is entering lift 2 from the
helix trough, it was decided a "track type adjustment" had to be done.
( I know what you're thinking, WTF is he talking about )
A section of completed trough <about 30 ft>, that runs from the exit
of the helix to lift hill #2, was demolished and side friction track is
being built in it's place.
While this is going on, the train testing has to be stopped, as
there's no longer a complete circut for it to run.
As the train has increased in lenth and weight the number of things
to be done in it's adjusting have also increased.
So the train "in development" is getting alot done to it while not
able to run on it's track.
Over near the rides entrance another smaller arched metal roof has
been assembled. This will be for the brake run that comes into the
loading barn.

On the Twister, talking to one of my fellow coaster carpenters,
about 1500 ft of track has been redone. He also noted they're still
not done yet. I was surprised that it needed that much work as it
didn't seem that bad at the PPP.

Over on the Phoenix I know that a good bit of trackwork was done on
the lower "out" turn as well as some right out of the loading barn,
but they still have a pile of wood and new track steel that I'm not sure
where it's going.
Once again, at the PPP and the Fire co weekends beyond, the
Phoenix seemed just phine, and not in need of as much attention as
it's getting.

The work on these 2 coasters shows one of the reasons why we like
Knoebels so much. They really do care about their rides and do repairs
before they "have to".

Upstream a few dozen yards from the covered bridge, the creek
has been sluiced between temp concrete walls and forms for the bridge
footings are getting set. Other than the clearing no other work has
been done for the roadway that needs to get up over the Pioneer Train
tunnels to enter the campground.

Actually you can see it on webcam #2, I'm looking at it right now, along with the crane right next to it. :)

Tom

Edited to add this, I'm going to be in the Knoebels neighborhood this upcoming weekend. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get down there to get some shots but I'm gonna try! ;)

I know you were just kidding tom, but he did say, "when in place".

Anyway, get some good pictures. :)

Thanks for the post Jim, I hope these problems don't cause too much delay in the opening of the ride.
