Fading favorite flat rides

Mamoosh's avatar

It was at Wild Waves the year Flare and I organized the CAC event...2004, I think that was?

The only time I went to Enchanted Village/Wild Waves was in 1999, when they had both a Tip-Top and a Looper. Since Six Flags has since bought and then subsequently sold the park, I would not be surprised to learn that both are gone.

Someone mentioned the Sky Wheel...those are more common on carnivals than in parks now (though I remember when Cedar Point had one...). They are not common, but Belle City Amusements has one...I just rode it today at the Ohio State Fair.

My fave is the Bayern Kurve.

I adored Wild Bull @ CAR, used to power-ride it.

Does anyone remember the old carnival "Hurricane" rides!? They were usually painted gold, and it was 4 rocket type cars at the ends of arms, attached to a center hub/tower.

There is still one operating at my home park, Adventureland in Iowa! The Lighthouse is its name and it was always one of my favorites too.

Bayern Curves are disappearing, and I love those rides. There is one of those Hurricanes with a small fair comany in WV. I think it's by WV Amusements.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Kennywood brought their Bayern Kurve back last year and it is still there.

Two parks that had a Sky Wheel in the past were the Pike in Long Beach and West View Park.

Hurricane (AKA Saturn 6) - there are only 2 remaining in parks in the US - Adventureland in Iowa and Coney Island NY - Darton updated their Hurricane model to the Downdraft which you can find at Knoebels - solid ride but I hate the unpadded restraints.

As mentioned in this thread (but just to confirm) there are still Tip Tops @ Sylvan Beach, Wild Waves/Enchanted Village, and Stricker's Grove

There is no shortage of Tilt-a-Whirls in the US. Morey's has three for crying out loud!

Morey's actually only has 2 tilt-a-whirls - the third unit is actually a Waltzer (pretty sure the only one in the US too).

[url][url]I think the type of ride is called a top scan? But the shockwave at Canada's wonderland is a great ride. Not sure why we don't see more of them around.

Here is the ride...

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Does anybody else think that Google images really suck anymore since they changed the format? It's not so much the format that bothers me, but they stick in all these images that have nothing to do with what you're searching for!

Back to your normally scheduled thread...

That irks me as well, RGB. I hate it when websites change things for no reason. If it aint broke...

This is were Jeff chimes in to reveal how amazing Bing is. Bing is pretty cool. I'd use it more if it had a more clever name. ;)

Don't get me started about Bing. It does some things really well (the airfare trending stuff is the tits), but voicing my opinions would likely violate an NDA or something. Mostly I just wish they'd make the "next" button at the bottom of the results more obvious.

Which one is the Waltzer? The Seashells? Have I ridden a Waltzer and don't even know it?

That ride used to be incredible, but they slowed it down this season. :(

EDIT:
Sure enough!

Wow, I've ridden a Waltzer! I always thought the Shells were just a new modern Tilt.

Shouldn't violate an NDA unless you disclose something they are planning/have done/etc thats not public.. Saying something isnt the best or "there are better ways to do it" shouldnt be against an NDA unless they are ultra paranoid about people having general opinions. Best they could get you for is slander, but even thats reaching.. Is the Empire that picky?

Course I work for the DoJ. We are constantly beat over the head about what litigation's (Federal, Civil, Anti-trust) we can and cant talk about, so im familiar with such things.

Bing Image Search is a royal pain in the neck because if you want to take advantage of your tabbed browser and open a bunch of candidate images in new tabs...well, you can't. And if you follow a link, you can't go back to where you were in the search results screen. On the other hand, I really like the continuous paging layout. I just wish it wouldn't hijack my browser's usual navigation features...

I'm aware of what an NDA is. :) It's pretty straight forward... if something says "MICROSOFT CONFIDENTIAL," don't talk about it.

Im sure you do Jeff. :) I was just hoping MS wasnt that picky about water cooler talk as well, which it almost sounded like.

My whole life is NDAs from my work (which is actually TS/SCI cleared documents in my world.. Way worse than NDA's will ever be) to Spouse's work which is NDAs.

I feel like all I can talk about is what I eat during the day and when I go to the potty :)

FYI, the video for the Cars' "Touch & Go" was filmed at Whalom Park and features their Tip Top, called Bouncer. View here.

Very cool find Moosh! On both accounts. MTV used to be so much fun when they played real music videos from real bands that actually played real instruments and wrote their own songs!!! That was a great time.

Great time for carnival rides too, for me anyway! The Tip Top's I used to ride I remember being called the "Bubble Bounce"!
