Go to Camden Park in WV and ride "Big Dipper" easily the most neglected, rickety, unsafe coaster I have seen or ridden.
The back seat is non-ridable due to the seat missing. Two years ago the apex of the lift collapsed as a train was climbing the chain. The ride op stopped the ride just prior to the train reaching that point. The park closed the coaster, nailed the boards back into place and re-opened the ride.
This was just weeks prior to me attending for the first time. Needless to say, I got my coaster count from it and opted not to re-ride.
Another great comparison to sheer terror would be riding either of the two larger coasters at William's Grove. I swear that Wildcat is missing half it's nuts and bolts. You have the option of riding with... or without a lap bar. OIY And the wooden one... ride op...enough said.

Except in situations like Shaggy's, I usually make sure that I ride rides in a park which have had deaths or serious injuries on them. When I share stories in line, it makes things much more fun. But it's much less fun when it happens to you... So far it hasn't. But I did have one experience when I though something was wrong. Acrophobia at SFoG had been sitting around the entire day with a mechanic working on it. Then they would lift it to the top and drop it, and it would make ungodly sounds. When it finally opened, right before I was going to ride, it came down and for no reason (seen to me) they closed it. So they started lifting it, and about ten feet up it dropped. The mechanics seemed surprised, it seemed unintentional. When it stopped at the ground, it made a sound that left no doubt in my mind that I would be in pain if I had been on it. But I was still going to ride! Suspense continues in next paragraph! Which is unrelated to topic!
I was about to ride. Danger was in the air! I could smell the wonderful smell of ride! I was about to ride Acrophobia. The big one! The one all the people said was great! With the tilting seats! And semi-standup! Oh boy! And then... and then... AND THEN... I had to leave with tour group. Before riding. Terrible!

I swear all these stories of restraints flying up are greatly exagerated, sure they may pop a notch but I have never experienced one coming completely loose. Especially still letting people ride if they do that, doesn't sound Kosher to me.
Ever been on Thunder Run at SFKK? That coaster is notorius for having its lap bars pop open mid ride. I didn't believe it until it happened to me in 2000. Rounding the last turn, heading for the station, the lap bar just decided to pop open. I wasn't worried, I thought it was kinda comical, esp when the op saw it. :)
On my last ride ever on Steel Phantom (RIP) at the base of the second drop, my harness popped up a couple ratchets. Again, no biggie, I knew I wasn't going anywhere.

Exactly how could an Arrow harness pop up a couple of ratchets, when your at the base of a drop? As RideMan said, they are not spring loaded, so they would not be able to counter gravity without an outside force. Add to that you were apparently at the base of a hill. This is where Gs are at the greatest. Additionally, Arrow harnesses are heavy. Did you have some special anti-gravity well form around you? That story just doesn't add up unless you mean at the top of a hill.

I have no signature.
I was once like you, never believed a harness could inadvertantly pop open mid-ride, but then it happened to me. Maybe once it happens to you you'll believe it, eh?
Anti-gravity well? Was that attempted humor? :-P
I've ridden one or two coasters in my day (347 to be exact) and I think I can tell when a restraining device does something "funny."
Besides, SRoS wasn't supposed to ever crash, right? Orient Express was supposed to stay on the track at all times, too, correct?
Simply put, shiznit happens. Have I proved myself to you yet? ;-)

I was just at Old Town and they actually painted that coaster (pink and yellow, how X-ish) so it looks presentable now. They had to have done something to the wheels and/or assemblies because it looked so much smoother.
You gotta love that mid course drop though, so potent.

As for myself, I nearly fell out of KW's Jackrabbit and nearly fell onto the floor on PKI's Vortex, but both times it was my fault.... unfastening my seat belt on the former and not pulling my OTSR down very far on the latter. I've gotten smarter since high school!

i always feel a little unsafe on The Chiller. i dont trust the lims. also, when those trains reach the point of return up there, i pray those brakes work and we dont go flying!. it freaks me out everytime, probably why its one of my favorite coasters.
You never engage in any brake up there...in fact theres 7 more sets of LIM's to make u go higher so you have enough momentum to return to the station. There IS a single brake at the VERY TOP but the train will never engage it, and if it does you'll end up valleying =)
