Dorney to receive new rides in 2004

Yeah I also heard that in the early nineties WWK was indeed keeping Dorney afloat (no pun intended.)

I'm not sure if Dorney was going under (pre-CF), but I don't think that they were performing as well as the owners would have liked, either. They probably found that, by selling to CF, they made more money than they would have by operating the park for the foreseeable future.

While I can't agree with CF's lack of care when it came to classic Dorney attractions, I also can't deny the fact that CF's changes have resulted in a park that is more competitive with Six Flags and Hershey- both of which would have posed serious problems for the "old" Dorney of the late eighties and early nineties. While there are seemingly dozens of losses, there have been quite a few gains, too. Steel Force... Talon... Dominator... the new B&M.

While I loved JTTCOTE, I can't say that I would have preferred that over Steel Force.

Of course not Rob, me either. Its still the principle. They could have combined the old with the new. Kennywood is a good example. I am also not complaining about the direction that CF is taking Dorney. I just wish they would have made better decisions when it came to tearing rides and attractions down.

The butchering of Dorney was indeed tragic but at least the whip is still there.

I hope I haven't cursed it by saying that. :)

(Dorney was supposed to receive the coaster that became Valleyfair's Wild Thing in 1996 but the problems with the neighbors forced a delay and caused Steel Force to be built in 1997),

Incorrect. While Dorney *was* supposed to be the first CF park to receive a Morgan hyper, the design of the ride was barely started when it became obvious the ride could not be installed at Dorney for the 1996 season. This wasn't solely because of neighbors, however, but because of ground instability (during ground testing, they discovered an underground spring which ceased further development pending more research into what ground was solid and what wasn't). When the decision was made to transfer the ride to Minnesota instead, it was barely more than a lift and second hill at that point (read: the turnaround design hadn't even started). Thus, the ride was slightly adjusted to fit the Valleyfair site and a new one was designed for Dorney in 1997. So no, the Wild Thing design we see today was never meant to operate at Dorney. This comes directly from Dana Morgan via an interview.

I knew that turnaround woulda never fit!Lol, Thanks for the info coasterdude!

What I was implying was that the coaster project that was supposed to come to fruition at Dorney in 1996 wound up going to Valleyfair that year and a new "project" became Steel Force in 1997. I wasn't sure just how much of Dorney's 1996 design wound up at Valleyfair (I am sure you are right about the turnaround not yet being designed), but I couldn't have imagined it being a case of simply taking the coaster design and dropping it into an entirely new site (PA vs. MN).

Still, if Wild Thing did retain Dorney's lift hill and first hill, then I think it is safe to say that, if the coaster were indeed built at Dorney as planned, it would be an entirely different beast than what Dorney has in Steel Force. From what I understand, WT's first hill is quite tame when compared to SF's. and that tamer first hill would probably have altered any elements that followed it.

O man you all are just confusing me, lol. lets just end it by saying that Dorney was the first CF park planned to get a hyper. That plan ended in VF getting CF's first hyper due to Dorney having to deal with the neighbors. But If Dana Morgan said that I guess we'll have to go with it.

Actually, CP was the first SF park to get a hyper!

This isn't that confusing, really... Dorney was supposed to get a hyper in 1996. Because of the ground stability issue and difficulty with the neighbors, the project was sent to VF and Dorney got their coaster in 1997.

Right Rob, and the coaster VF got isn't the exact one that Dorney was going to get since Cedar Fair switched locations while the ride was still in the planning stages.

Didn't you already do this once last week and the posts got deleted? This is an old topic!
Why, oh why do you necro old threads?
Agreed. The thread is over two years old! Luckily it had 2004 in the title, or a lot of people (myself included) would have probably read through a good chunk of it before realizing.

...And also, way to edit your own post then so there was no content. You're a real winner.

I've often wondered from time to time, how to write good poetry- and make it all... Work.
