Dorney to receive new rides in 2004

Maybe they'll get an Xtreme Trampoline like CP just got...that's something to look forward to!

Nelson, it's probably just slang for a flat ride. Spin and Spue, Roudy Rounders, Flat Rides, all probably the same thing.

A new dark ride would be nice... perhaps something from Sally. It would be a good choice for a family "attraction", and would definitely plug a hole that was left when Journey To The Center Of The Earth was bulldozed years back.

So are we pretty much in agreement that 2004 will just be general park improvements? That would help get the aprk ready for that floorless in 2005.

I don't think I've *ever* used the term Roundy Rounder, but if I did, it would be referring to one of those awful Round-ups (sorry Paula, good addition, just not for me)...;) Wasn't "Rounders" an early version of the game that developed in the national snooze known as baseball?

Rob A, are you trying to get on my good side (I'm not even sure which side that is, LOL)...but suggesting a Sally ride, that will definitely do the trick! :)

IIRC, isn't Dorney lacking a swing set? Not that it replaces Herc, but it would HELP tide you over until the floorless gets up and running...esp. in combination with a nice new Sally-Brand shoot-'em-up....:)

I just read on ACN that they are going to replace Excalilbur with a B&M floorless thatll be 3200 feet long and go under ground level 5 times. Doesnt sound like a Huss anything to me :) http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-b3_5swhitehallsep04,0,4092171.story

There is the link for it, i hope that it works

davidnc25, yes, Herc (not Excalibur) IS gone, the Beemer floorless IS replacing it, but won't be in until '05....we were already moving along as to what Dorney *might* add in '04....;)

rollergator: I wasn't TRYING to get on your good side, but if an enthusiasm for Sally dark rides will do it, then I'm glad :)

Seriously, I can't see why more parks don't add them. There are more than a handful of parks out there that got rid of their classic dark rides (ummmmm Dorney, are you listening?) or never had one to begin with. A Sally ride makes sense because they are very family-oriented, plus they are interactive, which puts quite an interesting spin on an idea that many parks probably feel has been beaten to death (hence the reason for no new dark rides.)

I honestly have a hard time trying to figure out why parks aren't adding these things like Wild Mice and S&S towers!

I honestly don't see why CF:LP doesn't go ahead and add a Sally Ride to each of their parks. I for one think that the Ghost Blasters ride up at KCS is one of the better rides there, and I love each of the Scooby Rides. SO....why not theme a Sally ride to the "Great Pumpkin" episode where you have to "shoot ghosts" with the Peanuts gang? CP could easily use the old Pirates building over by Blue Streak, KBF could use the old Bear-y tales building, etc.

Sounds great to me. In The Days of My Youth, CP had 3 cool dark ride/walkthroughs that I remember fondly: Fun House, Pirate, and Earthquake. I really miss not having something like that around anymore.

Journey to theCenter of the Earth was a great dark ride @ DP. I used to love it as a kid. I always wondered why they ripped it out. Then again, I wonder why they ripped many of the origianl Dorney rides out. Dorney could def benefit from another one of those.

Worlds of Fun had a fun little walk-through called the "9th Street Incline". It was taken out due to the DA law that was passed around the time it disappeared.

Swoosh, I highly doubt that DP will only receive general park improvements. I don't think (if my memory of their history serves me correct) that any year since CF has owned DP that they have not added at least one new attraction every year. I know for sure that a new attraction was added every year since 1997. I highly doubt they will "quit" now.

hehe OOOPS sorry bout that rollergator...i was without my pc for 2 weeks while i was on vacation, i thought i was discovering some new news about the floorless at dorney....i shoulda known better LOL
I'm sure that JTTCOTE was removed because it was 1) old, and 2) low capacity. In other words, Cedar Fair wanted no part in upgrading the ride (too bad, have you seen what Sally did with Rye's Old Mill?) and probably figured that no one would miss it. Two mistakes in thinking, if you ask me.

Noone would miss it? Ouch, that one hurt Rob. Lol. Kennywood's old mill was as old if not older. yes? This begs the question that I will always have about CF. Why is destroying a ride always the quick fix. Imagine the major thrill park that dorney is today with all the major coasters with that old charm of Alfundo, Journey, the meteorite, rockets, water skooters, Thunderhawk/bumper car station. Would so much more be a classic park. As far as journey goes, I still associate dorney with that green monster that sat atop the roof. I know many people who can vouche for me and say the same thing.

DD, you misinterpreted me. I never said that *I* felt that way, I said that Cedar Fair was probably thinking that. You should know from previous Dorney posts that Journey is just one of the many things that I miss from the "old" (pre-CF) Dorney.

Can you blame CF for removing the ride from an operations standpoint? Not really. The ride was old and probably was due for a major overhaul. It was a rather low-capacity ride, and when the time came to decide whether or not it was worth a sizable investment in order to keep it running, CF chose to remove the ride and put the investment dollars elsewhere. On the other hand, there is something to be said about the charm of an older attraction and what it does to the ambiance of a park... there are some things that are worth more than the money involved, and CF always seems to miss out on that point. The ride, nestled into the Thunderhawk's real estate, didn't take up too much space, and I find it hard to believe that it would have been so difficult to find a new home for the Scrambler that currently resides where Journey once stood.

By the way, has anyone noticed that the Thunderhawk's old station foundation still stands? I find it odd that Dorney chose to demolish the upper portion of the station but left the concrete walls that date back to the unfinished water attraction that pre-dates the Thunderhawk/Coaster. The beginning of the ride seems to strange, even so many years after the station was changed, because of the now-pointless straight sections of track that lead up to the lift hill (it used to be the separate loading/unloading areas and the pre-lift tunnel).

I absolutely loved Journey to the Center of the Earth and am very sorry to see it gone.

I also hate that they removed the Thunderhawk tunnel. IMO, that was the best part of the ride. They definitely needed to redo the station since the queues were so small that even the skinniest people had to walk through them sideways, but they could've still kept the tunnel.

O god, that queue for Thunderhawk that was inside the bumper car building was so small and cramped. Yeah, that def needed to be redone.
