Does a single login system interest you?

Are you more likely to use other sites for the first time if they have those options available?

I'm not, but I'm not at all representative of a "regular Interwebz user."

Probably because the observed behavior of other sites, particularly those that use the Facebook commenting system, does not match with your description of the expected behavior. You post a comment on a newspaper site, and all the sudden your "wall" says you "like" that newspaper and tells the whole world that you commented on the story. That's what we have come to expect from systems that use Facebook authentication, whether that's what you'd do with it or not.

Personally, I don't want my activities in one corner of the Web to be broadcast to another, because quite frankly, I am in enough different communities that each really doesn't want to know what goes on in the others. But at this point, I think this is deceased equine flagellation.

More to the point, I hate re-entering information, and I don't understand why so many sites require so much. As I recall, registration at *Buzz is basically username, name, and email address, which is really not a big deal. I'd prefer to have the option of picking a username and password on any given site, if only because that allows me to have multiple online personalities.

Now, if we could have single login across the *Buzz sites... 8-)

If given a choice between using an already existing account on another service like Google or Facebook or Yahoo to log in to a site, and creating my own account on that particular site, I will always side with creating a unique account for a site.

I actually get pretty annoyed with sites that *require* you to use something like Google or FB to login or comment or whatever. I don't care if it is "just for login/authentication purposes" - I don't trust it one bit.

I'm a Facebook Frequent Flyer - but I don't trust them one Iota with any of my stuff - hence my cheesy photo's etc that I post there. For that reason alone I'd give this idea a "-" 1.

Thanks for the thought though, innovation is a good thing sometimes.

I would not personally use it... I like how it is now :)

I think people should have to use a Coasterbuzz account to log in to Facebook. Muahahaha!

Usually, yes.

roller coaster nerds aren't really the public at large.

But are, on average, large when compared to the public. ;-)

Should I be that guy and suggest using OpenID directly?

Well, it's a variation on OpenID anyway, only most regular people can understand it.

You know what, that's a good enough reason for me.

I was thinking about this a little more and I think all I would really want is a unified login for my POP sites. It doesn't have to be fancy and get me logged in using my Google or Facebook credentials. I just want to share credentials between Coasterbuzz, Pointbuzz, and Mousezoom. (Not being a 'buzz really throws me off there, by the way.)

...and I keep suggesting to Jeff that he ought to have some kind of a database linking feature so that if a particular topic happens to show up on both CoasterBuzz and PointBuzz, that discussion could be synchronized between the two communities. Kind of like cross-posting in the Usenet world.

(user ducks, as he always does when he mentions Usenet, as that is usually Jeff's cue to throw something at him...)

Usenet is kinda like AM radio. There isn't much action there anymore.

I've actually prototyped some stuff for cross-site authentication, but not for any other shared resources. Just getting to a point where users have one login for multiple sites, and reconciling the many accounts they have, is a huge pain in the ass. Then you have issues of different e-mail addresses used, and the fact that the forums use e-mail addresses as well to send reply notifications. It sounds like a simple problem, but once you start going down that hole, you realize it's not.

I like it when sites use Google or LiveID or whatever, because I don't have to come up with some new ID and password every time, each with its own ridiculous password requirements. For example, my electric company requires nine characters, a capital letter, a number and a special character. Seriously? Do I really care if someone else wants to pay my electric bill?

Here's a real-life version: On Stackoverflow, a site I often use, their login page looks like this:
http://stackoverflow.com/users/login

The first time I ever used it, I didn't need to create some new ID or password, I just started using it. I love that.

Whatever happened to Mousezoom?

I like the idea of a single login - cuts down on the number of usernames and passwords I have to keep up with. But, that doesn't mean I want my CoasterBuzz identity to be my Facebook identity, either - I'd love if I could sign in with Facebook but still be SFoGswim.

Welcome back, red train, how was your ride?!

MouseZoom is still there... we just really haven't taken the time to populate it with content.

If this is the relevant question, then the answer for me is most definitely yes.

Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

It was the question, and I appreciate someone answering it. :)
