Do you wanna be a Roller Coaster Designer?

Interesting topic. I just want to know how many buzzers out there are engineers already??
Apparently I'm one of the few on this site to have already chosen and entered my career. :)

You can't spell "dishonorable" without "honorable."
This thread should be tied in to the "Things that make you feel old" thread
I wonder how many enthusiasts have made it to be designers.  Mike Boodley is one.  (He sure makes GREAT coasters!!!) Any others?

I'm an engineer, but my work has nothing to do with coasters :( (although we do alot of work with fiberglass)
Antuan: I'm willing to guess that SGRho already knew *you* were an engi-nerd ;). Of course I am too.

On a completely unrelated note us 3 should hook up @ SFGAdv sometime(s) this season.

x/3 + 5/9[log(-8-3x)].....yes, I have no life!

actually, x+3 + 5/9[log( |3x-8| )] ...... (-8-3x) would create a negative number, for which the log doesn't exist (what power of 2 would be negative???)
sorry to be technical, but its what I do all day right now at this point in school.
BTW, i would also like to get into the coaster industry, will it happen??? Maybe not, but I'm taking it on from a different angle.  I am studying computer systems engineering with an emphasis in embedded systems, as well as taking some classes that sort of apply, such as advanced logic, and transportation systems (lots of redundant logic for safety reasons)......the good thing about my choice is that i love the field anyways, so I'm not out anything if I don't get to do coaster computer systems.

Two things...

Well I personally have engineering in my blood. My grandpa was a clock builder, my dad's an engineer for DaimlerChrysler, and I'm out to become the ever infamous Roller Coaster Designer. I'm already in the advanced math and science courses, and I'm taking Physics, FST (Functions, Statistics, and Trig.) and CAD drafting next year. I'm hoping for MIT, but lookin at the D in Chem right now, it's not looking good. But I can dream.

Second off, what's the algebraic free-fall formula? I think it's something along the lines of h=1/2gt²+vºt+hº, where "g" is the gravitational constant of either 9.8 m/s, or 32 ft/s, "t" is time in seconds, "vº" is the initial velocity, and "hº" is the initial height? I'm pretty sure thats it, but I'm not sure about the order of the variables.... yeah...

I want to do something like coaster designing and I think that I could do that seeing how I an getting good marks in my math and my engineering class right now and I frecuently am imagining different possabilities for rides.  One of the personality test thinges I took in my computers and carrers class gave me a bunch of different engineering fields so I might have a slim chance.  Even if I don't do this, I would still like to be an engineerer of sorts.  It seems like something that I'd be good at seeing hoe I like physics.

Actually my answer works for x> -2.6666666

I, like most of the posters in this topic wanted to be a designer, until I try my hand at it(I touch more on that later on), and let me tell you its not anything like I thought.

The truth is that it takes a lot more than just drawing some circles and lines on a piece of paper. It takes alot of time to just get a little bit of the design to "flow". Once you come up with a track layout, you have to design a suppport system that will be clear of the car's path, yet at that time you need to have a car designed so you know the clearance levels. There is a lot of work that goes into the these moster machines and I commend those who take the time and have the smarts to design these things.

Over the summer, I decide I would try my hand at model building(the model is not yet finished...). Since I had to confine my model to a certain space, I was talked into designing the model, in its fullest, before I even thought of buying wood. Remember I am talking about a model here... Just to calculate the lift hill, I drew three blue prints sheets(and for the model all togehter I have 50+ drawings). The moral behind that story... I somewhat found out what goes into creating the rides.... its HARD work.

Perhaps I will get to be a queue designer some day :). Now what classes would I have to take for that... :)

I have wanted to be one...and I still do want to be one. I am in advanced classes in math, and science...and I am doing homeschooling so I will most likely graduate highschool 2 years early so then I can gain some extra experience before college and hopefully get some college credits.

The only reason I wouldn't become an engineer is if I became a high payed model or an actor...and I never thought either would happen...but I got a modeling contract not too long ago and I hope it opens up doors for acting.

I still would like to go to college for mechanical engineering whether I become a model/actor or not. We'll just have to see. I really enjoy making supports structures though.

I just realy want to know this.

Ok, I want...ed to become a coaster designer until I read this post and heard how rare it is. Now Im going after my life-long goal which is to own and operate my own amusement park. Somthing like a pre-built park like Idora or Whalom soemthing that is kinda already built.

First I want to become a park manager and then get the feel of what I have to do to run the park.

And, which courses do I have to take to become a manager?

Now with all that said am I dreaming too high?
