Community features

I have no interest in the blog/calendar ideas, but I think we've struck gold with Dan's coaster/park count plan. That would be great if you could set something like that up.

It would be a nice "sister feature" to the buzz level/intensity/rerideable features on the coaster pages.

You could even take it a bit further and have rateable features for parks, too. Maybe service, food, atmosphere, and would you return.

Come on, fhqwgads!

Dan's idea is good, especially if you have the ability to add.."this one time on Magnum..."
I keep a Livejournal and even flirted with the idea of a Coasterbuzz community. LJ's existing roller_coaster community is somewhat dead. But, then, it seems like the the message boards here and a community there would overlap in functionality.

That said, I wouldn't use a blog here 'cause my friends couldn't access it.

The idea about coaster data does seem interesting, however. Quite like the service linked to in my signature, even. Hey, maybe I can start a Coasterbuzz group there.

Some nerd shortened the words "web log" and thus you have "blog." It's just an online journal. They're all the rage these days.

Well, they were the rage... Now all the in crowd went to SXSW and we are all left as posers.

(I had friends who were in the blogging in-crowd as it were.. Never mind. I'll shut up now.)

I personally outgrew the whole "blog" thing before the web even existed. Anyone else remember .plan files? (Outside of id software and the other game developers, that is)

.plan files? You mean those things that show up when somebody fingers you? Those files that you create when you first get your UNIX account, then promptly forget about until someone reminds you of it and you see what useless crap you put in there three years ago?

joe., are you referring to the SXSW I think you're referring to, where everybody involved with AAA-format radio in any way, shape or form descends on Austin for a week? :)

I have my blog at http://alex.sfne.com and am sick of the upkeep. Gimme a w00t for a remotely hosted blog. :)

RideMan, you don't need UNIX to get fingered around here. I think I got at least one newbie to give me a finger a couple of times today! :)

(time for jimmybob to show his age too): GregLeg - nice sig. I remember that game! And .plan too...

On Topic: Personally, I don't think I would find those features useful. There's my 2 cents.

I'm still confused - so a "blog" tracks when you come to the site or something? Or is it essentially a journal that you type in and others can read it? If so, don't we already have trip reports? I can't say as i'd be too interested in reading about other people's daily lives. Although, maybe i have the completely wrong idea about what this is. As for a calendar, the meeting calendar does just fine for me, and the calendar app on my computer is all i need for my personal stuff. As it is i never use the "personal links" feature - that's what my bookmarks bar is for.

Dan's idea sounds cool - while we're talking about updating the Track Record feature, how about a way to make a "top ten coasters" list (sort of like the one on Coastergrotto.com). I know you can rearrange the coasters in your TR as it is, but that's a pain in the butt and it still doesn't specify why you have them in a specific order.

Oh, and how about a members only chat room? Seems it would be easier to get to know members that way, and if it were members only, it would filter out flamers or people that weren't particularly serious. Or, if it's possible, maybe a members AIM status next to their coasterbuzz name in the forums/news post. That way if someone makes a point that you want to discuss with them right away, you can do so without turning the forum into a nit-picky discussion (or dare i say argument) between just two members.

Essentially, anything that makes it easier to communicate with and get to know fellow members/enthusiasts would be great.

just thoughts.

Would someone mind explaining to a rather young UNIX user what exactly a .plan file is? Oh yeah, I think a blog's a good idea, even though I've already got my own.

.plan files were where you could write stuff about yourself... what your "plan" was. :) Then you could use the finger command to get info on it. The e-mail program actually has (or had) a finger function in it.

Dave -- EXACTLY. It's funny how many people I knew who would set up a .plan file their freshman year, and then discover when they were graduating that they'd never updated it.

The circle of friends I hung out with (CS and ECE geeks) went really overboard. We'd update our .plan files quite often, even daily sometimes, with whatever was on our minds at the time (sound vaguely familiar?)

We added code to our UNIX logon and logoff scripts that would write something like

"Greg is currently staring blankly at raven.eng in the Wean Cluster, and has been since 2:30am on June 30."

and

"Greg was last seen putting his head through raven.eng and fleeing from the Wean Cluster at 8:30pm on July 2."

I miss being able to say "finger me". Actually, you still CAN set up plan files sometimes, but most ISPs have disabled the finger daemon because of various security holes.

jimmybob -- wasn't that a great game? Did you know that the Atari 7800 version of Impossible Mission had the distinction of being TRULY impossible due to a bug? Not very good QA there...

I'd never use either.

What I would use though, is the option to hide only my e-mail address in my user info.

I snap flyers.

What about a link to someone's trip report within their user info? Granted, its not very useful, but some might enjoy it.

Just because I have a short attention span doesn't mean I

I like dan's ideas. I would not use a blog or calendar.
