Columbus Zoo to open Tidal Twist roller coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Columbus Zoo's newest attraction is set to open next month. The new family spinning roller coaster, Tidal Twist, is the first coaster of its kind in Ohio. It is 36 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 30 mph.

Some evidence supporting Richard's observations that the Columbus Zoo installation is likely not the IX coaster...

Reithoffer Shows brought their Wild Mouse to a carnival in Paramus, NJ in June. It can be seen in this video beginning at roughly the 5:06 mark. It appears to still be a pretty good match for the coaster in IX photo including the station railings which as Richard indicated differ from the zoo coaster. It's also slated to be at the upcoming WV state fair.

Except the IX coaster was owned by Bates Amusements, as they were contracted to provide all of the rides for IX Park. Not Reithoffer.

Except that Bates Amusements did not/does not own any coasters. In fact I don't think Bates owns anything that won't rack on a single trailer. Coasters at the I-X Center were always booked-in, and included Amusements of America, Ray Camamck Shows, and others.

And Reithoffer's own social media, example here, showed it was their mouse at IX in recent years.

So, just to stir the pot some more...

I rode this today. I think it's pre-owned; there is pink paint showing in places on the track where the green has scraped off.

Anyone care to identify a compact model with pink track that has disappeared from the fair circuit in the last year?

RCDB has managed to identify it as having once belonged to North American Midway Entertainment:

Our long national nightmare is over.

Excellent write-up Richard, here is what I can add:The current Reverchon company was formerly known as SAMC-AVIA and was formed by ex Reverchon employees in 2008 after the previous Reverchon was dissolved. SAMC-AVIA has been building coasters since 2016 like you noted, but they are a major player when it comes to maintenance in Europe.

So far, they've dissassembled water slide fiberglass flumes, transported them to their factory and restored them to new condition. Oxygenarium, the prototype WhiteWater West spinning rapids was recently redone by them. They've also provided a new fleet of boats for the Intamin shoot the chutes at Parc Asterix and did major work restoring the trains that run on Disneyland Paris Big Thunder Mountain, a Vekoma product there. They are wizards with fiberglass.

The Reverchon story reminds me of when I discovered that Togo rides was still active in Japan. After Togo went bankrupt in 2001, the Kyushu maintenance office somehow survived and supports Togo attractions in Japan with new parts, ride vehicles and annual maintenance, like PTC provides in the US for their trains.

Is anyone aware of what might happen to the Primeval Whirl rides? Just makes me sad to see those sitting there.

Judging by how Disney scrapped perfectly good S&S Space Shots that were at Disney California Adventure, they will be scrapped eventually. The Primeval Whirl cars were spotted leaving on flat beds going toward a recycler a few months ago.

I honestly had no idea there were S&S towers at DCA.

If Universal didn't bother trying to find a home for Dueling Dragons, I can't imagine Disney will try and sell Primeval. Has Disney ever sold a ride to a non-Disney park to relocate?

There are other Disney parks…

At DCA the towers were at the far turnaround of California Screamin’, near Orange Stinger. I think the theme carried the boardwalk vibe, like a couple of Hi Strikers or something.

They did, with tarps showing score levels on the sides of the towers. When they announced the DCA refresh, they got rid of them as they were a blight visually on that side of the park with no waits and poor guest reviews, thanks to the awful scream shields on the restraints.

Today, the repainted Flik's Flyers was saved from Bug's Land and installed on their spot as the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind.

They were entitled Maliboomer. Apparently they co-existed with Tower of Terror for 6 years, which almost certainly didn't help their popularity.

Now Maliboomer sounds like what you'd call the retirees living on the coast

Ugh, that's brutal. Will not show those photos to my kid.

I have a hard time believing that they closed the ride(s) then let them sit. I’d think that Disney would have removed them immediately so as not to call attention and to get them out of the public eye. Or are they ok with unsightly and unavailable attractions sitting around?
And now that I’ve said that I guess EPCOT has had their share of derelict attractions like parts of Imagination, Horizons, Body, and stuff like that. But Primeval Whirl would have been such an easy dismantle as it was basically a portable ride. Those rides could’ve been gone with a week of after-hours work. The EPCOT rides involved pavilion structures.

...and an abandoned pavilion building is just one of those things that is Somebody Else's Problem and you don't even notice it's there, or it masquerades as something else. Kind of like that big warehouse looking thing in Jurassic Park at IOA; it's just kind of there and nobody notices that there's no real access to it...

(except, of course, through mountain under the castle in the next zone over...)
