Coke for all of Cedar Fair?

We'll Coke sponsors the Big Dipper at SFO. The only thing i can't understand is why would a major company sponsor a ride so old, i mean the rides been paid for for years. Why does it need a sponsor.

because the Big Dipper is the "real thing" like Coke. It is one of the historical beauties of coasters
well, i prefer pepsi/mountain dew
Pepsi sponsors Snake River Falls at Cedar Point so would it still be sponsored by pepsi if they switched to coke????? well srf is a good ride!
God I hope so. I hate Pepsi and thats all they had at CP this summer. My girlfriend, brother and his girlfriend were bummed too so we filled up the fridge in the room at breakers and suffered until we got back to the room!
Its funny everyone where i'm from drinks pepsi and mt. dew.

On ride sponsorships...

A ride sponsorship usually has nothing at all to do with paying for the ride. The sponsorship is merely an agreement between the park and the sponsor where the sponsor pays an agreed-upon fee (cash or in-kind) to the park in exchange for an association with that particular attraction.

For this reason, sponsorships can (and do) change and shift. A ride sponsored by Alltel this year might be sponsored by Kellogg's Froot Loops next year, and by nobody at all the following year. If you consider each ride as a separate billboard, rather than thinking of it in terms of the advertisers paying for the attraction, it makes a lot more sense.

I think the person that referred to sponsorship was thinking more along the lines of Pepsi Max Big One. In that case the sponsor would have to foot quite a bit of the bill up front.

Actually, Randy, I was thinking about the person who asked why the Big Dipper...long ago paid for..."needed" a sponsor. That doesn't mean that the sponsorship money doesn't aid in the construction of a new ride (such as The Big One); it's just that there is not necessarily a direct relationship there. It's kind of like naming rights for a new arena...

From Columbus, OH where the new arena opened last week...
Dave,

In that case I agree completely. However, I'm sure some of that money helps in terms of maintenance.
