Coasting for Kids 2010?

I'm in for Cedar Point this year!

Looking forward to it! I pity whoever chooses to marathon Timbers for 10 hours straight at MiA ;)

It's only for a few hours. Part of the day is on Thunderhawk.

<edit>

After more searching, I found the links to everyone's pages. Not sure why I couldn't find it a few days ago.

Keep in mind that not all of these are participating in "Coasting for Kids" These are all fund raisers for GKTW. But, some are doing different events.

If I'm counting all the right people, we're up to $1,645. There are many people who don't have any donations yet. I myself just got e-mails out Sunday. So, it looks like a good start so far. Carrie is doing especially well.

Thanks "Anonymous". ;) That was a very nice thing to do, and totally unexpected. Hopefully it will snowball into more from others.

I am making up some business-sized cards with my First Giving profile web site address printed on it. That way I wont have to write it down every time I tell someone about it, and they'll have it in their pocket when they get home.

That's a good idea Travis. I might do the same.

Hmmm, I could ride Steel Force all day. Hmmm, do I want to do that?

Yes. :)

So I am signed up for Valleyfair. My question is if the park or GKtW will send out more information as to when to show up, what to do when I get to the park, etc? All I got in the confirmation email was that I was registered for the event.

Of course, you'll be contacted. No worries.

I have a few questions; they may be "stupid questions", but I have to confirm. I have found a few people want to donate cash and/or check. Who do they write the check to? I assume Give kids The World. Will there be a GKTW representitive to take the cash and check at the park event? I have figured out that if people donate this way, I can still put their name and donation amount on the website. Am I correct?

Other than that, I am starting to get more people interested in donating.

I'm not sure if there will be a GKTW rep there or not, but you can make the check out to GKTW and give it to the park rep I'm sure. Worst case, you mail it to Orlando. :) And yes, I believe you can do a "write in" for your total on the First Giving site.

I just did my first "write in" for $25 cash! I have raised a total of $100 so far!

The news story, publicizing my participation in the event, will be in Wednesday's paper, so that might help too. I've never raised money in this way for a charitable cause. I've always just organized a concert or haunted house, and watched the money quickly roll in. With asking for donations over a long period of time, the money comes in much slower. This causes my excitement to come at a different pace than I am used to. It's a unique experience to me so far, and it's also pretty fun.

Thanks for doing this, Jeff, and Cedar Fair. Not only is it helping the kids, but I think it is giving me a better outlook in life as well. I started participating in this because of the coaster marathon, but once I got over the excitement of that, the unselfishness of it all came to play. I am excited to raise money for a good cause that I believe in. It makes me feel good. :)

I'm glad you're getting the word out for Kings Island. CP already has more sign-ups than last year, but it's going to take some local pushing in the other markets by anyone who can help. If you've signed up, again I'll say, definitely solicit donations, but see if you can recruit people for the team!

Travis, you should post a link to your article when it goes on the paper's site. I'm sure there's a lot of people here that would like to read it.

Hi

LostKause's avatar

Sure thing. Just remember that it's not a TIME magazine article. It's just a small, county, weekly. :) It should be online by Thursday morning.

The only place I would be able to do any recruiting for participants is here. I have a hard time getting my family/friends to go to the parks with me at all, so they definitely aren't interested in marathoning a coaster. But they're being really generous in donations and I appreciate that for sure.

+1 for Dorney.

No progress as of yet, unfortunately, but I didn't spread the word until today (though I signed up yesterday) since I wanted to guarantee I could get the day off work before I actually told people I'd do it.

I considered doing it at Carowinds, but honestly I don't think I could ride Thunder Road all day after my last ride on it. It was pretty brutal in some spots (Can't wait till they get that all the way refurbed). I REALLY wish I could go ride Gemini all day.

I'd ride Steel Forceless all day, but I don't want to sleep for 12 hours.
