Chris Sawyer says RCT2 will feature improved AI, more flexibility

Posted | Contributed by Ride

Chris Sawyer, the developer that brought us Roller Coaster Tycoon, is delivering more depth to game play in sequel. He says that the focus was to make the gameplay deeper instead of making it prettier. In addition to new rides and coasters, the game will have better guest AI, scenario editing, mass tree removal, vertical scenery construction and other enhancements.

I still wish that he would improve the graphics so that you can at least ride your own coasters. I mean, it's not an impossible task, if he would just take his time in making the game, he would probably improve the graphics.

Bottom-line- He's rushing the whole thing.

or, he is just building it like all of his games. He isn't rushing at all. It is Chris Sawyer! You know, the maker of the tycoon games, duh.

~IMO, Vortex at PGA is the Stand-up Batman.

I only ask that the some new sound effects are added to the game. Like making wooden roller coasters sound like wooden roller coasters or making different wooshing sounds for the various steel coasters.

Take a good look at Six Flags Worlds of Adventure because in a few years the Sea World side will look exactly like it does, a zoo.

I can agree with Phyter taht the graphics will be nothing special but the thing I enjoy about RCT is more of the theming and park making. If I want to build coasters, I usally use No Limits as its a lot more advanced but as advanced as it is, I'll always like RCT the best :) At least untill CoasterGen is released :)
Its the strategy that does it for me. Well, except for the visual of puking peeps!

Do you think it will sell out the first day I live in a town of about 30,000 peaple and want to be able to buy it the first day.
The game will be awesome regardless, but I sure hope Chris improved the physics of the game, because the current physics are just plain bad.

Phyter - I'm listening...what's the name of your game?

TI-83 calculator games. I'll bet 10 bucks...

Please, no one complain about the graphics. The man give a perfectly good explanation in the interview. What's more important to you... A stunning game with crap gameplay, or a game with decent graphics and excellent gameplay?

How about a stunning game with the SAME gameplay as before? It sure was good last time, since millions of gamers can't be wrong...

I still don't see why there couldn't have been a decent facelift. How many people were there working on RCT2?

Maticus said: I had a coaster reach a top speed of 230mph in Corkscrew Follies.

Well, would anyone ride it? I can just hear it now: "Rollercoaster 1 looks too intense for me"......followed by....."this soda is really good value" (I think you'll agree that these comments are so realistic.....what's the name of this park - Fantasyland?)

This is great! the game sounds like it is really going to be much better then the first rct. really looking foward to it! can't wait!

Well, he DID improve the graphics in one way at least: better and more animations. Apparently there are more frames of animation in one coaster in RCT2 than in a whole park of RCT1. The ground types also "blend" together, and land doesn't seem sharply angled when raised, but more smooth. There are lots of visual touch-ups in the game.

I'm sure the game will be excellent and I can't wait for it. I do wish they'd dribble out some more "official" screen shots or something on at least a monthly basis. I'm dying here for more info!

RCT2 will definitely be a great game, and I'm not complaining, but I would like to see some flat rides go in to this game!

Well, that's the problem I think. If this is not a solo project I think it is close to being that. Instead they should have hired a dozen graphics people and spruced it up a bit. I'm happy with the new stuff, but the graphics make the game look VERY dated and should have been improved a bit too *** This post was edited by Coasterbuf on 6/29/2002. ***
The only thing I really want to see is a MAC version. please !!!!!

"Well, I wouldn't say I've been MISSING it, Bob."

jdancisin, I have a Mac too. There a program called Virtual PC that costs about $300 and allows you to play some windows games. I have it and RCT works just fine.

The game looks good -- but I have to agree that not updating the graphics on a 3 (?) year old engine is ludicrous. Sawyer, Infrogames, and everyone else developing the game knows full well that they can get by using the same quality of sprites and still sell millions of copies. Oh sure, there's nothing particularly WRONG with using sprites -- they do allow you to display MASSIVE amounts onscreen and still keep the system requirements to a minimum -- but they should have given the sprites a good graphical update. Render them with additional colors -- 24bit instead of 8bit. That wouldn't even affect most of todays computers and would SUBSTANTIALLY improve the game's appearance.

I agree with Sawyer's comment about how they could spend years making a 3D engine.. blah blah -- that's true. Turning RCT into a complete 3D world is a flawed idea mainly because it would either: (A)Wind up being too cartoony//fake looking or (B)Wind up having insane system requirements. Yes, it would have pushed back the release date until after Christmas if they were going to re-model all the sprites in the game. Would it have been worth it? Well, in terms of how nice the games looks.. yes. In terms of sales, no. And that is what it ultimately boils down to. This game is just one big expansion pack to RCT1. The only upgrades, in terms of the engine itself, is enhanced AI [and who knows how "enhanced" that really is] and the ability to build scenery vertically.

Will I buy the game? Yeah probably, because I still enjoy the game even though I don't necessarily agree with the choices the developers made. The graphics ARE dated -- but even RCT1 is still *fun*. The gameplay does make up for the lackluster graphics -- even though they really should have updated them. *** This post was edited by GandC on 6/30/2002. ***

When you say you can stack scenery i know you mean the abstract stuff but can you stack trees?

Im the #1 Canobie Lake Park Fan!!!These are my top 3 coasters:
1. S:RoS @ SFNE 2. Yankee Cannonball 3. Cyclone

Can you guys just whine a little bit more? I mean how picky can you get?! If a scenario editor, more rides/shops/coasters, better AI, ect.... doesn't please you, then I don't know what will. Graphics do not, I repeat do not make up a game!
