Cedar Point announces Shoot The Rapids for 2010

[Ed. note: The following is an unedited press release. -J]

Grab your paddles and climb aboard the newest river-ride adventure this side of the Appalachians! Shoot the Rapids, an all-new family water ride, will rise above Cedar Point’s rustic Frontier Trail when it makes a splash on Opening Day 2010.

During the 2,100-foot-long journey, adventurers will travel through a wooded area and around an illegal still used for brewing sweet-tasting elixir, all while encountering surprise water elements and special effects. Guests will navigate the waters aboard a 10-passenger boat. Riders will be seated in five rows of two and will be secured by individual over-the-head lap bars.

The excitement builds when the boats ascend one of two lift hills. The first and largest hill will be 85 feet tall and will drop riders down onto Millennium Island at a 45-degree angle. The second hill will be 49 feet tall and will end with a dramatic “shoot” through water rapids and rockwork.

Guests on the Frontier Trail can keep their feet planted on dry land and watch as riders complete their wet and wild trek down the final drop.

“Shoot the Rapids will instantly become a family favorite,” said John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “Our guests wanted another option to cool off on warm summer days. We listened, and Shoot the Rapids will deliver the perfect combination of refreshment, thrills and new memories at Cedar Point.”

Shoot the Rapids will cost more than $10.5 million to build and will be the most expensive water ride ever built at Cedar Point. It will have a capacity of approximately 1,200 riders per hour. The ride will last three minutes. A rider height requirement has not yet been determined and will be released at a later date. The ride was designed and manufactured by IntaRide LLC of Glen Burnie, Md., the same company that built the Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force roller coasters and the Thunder Canyon river-rafting ride.

The same place you pick up a Flash Pass.

Remind me to do that next time I'm there. :)

So you got messed with a little bit. If you didn't buy in, then you wouldn't be disappointed.

The moral of the story is... don't be a tool and you'll never have to worry about being put in a toolbox! ;)

Being somewhat privy to the information myself, I didn't "buy in." But still, I'm disappointed.

As for the tool thing, I'm sure I qualify in some other capacity.

OK, I did not read all pages, but to all who keep complaining about the same manufacturer in the park. Would you rather remove Millenium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Maverick? and I believe Wicked Twister but to lazy to look that one up right now. So they all came from the same manufacturer. I have had a wonderful time at the park because of every one of these rides. Why do you dislike them?

I know B & M and GCI and other companies make great rides as well. But you can only do so many. I have enjoyed every one of those rides. If CP keeps getting the ride styles they are getting from one company, so be it. Bring on another great ride from them.

I would like a B&M Floorless or Flyer. I would like a GCI Woodie. But I would rather enjoy what they have vs. b**** and moan about what they should have done, could have done, and other stuff.

Have a Great day and when next year comes around. Enjoy the ride, or enjoy the fact that others are in line for that instead of the line you are in. Either way, Enjoy the day!

Put yourself in the shoes of an enthusiast who doesn't have an inside connection to the park.

That would be me---and I think this is a great addition. If anything, it looks like it'll be a little "too wet". But, I'll reserve judgement on that until after I get a spin or two on it.

Perhaps I'm not sufficiently "an enthusiast", but I look for a lot more than a big pile of rolly-coasters at parks I visit.

But where's the freakin' NASCAR tie in? ;)

I think the problem with some of the disappointment is because this was the third announcement from the chain of new rides for next year, and is basically the smallest and least costly of the three. I wonder why they couldn't change the order of the announcements to be less anti-climactic. And to flip what some of you may be thinking, would it really hurt the GP in Virginia to find out about their new coaster 2 weeks later than they did?

On the other hand, as a ride in itself, and not compared to a 300-foot coaster, this looks like a pretty awesome fun ride. An 85- foot drop on a flume is no pimple. And 2100 feet is huge for a flume. We'll have to wait and see what the additional effects are going to be.

Like other people asked, I wonder what will become of PWE. I remember going way back when the ride was totally off by itself and you could imagine yourself in another place and time. Now there is so much interaction and proximity to other rides, it's just another boat ride in a circle.

I must have missed where that was going on. I don't see any of that here.

Oh and one other thought...since the decade began with an Intamin and we are ending the decade with an Intamin...Dick can we move on to some of the other unique ride products available out there now?? Gravity Group comes to mind....just saying. Thanks.

Wasn't a complaint really.

Someone complained that they started the decade with an Intamin ride and ended it with an Intamin ride. Maybe someone should give them GG's phone number - kind of response.

Yeah, we get it. 17 roller coasters isn't enough. It makes me glad to be in an area with a mid-sized park where we get excited over the 2 smaller coasters and multi-lane racing water park slide that Six Flags gave us in the last 3 years.

Looks like we have to call a whole car-carrier full of Waaahmubalances today.

Isn't complaining about the complaining just compounding the complaining and making the complaining worse?

Uh, that would be me. Relax, it is an OPINION and that is what forums are about, are they not?? Or must I be a minion and go with what everyone else agrees upon or kiss the behind of Cedar Fair folk? At 40 years old I think I prefer to exist with my own beliefs, thoughts and opinions. As well, I am THRILLED that Dick and Jack finally agreed to build something at the Point that has been on guest surveys year after year after year. It has been a delayed project and it was time it got done.

Lastly, it would be nice to see other cool manufacturer's products at the Point, it wasn't a "build more coasters" comment even though I used GG as an example. There are many AMAZING flat rides, dark rides, etc out on the market...if a certain someone would just bend out of his conservatism a little.

I'm not complaining at all. I just think it's funny/sad that if you have a smaller to midsize park the majority of the GP and enthusiasts who are fans of the park seem to get excited more and complain less about the new addition. The only complaints SFStL fans have been giving lately is that we are pretty much chomping at the bit to get a hyper.

The big final drop on the log flume at SFStL is somewhere between 45 and 50 feet I believe. So having that PLUS a huge 85 foot drop seems to me to be maybe not EPIC like PP but a hell of a lot more exciting than most flumes in existence right now.

Shut up shut up all of you complainers!

You had to know that this announcement wouldn't involve a new coaster.

The hype? That's our fault. CP's marketing department put the teasers out, and the only thing they were hoping for at that point was to keep everyone talking, which we did. Good or bad, wrong or right, just talk. Best publicity you can get.

I have a reminder for all coaster-only enthusiasts. Cedar Point over the years had been very, very good to you. Nowhere alse can you find the total package of variety and thrills. So please don't worry, in time they'll get back around to you. Really. And after a couple of "off" years, maybe it'll really be worth the wait!

I'll repeat myself - this ride is exactly what Cedar Point needs right now. They claim this is high on customer's wish lists, and I'm sure they're right.

And if you look at the structure of the lifts in the animation, it has tubular rails and a chain. So as someone pointed out earlier this is kind of a flume-coaster hybrid.

Only if you're compounding the complaints by complaining about the complaints about the complaints. ;)

The hype was the fault of their marketing. They took people in a completely different direction than a flume ride.

I wouldn't say that Cedar Point is the only place where you can find the total package of variety and thrills. There are other parks that offer just as much coaster-wise. For example, Six Flags Great Adventure has just as many great coasters IMO. All they need are some good flats. That park looks better too.

Huh? We must have been reading differnet blogs and announcements. In their recent blog posting they eliminated manufacturers...most of which were coaster manufacturers.

By people he must mean enthusiasts who thought believing really hard in something different would yield a different result.
