Cedar Point announces Shoot The Rapids for 2010

[Ed. note: The following is an unedited press release. -J]

Grab your paddles and climb aboard the newest river-ride adventure this side of the Appalachians! Shoot the Rapids, an all-new family water ride, will rise above Cedar Point’s rustic Frontier Trail when it makes a splash on Opening Day 2010.

During the 2,100-foot-long journey, adventurers will travel through a wooded area and around an illegal still used for brewing sweet-tasting elixir, all while encountering surprise water elements and special effects. Guests will navigate the waters aboard a 10-passenger boat. Riders will be seated in five rows of two and will be secured by individual over-the-head lap bars.

The excitement builds when the boats ascend one of two lift hills. The first and largest hill will be 85 feet tall and will drop riders down onto Millennium Island at a 45-degree angle. The second hill will be 49 feet tall and will end with a dramatic “shoot” through water rapids and rockwork.

Guests on the Frontier Trail can keep their feet planted on dry land and watch as riders complete their wet and wild trek down the final drop.

“Shoot the Rapids will instantly become a family favorite,” said John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “Our guests wanted another option to cool off on warm summer days. We listened, and Shoot the Rapids will deliver the perfect combination of refreshment, thrills and new memories at Cedar Point.”

Shoot the Rapids will cost more than $10.5 million to build and will be the most expensive water ride ever built at Cedar Point. It will have a capacity of approximately 1,200 riders per hour. The ride will last three minutes. A rider height requirement has not yet been determined and will be released at a later date. The ride was designed and manufactured by IntaRide LLC of Glen Burnie, Md., the same company that built the Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force roller coasters and the Thunder Canyon river-rafting ride.

What about "Best New Ride?"

It IS possible, however slim the chance may be.

Every fews years they add a coaster and this seamed tobe the year for that.

LostKause, it IS the 3rd water attraction in the park currently and it IS the 3rd flume style attraction the park has ever had.

As for full-time management who have a superstition about 3's, I said this isn't BS but BS believes in the power of 3. Even I in my sheer BRILLIANCE couldn't have dreamt this up on my own : )

I'm thinking that they've got something bigger & badder for 2011.

You guys remember that they intro'd MaXair and Skyhawk in '05 and '06, then hit us with Marverick in '07.

Maybe this is part of the cycle.

There is only a "cycle" if you conveniently look at the years since Magnum opened. I hate to break this to you but Cedar Point doesn't coasters (or any ride) based on these so-called cycles. No park president worth a dime will say, "It's been two years since our last coaster, next year we MUST build a new one!"

Anyone who honestly thinks that shows zero understanding of how a business is run.

Sorry enthusiasts, this ride will get the general public excited and bring back nostalgia for folks that grew up riding WWL.

I hate to break it to you, the general public is who matters, enthusiasts make up a small percentage of guests. Basically enthusiasts need the parks more than the parks need enthusiasts.

The marketing department (gasp!) heavily marketed a new ride. Sorry it disappointed you.

This can't be that easy!

I am neither excited nor am I disappointed with this ride. Feel free to attack me for voicing my opinion.

Well, the reception on the CP facebook page shows a significant amount of disappointment in this announcement. I personally didn't follow the blog regularly, but the bits I did catch sure made it seem like it was a big deal (the fact that they announced when it would be announced implies that the announcement will be worth the wait) and also that it would likely be a coaster. If not, what was the Gee.See. Eye. blog post about?

So, yea. CP has quite a few disappointed folks, unfortunately. Regardless of whether you think the poor reception is merely because enthusiast are spoiled crybabies (cue Jeff), the fact remains that a lot of people are disappointed.

Then again, the demographic that the ride is aimed at probably don't read the CP blog, and frankly, probably aren't aware that there was even an announcement... They'll find out next spring when the TV ads begin, most likely. So who was the count-down and hype for, if not enthusiasts? And if so, why lead them down the path thinking it's some big amazing news, then announce a family flume ride?

Regardless of all that, I'm sure they did they homework in deciding to build this ride, and I'm sure there will be plenty of folks happy to ride it. All in all, I think it'll be a fairly successful ride for them.

But one thing I'm wondering is... Why put this new water ride right next to the other 2 water rides? Why not spread them out a little?

3rd Ever?

Mill Race 1963 to 1993

Shoot the Rapids 1967 to 1981

White Water Landing 1982 to 2005

Shoot the Rapids 2010 to ?

Plus I forget which thread it was in. But, someone was saying there was another Shoot the Rapids before the 1967 installation. He said it opened in the 30's

The Wetness factor is decently important here. Too wet and you lose ridership for the bookends of your season. 10.5 million seemed like a lot to me. Realistically what was going to be a better use of the land? Should fit in pretty well with the area of the park.

And have wet people in bathing suits all over the park? That area is the only place people are allowed to walk around without shoes and shirts. It's much better to keep it all in the same area. I'm sure someone else on here can explain it better than I can.

Well, they used to have the Mill Race up front, and I don't recall there being any problems about having wet people there.

Does he now? Did he tell you that? I worked under the guy TWO of the three seasons that I worked at Cedar Point, spoke with him on a regular basis, and he never, ever mentioned the magical powers that the number three have to me, even when he was off the clock, speaking to me while his children were on the attractions that I was operating.

Where did you get that info?

Even I in my sheer BRILLIANCE couldn't have dreamt this up on my own : )

That proves that you are delusional.

Thanks. I really appreciate that. All I need now is 2 more points and I'll be supreme awesomest CoasterBuzz poster ever! ;)

I really hope that they turn down the wet on this ride. Not gettingwet was one reason that I liked WWL so much, after a hard days work atCamp Snoopy. Whoda-thunk that people would complain about a brand new ten million dollar ride?

Coming late into this discussion. I think this is a great addition to the park. If the nineties was the decade of new coaster development, the 2000's are the decade of water parks and water rides. This will be an extremely popular attraction that will see huge lines all summer long.

Certain victory.

mlnem4s said:
Oh and one other thought...since the decade began with an Intamin and we are ending the decade with an Intamin...Dick can we move on to some of the other unique ride products available out there now?? Gravity Group comes to mind....just saying. Thanks.

If it wasn't for the Intamin Pre-fab i would completely agree with you. There is nothing, I repeat nothing i would rather see CP add for myself than a ride like El Toro. They already have the worlds #1 steel IMO with MF and with one of those they could have the worlds #1 wooden too!

I'm surprised that this many of you are shocked that its not going to be a world class roller coaster.

1. CP promised us they would replace WWL.

2. Even with a struggline ecomony, CF is already investing huge amounts into both Intimidators. Didn't Dick Kinzel say something like 50 million will be spent at the parks for 2010? well true or not, there is not much money left!

3. The footprint for the ride is small and very little construction has been started when compared to a ride like I305.

I had a feeling it was going to be a flume ride ( or at the very least an inexpensive ride) like this all along, and nothing lead me to change my mind as you can see.

And as for the idea, I think it was a very good business decision on CP's part. A flume is one of those rides that every park just has to have. "Its like saying that every american ballpark has to have an american flag." ( i got that quote from one of those old discovery channel shows that dealt with parks) Flumes are just one of a very small group of rides that everyone can enjoy. They can definitlely keep famililes coming back, and certainly do a much better job of it than a 25 million dollar Strata coaster does. not that a 25 million dollar strata coaster is a bad ride!!

Yes i would rather this be an intamin prefab like El Toro don't get me wrong. But that wouldn't be a smart decision on CP's part when their lacking an essential ingrediant in their park, and there was never any evidence that came up that would lead one to believe this ride was going to be anything else IMO.

-Eric: Major Parks: SFNE(homepark), SFA,SFGADV,CP,BGE,BGA,Kennywood, and Sea World: Track record 65 different coasters ridden #1 is Millennium Force #2 is El Toro and than there are all the others

The thing I find interesting is they moved this back from last year to this year. Which means the next addition, whatever it may be, could be next year unless all capital projects for cedar point were pushed back a year.

mwatts has good memory and if everyone recalls Dick was talking about a major flume ride for the Point prior to that....it really was not a secret at all. Will the Point get another coaster soon? Yes, absolutely...just a matter of time.

Looks fabulous. Anyone who couldn't suss out what sort of ride this would be a long time ago is...not very good at sussing things out.
