Cedar Point and Knott's removing VertiGo

Posted | Contributed by wkyc.com

Still unsure of what caused one of VertiGo's three towers to fall, Cedar Point and Knott's Berry Farm are getting rid of VertiGo. The press release indicates that the relationship with S&S Power, the ride's manufacturer, is still "strong."

I heard a rumor from a Dippin' Dot guy that was working at Baskin Robbins in the off-season that CP was going to sell the remaining two towers to SFWOA. They were going to paint one pole red, the other blue, name it Superman: Ultimate Mistake and use it to catapult people into the lagoon.

Okay, I'm done now.

It's a pretty lame excuse to say people won't ride the ride now, especially when the accident involved no injuries at all. There have been many other rides with technical failures or accidents, and people still ride them. If SFMM doesn't remove Thrill Shot, which they more than likely won't, then this whole situation might get real interesting.

Do think that this means Cedar Fair won't be doing business with S&S anymore?

Well, I still think this is a big shock, after all, this did happen in the Off Season, and thankfully no one was Hurt, Also it could well be this happened because of a structual problem(Most likely solution) after all,the SFMM version has been fine, and so has the one at Knotts.

Also, I think they are being silly when they say No One will never ride it again because of this incident, I am sure that there would still be plenty of people on here still willing to ride one(Me included)

I also hope SFMM does not remove their version, I was hoping to Ride one of these when I go to SFMM this year in June.

please read carefully next time...
You know, I've never even thought of visiting the GTTP news section....actually, I was oblivious that there was one...

"By the way, regardless of what was said at Winter Solace, I have it on good authority that CP was instructed to remove the cables for the winter, just as they were for Power Tower."

No, that's exactly what Stan said, was that it was standard practice to remove the cables as Cedar Point did. But that's where the oversight in the engineering was. Since the cart acted like an anchor, they didn't figure in any of the other factors for when the cart might not be attached is what it sounded like.

Well, atleast I (along with Red Garter Rob) was the last rider of Vertigo! I wonder if I still have the tickets.... hmmm... Rob do you still have yours??

Wasn't the one in Cedar Point the prototype? Or am I mistaken?

So let the CP bashing begin. Then let the CP praising begin. Everyone seems to have it "in good authority" that the know what really happened.

CP ran it under "unsafe conditions". Give that quote from Winston.

SFMM will take theirs down, no wait keep it up. Let the park speak for itself.

The cables are the reason it fell, no wait, the tower was cracked, no wait, wasn't all three towers that fell?

The Sandusky Register quotes Barry Vickery, an engineer from University of Western Ontario, who did the study for S&S. He said the cause was "vortex shredding". CP's study is still under investigation.

Yet petty enthusiasts with want to bad mouth the competition. Let the SPECULATION RUN RAMPANT!

Its a pity no one cares about facts anymore. We can't wait for the reports, so we'll make some stuff up to badmouth or protect the park(s) involved. What a sad day for true amusement park and coaster enthusiasts.

And that my friends is the post of the day.

ROLLERCOASTERS....BETTER THAN OXYGEN BABY!!!!!!

I found Vertigo to be an amazing ride (unlike some of the others on here). I got probably 5 or 6 rides in on CP's version, and 4 on SFMM's version.

I never once did the 'gentle' mode where you just sit there so perhaps that is why I enjoy it so much. Every single ride I got on it freaked me out. I am sad to see it go.

-Sean (who doesn't think it was a crummy ride at all)

Okay, first of all like half of you guys are all retarded... okay VertiGo, HAD 3 towers, 1 fell, that means 2 are standing... (3-1=2) Disreguarding the fact that the cables were off CP still ran the ride in high wind conditions. Which may have played a part in adding extra stress on the towers. Of course we can thank "Big Papa" for that judgement call. So my blame still rest on CP, and I hope SFMM will continue to run such a great ride :)!

Sean, glad to hear you never tried the "family" version...;)

CF obviously has decided that it's not worth the risk to keep up KBF's. SF will decide for themselves...I guess that's kinda what Park1Arm said...hmmm. I hope it's up at CoasterCon XXV, 'cause I haven't had the opportunity yet. I would like to try it once, although I can't see doing the "upright" way. If it had anything to do with the cold, CF may be "jumping the gun", but better safe than sorry I guess. If SFMM has flawless operation, maybe CF will regret their decision, but hindsight ALWAYS has the best view....

Still wondering why Dave keeps all his feelings inside, tell us how you REALLY feel about VertiGo...;)

Honestly, I don't know. However I was made to undertstand that Magic Mountain got the tower that stood at the S&S facilities. But that could be wrong.

CP had the prototype, not SFMM.

May I suggest a Skyscraper or Zamperla Turbo Force in the place of those two rides? They certainly are the two scariest rides I've ever been on.

The word "definitely" is definitely the most misspelled word on the buzz.
First off... Yes CP had the prototype towers. I got this from Wayne and Stan from S&S themselves while I was doing my VertiGo coverage (check GTTP for it)

Now.. Rollocoast... Yes.. I have mine.. I went and found it in the stack of 82 that I have.....

It's gonna go on my wall along with a few very select park items I have...

Thanks Corey..

You know.. looking back.. that last rides ALMOST makes up for everything that happened after the park was closed.. You know what I'm talking about..
