Cedar Point and Knott's removing VertiGo

Posted | Contributed by wkyc.com

Still unsure of what caused one of VertiGo's three towers to fall, Cedar Point and Knott's Berry Farm are getting rid of VertiGo. The press release indicates that the relationship with S&S Power, the ride's manufacturer, is still "strong."

I wouldn't count on SFMM keeping thiers either.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if SFMM KEPT theirs, they actually know how to run theirs ;)...

Well SFMM is a year-round park. CP is a seasonal park, and VertiGo wasn't in operation when it collapsed. Also, the daily inspections that take place weren't being done during the off-season as well. It's not a matter of knowing how to run it, because CP doesn't run it during the off-season!

Hopefully they'll bring it back in some other way/shape/form.

Hey smart guy, I have reason to believe the tower was weakend due to operation under "UNSAFE CONDITIONS" as deemed by S&S of Logan Utah. Being a Ex-Ride op, this is not a rumor but a fact.

I'm not even going to comment on the alleged credibility of ride ops, but in any case, I for one wasn't that impressed with the ride. It was too gentle, I thought.

By the way, regardless of what was said at Winter Solace, I have it on good authority that CP was instructed to remove the cables for the winter, just as they were for Power Tower. It's still no one's "fault," but the result is still that the rides are going away.

Perhaps the ride was too gentle due to the snugness of your harness, or the fact that it took two ride opps to balance you out, yea Jeff, I was there, I know... :)

It's not a matter of HOW a park runs it. Like Jeff said.. CP was told by S&S it was ok to remove the cables.

Think if you're a park owner. There are 3 rides int eh world. One of them has failed. End of sentance. And the other one is being taken out for safety's sake. Are YOU gonna be the one ride open with the bad press that can be levied against you.

Just wait till the rest of the test results come out people. People might be a little shocked.

How can you blame CP if they were told by S&S to remove the cables???

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day where a state of the art ride would be torn down after it's been open for less than a year, what horrible news :-(.
You messed up the news title. ONE tower fell, NOT three!

It was a crummy ride to begin with. I wonder to what degree the tower collapse is a convenient excuse to yank an upcharge ride that won't pay for itself.

It would work as a P-O-P ride, but it doesn't have the capacity. So it gets stuck as an upcharge, but an upcharge that people don't want to pay for.

Too complicated, cycle too long, not exciting enough, takes up too much real estate, falls down too readily.

MRider, assuming (en arguendo) everything you say is true, then why would Knott's take thier's out as well? KBF is also a year round park just like SFMM. Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Doesnt much matter to me as I doubt I'd have ridden it anyway. (Unless greatly discounted).

I might have been more sympathetic if the ride had been included with admission. Regardless, those types of bungee rides oddly seem out of place at Cedar Point - fine for Myrtle Beach or something like that, but not at Cedar Point (or any other amusement park for that matter).
I can understand why it is that they are removing it, but I really am dissappointed since my last visit to the point was in late June. I was really looking forward to trying it this year.

Hmm... I wish i could have rode, but, oh well...

So back to the question at hand: What will Knotts put in that spot? How about a Vekoma Mad House, designed to look like a Saloon or Motel? Or a Western-themed Sally Dark ride? A Frisbee themed to a 10-gallon hat? A Crazy Mouse called The Rustler w/ buffalo & cow-shaped cars? So many possibilities....

I think they should stay until they figure out why they fell, it could have just been a tiny mistake in that one tower at CP. I think they should just keep them closed until they figure out what happened.

This is the thing. They did figure out what happened. It could be prevented. But whatever. Cedar Fair is just being stupid IMO.
