I hope all the employees at Carowinds gather around, read your letter out loud, and then laugh until they piss their pants. I hope they make photocopies and post them in the office restrooms. Your cause is worthy but your effort is laughable.

It was just there, which is why I don't see this as a big deal. If you are so obsessed with the historical part, the double decker carousel and the train might be something to debate about, but those were removed awhile ago, before Paramount. Most of the "historical" attractions were removed before Paramount.

I have to disagree with you there. I Thought the Boat added a lot of atmosphere to -Plantation Square-. Particularly when you could see the it's Two big Stacks drifting around behind the trees, or hear it's sharp Whistle off in the distance. It also created much more of a "working" feel to the park's river, which other wise looks like nothing more that a disgusting breeding pond for bugs.

And while Paramount didn't remove the Carowinds & Carolina Railroad, White Lightnin', The Double Decker Carousel, The Oaken Bucket, The Surfer, The Witch Doctor, The Skyway, The Wagon Wheel, The Waltzer, The Flying Dutchman, The Hillbilly Jalopies, or the Speedway, they certainly didn't help by removing the Boat. I Decided to be thankful that they were going to leave it on display, but it seems that this is just a case of "We don't want to deal with it".

Correction (just being picky here). Paramount did remove the Speedway for the Vortex.

When Carowinds was built into the mid 80s, it was one of the best themed thrill parks in existance. With tons of special touches full of Carolina charm. When Keco took over, the park became highly neglected and although Paramount has made many improvements, they have also ripped out every ounce of the Carolina charm.

With the loss of the sternwheeler, the park now becomes Parawinds, as there is virtually nothing left of the parks original theming. The sternwheeler was the last of the transportation rides to be removed and one of many family type rides that no longer exist in the park. While Paramount tries to say they are family parks, they actually have very few "disney" type rides that an entire family can ride together regardless of age, height or nausea tolerance.

The sternwheeler was one of those few rides they had in that category.

Sorry to say this, but why the big deal? It didn't give anybody anything to do anymore cause it hasn't run in the last 6 or 7 years that I've visited the park, it was just a place to sit. I wish they would have kept it to an extent, but it really was just sitting there doing nothing.

I think Carowinds is much much better than it was in the mid ninetys, and is on the right path. They are retheming/repainting/refurbing most of the park, give them time, and I'm sure it will be a great family park.

"I feel so delightfully White Trash..."

Paramount has removed the following rides: Monorail,Wild Bull,Whirling Dervish, Kiddie Sky Tower, Powerstation Play area, Kiddie Rapids(still there but closed), Black Beard's Revenge,Smurf Island play elements.

They did not remove the Speedway for Vortex. That happened the season before Paramount took over. They took over late 1992. The Speedway closed late 1991.

In place of the rides listed above we got, in order that I listed above, Power Station, Top Gun, Pay per experience attaction, nothing, nothing, nothing, Super Saturator,Scarowinds area now Stealth

I was just copied this letter from my top-secret, well-informed sources:

Dear Chris Beeson (real name) Lee Coaster (internet name),

I have been commissioned to respond to your letter as the Park Manager has crawled under his desk, assumed the fetal position and began to suck his thumb. I called his name a couple times and then he started rocking back and forth too. Anyway, that's beside the point.

We were WRONG, Lee Coaster. So very, very wrong. It only took one look at your web page to know. The forums, the posts...it was like the touch of the Lord himself.

Why, oh why didn't we check with you first? How could we not have known that you are the best possible source of information of our history? Never mind the people who have, like, worked at the park before you were an binge-drinking twinkle in Dad's eye and all. We have no purpose. There's no point in our existence. Why are we here?

Anyway, you'll be proud to know that we've come to our senses. I just told the folks in the planning department to go get my big belt and come see me in my office. After we, uh, discuss a few things, we're gong back to basics. Just wait 'till you see us next year.

You'll be glad to know we're relocating the Carolina Queen fairly close to the front gate, bringing back the Oaken Bucket and planting more flowers than any park in North America. All we need to do is smack down that pesky little Top Gun coaster and voila! An end to any and all space issues.

As for Stealth...well, it's not really themed to Carolina very well, but we kept our receipt and told PGA they could their little dutch-built Yankee coaster.

Best of all, we're gonna have a 'Back to Basics' parade every evening at 6 PM in your honor. Everyone who's stunned, thrilled and amazed that we don't have a 'used' flying coaster will get a chance to thank YOU, the genius behind our new direction and focus personally.

We couldn't possibly thank you enough. Bless you, Lee Coaster.

Sincerely,

The president and owner of the whole park

Your right there. During my Six 2002 trips, I can only recall it running on one of my visits. And evan when they did run it, it was never more that Three or Four Hours at a time.

I Think the boat gave the park a unique attraction, but now were just a normal run-of-the mill place. I'm Hoping the park will do the extrodinary and sell it to another location that has use for paddle wheelers, but knowing the way they think, they'll probably rip it apart and pile it up to use as fire wood, like they did with it's dock and the buildings on Smurf Island.

Well, then kinda had to tear those down so they could put the new ride there...
Just found out via the Carowinds Forums that the movers cracked the ship's hull during the move. (In a similar fashion to what happened with Disney's second paddlewheeler at the Magic Kingdom, the long-gone Admiral Joe Fowler.)

Seems the ship will be completely destroyed, because who wants a boat that is going to sink.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Go to this website, it is true though... I don't know if that is the only hole...

Well, you are right that Paramount took over in late 1992. I was at the Vortex press day announcement in August 1992 and it was already known then that Paramount was coming in.

But....back to the beloved Sternwheeler. I am going to try and find out this week how it was removed and if it is still salvageable for another park to possibly use.

CoasterPreservation, please tell me you are kidding. Please tell me you just did not write a letter to God about a boat.
Better yet, please tell me that you didn't pray that "she" would "return to us soon".

I mean, are you really that cracked?

You need to check your memory there Harry Traver. I was at the press and A.C.E. opening for Vortex and it was early 1992 . The first Paramount ride was Day Of Thunder in 1993 followed by Wayne's World in 94. If Paramount had already bought the chain then Vortex would not have gotten the name it got. It would have been Paramount themed.

Vortex was new for 92.

And, the Vortex name was actually around well before Paramount. They first used it on Kings Island's Arrow Mega Looper in 1987.

Is that why *every* Paramount park has a coaster named Vortex?? Clearly, Vortex *is* a "Paramount theme."

Regardeless, I don't think anyone was arguing that Vortex wasn't built in '92 (as clearly it was).

Ahhhhh....I remember that jarring jerk when that great boat would hit a curve in it's underwater track...I nearly dropped my fake Mint Julep.

All of Carolina's history and flavor in the park 'riding' on the existence of a fake sternwheeler?

Hmmmmmm.

Say farewell to the 'McRib sandwich' of the Carowinds Park and think of her fondly next season, as you fly, dip and soar over her hollowed, sacred ground.

God Bless
May she rest in Pieces.

The only ground that was hollowed was where they poured the footers for Stealth.
