Breakout year for SF

That's what I'm having a hard time with. How can you say that Shapiro is doing a good job? Maybe this will be a turning point for Six Flags... maybe we'll all be whistling a different tune come next September. But in the meantime, can't we wait to see how all this turns out before annointing the guy with heaps of praise? Right now he has ideas and plans, and none of those ideas and plans have resulted in anything aside from corporate sponsorships.

As I said earlier, I'm not completely averse to them. If Papa Johns comes in an sells a better pizza than what the park was selling last year, I'm all for it. I'm a fan of Mom & Pop operations but if you can't have that, at least have something of quality- which is what Papa Johns seems to be. But sponsors for everything? That's taking it all a little too far. Is Waste Management going to sponsor the garbage cans? American Standard the toilets?

Here is whats planned for Gradv for the 07 season;

Which puts him approximately 20 light years ahead of the old guys. ;)

Seriously though, you gotta have a plan if you intend to execute. He's on the right track and I have no doubt about that at all.

Well from Ajrides' link, some of these certainly give me a coasterboner -

"There are many new employee incentives."

Interesting, I hope we hear exactly what they are.

"2008 will include a focus on Hurricane Harbor"

Good.

"They are considering a major Dark Ride in the future."

omgomgomgomgomg!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111 yay!

"There is a MAJOR focus on ride uptime. They are serious about all trains running when possible with better reliability."

Yee haw - if it works of course.

"The Q-bot Rental building is HUGE and will have an express lane for those that already know how to use it to make the wait shorter."

This is good. The whole process is insanely slow.

Sounds like good stuff to me, now let's see the execution.

I'm not questioning the guy's ability to plan. If you want to make something happen, you HAVE to plan. But there are two things that lead to improvements: Plans and execution. If you don't have the first, you can't have the second, and if the second gets messed up, you might as well not having wasted time on the first.

Okay, so Shapiro has plans. So far, so good- that DOES put him miles ahead of Burke & Co. But what he does with those plans is going to make all the difference in the world, and until I see everything executed, I'm not going to get all excited over anything and I'm going to remain cautious about visiting Six Flags parks.

I will add that a darkride for Great Adventure would be a very good thing... here's hoping they put forth a little creativity instead of going with something like Thomas the Tank Engine. I'd love to see something themed to the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote.

The problem with Shapiro is that he keeps on switching his mind like anything. Synder and him decided to put SFMM up for sale. They changed there minds. There are still people that think the park is going to close soon.

When those people finally figure it's not closing, they will be mad at Six Flags Magic Mountain, and not come back. He was so into shows for the 2006 seasons, and that proved wrong. Maybe, this year he will actually worry about the rides compared to the shows. Declaring no Goliaths shows a lot. Than, he changes his mind to other roller coasters.

How many people that are not enthusiasts (gp) know how much Goliath costs compared to a Intamin AG LIM shuttle. That's a huge difference. The gp don't care about prices. They think that they probably cost the same amount of money (V2 vs Goliath). No more roller coasters???? He shouldn't speak so BOLDLY, and than change his mind. Get the plans ready and execute them. Who cares about talk?? We remember.

I'll make a bold prediction that Mark Shapiro (despite some annoying cross-marketing distractions from Dan Snyder) will make some HUGE strides with Six Flags within 2-3 years, both financially and creatively. His has more than just a plan, so far he's executing beyond what even I expected. If the immediate removal of Psyclone and Flashback can't convince people this guy is serious, nothing will.

Honestly, I just don't have the desire to visit SFMM anytime soon, well...because it's SFMM. But honestly, laugh if you want, but I have more faith in Shapiro to turn around this company, than I do in CF to keep up all it's recent acquisitions. It's not all talk at all. He's curbed the spending on expensive thrill rides that serve only as a temporary fix. He constantly visits each of the park to make sure they are following through with what he's asked. He's replaced GM's that he felt had squandered their opportunities. He's sold off dead weight parks to free up cash for his plan. And MY GOD, he's allowed SFMM to get rid of Psyclone and Flashback!

I certainly agree that he's got a long way to go towards restoring the good will of the people. But to hear him talk, he knows this already and that fact doesn't intimidate him in the least. In fact, it's his main motivation, well, other than his paycheck.

Yep, that's right, I'm a Shapiro fanboy and proud of it. To say he's hasn't stuck to any of his promises is not completely accurate.

^I totally agree, if anyone thought there was going to be major changes last year was fooling themselves. He also got rid of other dead weight at the parks by removing the free falls. Thats why I think he will have the parks running right by 2010. I also think he will stick to alot of the promisses that he has made for this season because he is not going to put his job and reputation on the line and not deliver
I saw changes at SFKK and Six Flags St. Louis that were VERY nice in 2006. Then again, I went to Six Flags America and was NOT impressed at all. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2007...

Did you ever think that maybe he is changing his mind on certain things because he is trying to get a feel for the business and figure out what works? I have seen your posts on here and on some other sites and it's safe to say you are just plain pissed off because the new SF regime isn't going to continue plopping down huge coaster after huge coaster.

Your self-indulgence in huge coasters is why you liked the Burke and co. era. On top of that, you really could care less that it is a publicly traded business with 2 plus billion in debt. Just keep building the big coasters, rack up debt, and keep going, right?

I get a kick out of people that watched the higher ups of a company totally screw up said company for years causing total hardship, and then expect a new higher up to make changes overnight.

If you think you can do better in a shorter amount of time, by all means, impress us with your business savvy.

Sick of listening to one-track minded fools. *** Edited 3/3/2007 11:14:51 AM UTC by Chitown***

I'm fine with having a certain amount of faith in Shapiro, I do, too, but justifying it by saying he'll do well or stick to his promises because his reputation and job are on the line is a bit crazy.

Couldn't you say that about anybody who runs a business?

I mean that's kinda like saying I think my favorite football team is going to win because they don't want to lose. *** Edited 3/3/2007 12:45:41 PM UTC by matt.***

I found this kind of intresting about what we are talking about on here:

What's next Sony TV's in the lines. UMM now that I think of it, it's a good idea. I would love to watch tv in the lines. They should get Sony to sponsor them to.

SFA actualy did improve in 06. WO and TF:TFS lines moved at a pretty good clip. On top of that I heard WO was the most reliable roller coaster SF owned during the 06 season. SFA isn't great and they still have problems but there getting better.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Right.

Christ, even *I* had to go to rcdb to figure out what TF:TFS was. Talk about obscure acronyms.
Ajrides, are you on SF's effin payroll or something? I mean, come on. What's with you posting all of these news articles?

Would you consider yourself a SF tool?

I do not work for SF or any other park. I thought this was a discussion about SF 07 season and everything I have posted is about just that. I thought some were intresting like the one about Gradv and SFMM. If you don't think they add to the discussion, than this thread is done.

Shapiro promised there would be major changes last year and he didn't deliver? You're saying he basically gets a free pass because it was his first year on the job? No one is foolish for believing him... the only fools are the people like you that for some reason feel the guy can do no wrong.

The weird acronyms and the endless links to SF articles being posted? You ARE a Six Flags tool. Face reality.

Ajrides, if the discussion is that you seem to be some kind of paid representative for SF, then you are right, The propaganda and free press for SF that you keep providing does add to the discussion.
