Avatar at PKI not considered a coaster?

HOWEVER, the Intamin Half-Pipe coaster is vaguely similar to the overall style, so some may argue that if Avatar isn't a coaster, why is the Intamin Half-Pipe considered a coaster? The answer is: Ida know... because it's much bigger? Because it's manufacture is Intamin?

Halfpipes are launched. So are impulse coasters. They use LIM along the track to boost the train. The Discos, Skaters, and Rockin' Tugs all have motors in the cars themselves to make it move.

Prowler. Opens May,2 2009.

I have a vested interest in considering Avatar a coaster since I designed the station and foundations, but that aside, I would have a hard time considering it a coaster. I didn't count the Dizzy Disk at Dollywood to be a coaster, so I wouldn't count this either. They're they same ride with a hump on the KI version!

Speaking of Avatar, I would like to hear what some of you who have ridden it thought of the ride! Every time I was there early in the season for work, the line was long and I didn't want to ride on company time. I haven't been back yet this year (despite 5 trips to Holiday World in the mean time!). As the season slowly ends, it's starting to bug me that I haven't ridden yet.

I rode it and loved it. I think it is a pretty intense ride for the kids. I was surprised at how much that ride spins.

Log flumes slide and float. They don't roll and coast. DUH!

I've ridden many where the logs rolled/coaster on coaster-like dips and drops. All of the Splash Mountain flumes have the drop into the Laughing Place were logs leave the tough AND water and roll on coaster type track.

And what is this at Mt Olympus:

Almost all (if not all) log flumes have wheels, right? In case there's not enough water in the trough for the log to "float".

Dudley's is just more *visible* in its coasting section... ;)

...I don't COUNT them, but I do have to RIDE the powered coasters. Kids need adults (or in this case, bigger kids) to show them the finer details of throwing your arms up and letting go...

So that's the reason we are going to run all over the greater Denver and Colorado Springs metropolitan areas, as part of a humanitarian effort? Sure...

That, my friend, is pure crap.

^If they'd just eliminate ALL the trough that goes back TOWARDS the park (shortening the duration of boredom from 8 minutes to 5), then DtA would be merely "somewhat boring, with a nice splashdown". As it is, DtA is the undisputed King of "why do I have to waste THIS much time to get a wet credit?"... ;)
Looking at the pics of DtA, I was wondering "Why do you ride in garbage cans..."

... and then I realized that the "boats" were themed to look like broken Greek columns.

"Yes... well... VICTORY IS MINE!"
So the ride zig zags around 8 minutes? They should have enclosed it and made it into a sort of old mill.
^^They Do look like garbage cans! LOL i didn't even notice that.

What about Kingda Ka? That ride has brakes on every hill so it is never really free to coast. *** Edited 8/26/2006 4:03:55 AM UTC by RavenTTD***

"Never really free to coast" is not the same as "it doesn't coast."

Swoosh, Underground does have a drop! There is a dip right before one of the lift hills (I believe the second one after the waterfall). It only "drops" about one foot, but compared to the rest of the ride, it is a drop. :) *** Edited 9/6/2006 8:57:45 PM UTC by Acoustic Viscosity***

I never noticed that DtA's "boats" looked like garbage cans. Makes sense- the ride is trash so why not ride in trash cans?

I'm not sure what could be done to improve the thing. Why the heck are the trough sections so damn slow? If the speed of the water could be increased, covering everything and adding some darkride elements would make it a decent experience, because shooting riders in the face with an open faucet isn't such a great idea.

Getting back to what Moosh said, some log flumes do have uphill sections so that does cloud things somewhat. Kennywood's flume has an uphill section and a dry turnaround after one of the drops.

^ And the Typhoon Sea Coaster at SFA has a drop and then an uphill section. I still don't consider the thing to be a rollercoaster, but more of a glorified log flume.

This debate could go on and on and back and forth, so why are we getting hung up on it again?

coastin' since 1985
