Any interesting news from No Coast Con?

Don't forget about IB fixing the light gun problem on Den of Thieves.
You will see Bubba in '03 but not until May or June. Subway has been mentioned but I have no official word on that as of right now. For those Chinese food lovers you may be in for a treat this year as well to go along with that newly renovated fountain.

Wood Rules!

I can tell you for a fact that Octoberfest Gardens will not transform into a "Bubba Gumps Shrimp Shop." Sean can back me up on that one.

It's close... but not exact.....

Also, during a game called "Ace Feud", there was a question to name the coaster clubs based on responses from 100 ACErs...#4 was CoasterBuzz, Behind Coaster Zombies, ACE, and GOCC.

What was really funny is the team who had the question couldn't think of Coasterbuzz, included Shaggy, Shivering Tim and Sean F!!!

I know! I wanted to yell "COASTERBUZZ" to the top of my lungs but I restrained myself. lol.

This was my first NCC and really enjoyed myself, although I doubt I will be attending another one unless they use a larger room and have more comfortable chairs. My back is still killing me from sitting so long.

Maybe they should have the conference in the morning and spend the rest of the day at Safari Land (which I visited for the first time.....weee!)

Not to say I didn't enjoy myself. The presentations and videos were awesome, especially the silent movies and the Kennywood and SFGA presentations which were just too hilarious. Of course seeing the Dragster promo on a large screen was VERY sweet.

It was great to catch up with friends and get away for the weekend. :-).

I am just sorry I didn't have the dough to win the bid on that Beast sign!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have already stated that they will have a larger room for next year...as for the seats, unfortunately that is all most hotels/conference centers have. We just need to remember to bring additional cushions. It wasn't my back that was sore...it was my backSIDE.. ;)

Ditto for the Beast sign, Lordy, that was sweet. But $600 was a little rich for my bloodstream, It's a great item and all, and the money goes to fund the museum, but I'd rather spend that money on a coaster trip. ;)

Didn't the sign go for $700? Nonetheless, that cash is my Winter Solace trip next month. I know I'm going to kick myself for a long time for not going higher than $300.

Please save you M:TR testimonials for the appropriate place.

Sorry, couldn't help myself on that one. :)

The Beast sign did go for $700 Scott. According to Carol Sanderson, it was the highest priced auction item sold in ACE's history.

Also there was a King Cobra instructional sign that hung in the station underneath the driver's booth. It was the one that instructed riders on how to place themselves in the restraints. It sold for $75 I think, to Charlie Jaques... the gentleman currently writing a historical KI book.

Shaggy

Scott, it is entirely possible it did go for $700, I just was in shock after it brought in more $$$ for the museum fund than did ALL of the rest of the auction items combined... :O

Don't forget about it also being the record holder for all auction items in the history of the club. That surprised the heck out of me.

Can anybody elaborate on this Royal Fountain makeover?

In Re; to Subway - the park already has their own sub shop on International Street. Unless that is to become the Chinese place to which Shaggy refers. Chinese in the Swiss building doesn't sound right though, but it did host Greek Chilli, so anything is fair game. (or do the buidlings go by their national names anymore)

I wonder, Shaggy said the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company wasn't going to Oktoberfest Gardens but we were real close. As I recall BGSC is a sit down restaurant in other places I have seen it, so perhaps it is going into the building named the Festhaus but lacks almost all Festhaus theming.

Brining a sit down restaurant back to the park has got to be a good thing.

BTW: The photos at pki.com of the Scooby construction look great, it looks so retro, like a classic style dark ride that has been retrofitted with guns. (Can I call them guns, they look like toy novelty flashlights?)

Unfortunately, I wasn't surprised at all. There have always been bargains at auctions at ACE events. I just wish I had more spare income to spend on some of the auction items. I guess ACErs spend most of their extra money on trips. I know I do.

Laugh your troubles away at Riverview, the world's largest amusement park.

Lets not forget about the intresting fella. The first time I'd ever seen him and yet I heard him say he knows more about coaster then others. And lets not forget the list of questions for each park......

I've never been there but will you ever.....?, I read in a book that your park......?, Well I have several questions......ah at least let me ask two......?

I feel sorry for all the the park reps. Was it just me or did SFGAM really not see him holding his hand up?

If you ask me it it shouldn't be called No Coaster Con, more like Coaster Comedy Con!

As a matter of fact, yes. Sean F and I were fortunate to get a walking tour of PKI and all it's off-season changes and construction last week. The fountains were our first stop. Basically the pedistals have been removed and the plumbing/electrical updated. The side walls to the fountain have been raised and re-enforced. The renovation required the sealing of the old fountain walls with a special protective coating and then larger wall molds built around them. New concrete was then poured in the molds as well as in the fountain base. The work is not complete, and the fountains are really just a shell right now. Apparently they discovered there was a ton of lights, and plumbing not working... so they are busy repairing it all. The pedistals are being overhauled and will be put back. Quite frankly, the park's goal is that the fountains repair work not be visible to the naked eye. Guests probably won't even notice it.

In Re; to Subway - the park already has their own sub shop on International Street. Unless that is to become the Chinese place to which Shaggy refers. The chinese resteraunt on International Street was demolished. So no Subway will be going there.

No, I said "I can tell you for a fact that Octoberfest Gardens will not transform into a "Bubba Gumps Shrimp Shop. It's close... but not exact....."

That statement was meant to be open ended and leading. Again without giving details..... Octoberfest Gardens will not be transforming into a BUBBA GUMPS SHRIMP SHOP.

I took a flurry of photos on my walking tour that I hope to post tonight. They include Scooby detail photos as well as a bunch of fun PKI in the winter shots. There was no experience quite as grand as standing in the middle of the International Fountains in freezing temperatures up to my ankles in snow. It was indeed a rare treat that I will cherish for a long time.

Scooby itself blew me away. I have ridden the PCW and PC versions so I thought I knew what to expect. But PKI's is twice as big and twice as elaborate. I was blown away by the Sally folks and the work they were doing. Their scenic artist is incredible, and we had the privelege of watching him work. Mark my words, Scooby WILL be the hit of the season. Guests will line up in droves for this thing.

Perhaps you need to understand that there were other issues at hand with the young man. I felt the park reps and most of the attendees were kind and understanding of the young man's special needs. I found nothing wrong with his enthusiasm. It was genuine and as welcome as anyone's.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to down anyone, we all have our own personality. It was just the questions, and not just his others asked goofy ones too. There aren't dumb questions, some just provide humor

*** This post was edited by TeuFelHund on 1/21/2003. ***

I was ok with said person asking questions, but some of them were outright silly. His chaperone should have set ground rules regarding him asking questions, such as having the chaperone approve the question first. When I was younger, that was what most parents did, whether or not the child was "special needs".

What put his questions from "interesting/humorous" to "ok...time to gag this kid" was his question of when would Kennywood re-reprofile Phantom back to its original state...

I know you are not trying to down him, I just want to clarify to those that might not have gone or that did go and are now reading this. It was not something he could help.

His chaperone did limit and screen them. There was a process by which the amount of questions were limited.

My hat is off to him. I had questions I wanted to ask at the Con but felt to self concious to ask them. I admire him for having the courage to ask them no matter how silly others may have thought they were. I personally asked a doozy to the PKI fellas the other day and got the idiot treatment.... in a joking manner.... but at least I asked it.
