A Possible Reason For A Drop In CP Attendance

Not only has attendence dropped at CP but I hear they're out of room ;-)
And didn't I hear that something big was sinking?

It is! Good thing Kinzle is going out with a bang in 2007 ;)
Not that it matters. Nothing will beat out the best wooden coaster ON THE PLANET...

^Meh, they will just start building over Lake Erie, Moosh. Didn't you hear about it? The the biggest rumor since the Magnum thing. ;-)

coasterdude 318 says What does efficiency have to do with safety?

I say why can't a seat belt be a little longer and be tightened down to fit everyone? I also said that MF doesn't have the ejector air that SMROS has, so when you ride the MF you don't get thrown out of your seat like you do on SMROS. All I know is that CP didn't have an issue with there seat belts until two people fell out of the ROS coasters at SF and that was in my opinion ride op incompitince.

Well I agree that it is not the main reason but I will say that the MF/Dragster belts have caused my brother-in-law to turn up his nose. He is exasperated with the ignorance of how they do the belts and the many lengths that are on the ride. We have gone for many years and ridden and with the latest he can not and I just make it. No, we did not get bigger the belts just got more varied. Well documented and they need to do something about it. Not the main reason we are looking to other parts but a big reason. Be consistent and appeal to all.
jwhoogs,

You can think what you want, but I tend to believe the people who actually investigated the S:ROS incident, who determined that the incidents in question were NOT solely (or even largely) due to operator error. Why can't a seatbelt be made a bit longer to accommodate more riders? Because it isn't safe. It's really as simple as that.

You implied that Six Flags needs tighter safety restrictions because they are less efficient. Six Flags may be less efficient in the operations department in general, but I still fail to see how that is related to safety.

Attendance is dropping because of a lack of return visits because too many of the guests are getting eaten alive by the May Flies (June Bugs I've also heard them referred to) along the shores of Lake Erie. Simple as that.

I just don't see how our regional economy is much worse this year than it was last year, or the year before, or the year before that.

One word: unemployment...

  • 1998: 4.0%
  • 1999: 3.8&
  • 2000: 3.7%
  • 2001: 5.2%
  • 2002: 6.2%
  • 2003: 7.1%
  • 2004: 7.1%

As you can see, Michigan's unemployment has grown at a staggering rate over the course of just a few years, and continues to be in the top 3 worst states for unemployment. No jobs = no money = no vacation.

...and the folks who HAVE jobs are gonna start paying more for health care. Provided, of course, they don't work for Delphi and aren't being asked to do their $24/hour job for $10.

NOTE: Severe fecal impaction may render the above words highly debatable.

Funny how spomething without a functioning mouth can "eat you alive".

Funny how some folks don't recognize a joke (no matter how bad) when they see it.

The seatbelt issue is a problem that has not been satisfactorily addressed, but it isn't related to attendance issues.

I disagree. I've spoken to more than a few people who aren't coaster dorks that refuse to go to CP (even with a free ticket I couldn't get rid of) because of the mere fear of being rejected at MF, TTD, or the woodies.

I think it's more of a problem than most folks are willing to admit.

While I agree that the GoES rejection issue is a serious one, I can't really see it having that profound an effect on attendance. Maybe a fraction of a percent, but not much more, IMO. I mean, there are other things to do there and I don't ever remember seeing that many considerably overweight people at CP.

When two of your top attractions have odd loading procedures relating to seat belts and one of them is usually broken, I think THAT has an effect on attendance. If I Phantom's Revenge was closed all season I would not have gone the seven times I went this year, (5 $7 evenings, 1 full day, 1 fright night.)

I don't know maybe I have made my four 1,000 mile trips to CP on special days, but the majority of people a see waiting on line for coasters are between the ages of 15-25 and are not excessively large people. IMHO, the size restrictions are unlikely to account for a statistically valid drop in attendance. It's the economy plan and simple.

Did you count the people who didn't come because they were turned away last time? Or what about those who were turned away and might not come again?

You don't have to be fat to have a problem getting on to MF, I have seen pretty average looking people have trouble, or have to leave the ride this year, and I only rode it maybe five times this season.
