1,250 Acre Theme Park!

New theme park called "Wild Country USA" or "Johnson Country USA" is in the developing stages and construction on the park is said to begin sometime in 2002.  The park is to be in Southwest Desoto County, Mississippi which is about 30 minutes south of Memphis, TN, the park will be just a few minutes from the Tunica casinos.  The park is said to open spring 2004 and there will be 8 operating roller coasters on opening day!  The article is on Screamscape, and there is also proofs of the park on the Memphis newspaper site in their archives section.  Go to www.gomemphis.com for the Memphis paper.  Below is the link for the Screamscape article.

Sounds like some great news and a very intriguing concept, but I think that 2 years from construction to finished product of the whole park plus 8 roller coasters is a little unrealistic.

This sure sound like a project with a ton of monetary backing...hopefully it's a success.

True, but you must remember that down in the Southern states constructions lasts year-round because of the mild climate in the winter.

This will be one of those parks that investors will back out or something and nothing will ever become of this.
If it is this far along, and they are just waiting to start construction, then why would investors back out? They could have backed out a long time ago during the conceptual period.

This is good news my friends! Its nice to read something positive, when most news today is SOOO negative. Can't wait to visit this place!

Did I mention, that I like coasters...

Yay, there can never be too many

The Yankees are still #1

this is an interesting concept which is very original but where is this park getting the money?  I read the article on Screamscape and they were not all top dollar rides, but, a B&M flyer or Vekoma flying dutchman + giavinola hyper(prob spelled that wrong, sorry) are expensive!  I can not imagine that this is all being paid by investors.  If it were true it will make a lot of money (due to patriotic theme and number of thrill attractions) and will be one of the most sought after parks in America.  I hope its true.  But I still can't help thinking that this is bogus...

hypercoasterman, you obviously had not checked out the articles on www.gomemphis.com where they have the newspaper articles from where they have already purchased the land and are done with the first 1250 acres of the park's planning.  This is for real!

That was one of my first questions as well...the source of the money.

The name Johnson Country USA sounds a bit bizarre.

WARNING: May be habit forming
We've seen this time and time again.  New park planned, new park never happens.  It would be wonderful if it does get built, but don't hold your breath.

Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.
The name for this park is going to be called Wild Country USA, not Johnson Country USA.  Johnson Country USA was just a joke name they threw out there, and it won't be called that.  This park will not use all of the 1250 acres right off the bat.  Eventually that land will hold clubs, hotels, and things like that in addition to the mammoth theme park and water park.  I know a few of the coasters that will be there on opening day, and you won't believe how great they sound.  You can believe me or not, but when the announcements are made you'll be praising me.  There will be a Intamin giga-coaster that is 350 feet in height.  There will be a launched Arrow 4d coaster inside a volcano on the Hawaiian-themed island of the park.  There will be launched dueling inverted B&M coasters.  Those are all I know are set in stone so far.  Like I said, believe it if you want, but it's the truth.
But why in the poorest state in the union?

Not everyone can have the "luxury" of living in Kentucky now can we there ravenguy98? I don't have any figures with me, but something tells me that with all of the casinos that Mississippi has (hell we're second in the nation behind Nevada) we aren't the poorest state in the union. Tell me this this, why not Mississippi? I've been hearing about this park for a while and it's beginning to seem like more and more of a reality to me. They may not have 8 coasters on opening day, and I probably won't live long enough to see all 50 states be built in the park, but I'm not complaining. At least we'll finally have a park in Mississippi. If this park materializes and actually gets built, I'll be there for opening day, season pass in hand, as well as a few other folks from around the "poorest" state in the union.
