Why do we ride?

Ok everyone. We all love roller coasters, right? Ok, now here's the stumper. WHY do we love them. Lot's of people say that they love the adrenaline rush and that they are fun. Well, I myself have not had a rush of adrenaline in probably over 3 or 4 years on a coaster. I myself don't know why I keep riding them. Maybe somebody's answer will give me an answer!

The feeling of euphoria. The fact that when you go over the top of the lift hill, non of the stresses in life matter, and non of the problems in life exist. You are no longer in control, and you have no choice but to sit back and enjoy the ride. In my opinion, this is what separates the coaster enthusiasts from the rest of the coaster riders. You could have only ridden one or two good coasters, yet still be an enthusiast because of how you feel when you get off of the coaster is different than how everyone else feels. So to me, it is the feeling of euphoria.

This is the way I look at it: Roller coasters take you 100's of feet up in the air, drop you, flip you, twist and turn you and just about everything else. People can't do that by themselves, so it's like they're not supposed to, and isn't it fun to do things you're not supposed to?

I like steal roller coasters because they give you the feeling of flying. And I like wooden coasters because they give you the airtime that every coaster enthusiast craves.

we all don't have the correct answer for the ? but myself i ride coasters because the are very fun as what many would say and i ride because it gives me a sence of feeling like you're flying or something and you have to be some sort of a dare devil to ride things like that. so it's kind of like a rush.

Because we do! It's nice to be part of a community of enthusiasts that gets some recognition from the rest of the world as being "out there" - just tell someone who isn't an enthusiast how many times you've ridden a particular ride and watch their jaw drop. There's a lot of people that wouldn't ride, for whatever reason, even once. Without waxing philosophical, it's fun! :)

I ride them (and other thrill rides) simply "because". Mainly, I like them... I like having fun. There is no philosphical answer to this. Simply something I like to do.

Unfortunately, I am starting to believe that many people ride them simply to complain about them (you know the ones... "That ride was terrible"... "It is no good compared to [insert coaster name here],"... "it used to be good, but now it is 2 years old and I need something newer, faster, taller to keep me occupied." (sigh)

Ditto SLfake and that goes for everything you have stated here!The few seconds or minutes that i am riding any ride i forget everything in the world that bothers me,it is like mental therapy because my mind gets a break from thinking about everything that is wrong around me.If i spend the rest of my life analyzing theme parks,it would totally ruin the whole reason i'm there.

Sorry Dennis...Not even the first time I rode Millenium Force. I think that if the lift hill was slower, and I had more time to realize how high it was, I would have had a rush, but to me, it was too similar to Superman at SFNE. MF isn't one of my favs...sorry!

Honestly I think the topic question is redundant.Its like asking a smoker why he smokes or why alcoholics drink ? You will never get a straight answer, with the only exception is that coasters don't ruin your health. Besides, coaster addictions are usually sparked by the person's first ride. So most of the time, a person always liked the feel of coasters, but never realized it until an actual ride.

I would say then that you're not a Coaster Freak as your screen name says but rather an Adrenaline Freak. Perhaps you should try skydiving, mountain climbing, etc. and give up on coasters.

I ride coasters because it's fun. I don't need an adrenaline rush. Do I get a rush from coasters - sometimes, but, fun is what I want and what I get from coasters.

FloridaCoasterRider comments are right on for me. I go to a park whenever I start to feel a little burned out at work. Its hard to think about work or anything else when your on a coaster. Its a safe (and fun) way of escaping for a few hours.

FloridaCoasterRider, u put it perfect. It's like just letting go. Also the way they work and and all that amazes me.

A good ol' roller coaster ride is the perfect way to unwind after a bad day... It's even a great place to go with your girlfriend! (or boyfriend for all of the girls out there) I can' think of anything more fun than going to SFoG with my girl...Sharing drinks, cotton candy, sitting on the front row together... *sobs* ;) BEAUTIFUL TIMES!

How bout the adrenaline rush you get at the top of the hills. or in some cases. when you get launched :)
