I heard the park must have 6 coasters and at least 1 million visitors a year to get the Six Flags name. I heard this from an employee at Great Escape. Doesn't SFDL only have 5 coasters? Just wondering if this was true or a myth? Thanks

Nobody is supposed to know this but here is what REALLY makes a Six Flags.
1.Annoying cartoon chareters
2.Ride names that no thought whatsoever went into (Supermam, Batman.... the list goes on and on and on).
3.Annoying ads on radio and TV
4.Ruining classic rides (The Rocket)
5.Flying cell phones
6.Having no clue if it is a ride or a rollercoaster
7.Shuts down rides and doesn't tell GP why, heck I don't even think the ride ops know why.
8.Did I say flying cell phones?
9.Rude ride ops.
10.Claiming to have the most attraction in the world at all of the parks(Note:Water Fountains count as attraction).
Well know you all know what makes a Six Flags a Six Flags.

They have to have six flags in the front of the park. But with all honesty I really don't have a clue!

Bored ride operators that don't care about capacity.
A combination of clones and the occasional unique rides.
Batman and Superman-themed rides.
Poor excuses for "Stunt Shows"
Overpriced food even FOR amusement parks.
And I even kinda LIKE Six Flags parks ;)

Well, Steel Phantom 1991-2000 and GregLeg pretty much summed it up.

I dont know, but SFMW seems fairly unsixflags to me, more like a zoo with a couple of great coasters at the front gate.

Hey Coasterpunk. Just to clear it up, any park can be a six flags park if Six Flags feels they can make a profit. The thing about 6 coasters and 1 million visiters is B.S. Look at Kentucky Kingdom's coaster count. The employee at Great Escape has no clue, which is probably why he/she works at Six Flags.

By the way, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom has only 3 coasters.

Kentucky Kingdom has more than that.
Roadrunner Express
Thunder Run
Twisted Sisters (could count as 2)
Chang
Roller Skater
If you count Twisted Sisters (Lola & Stella) I count six coasters.

Actually you are correct Coasterpunk, sorry for the mis-info. Twisted Sisters is only one coaster just as Gemini and Racer(PKI) are only one. I am sure there are other Six Flags parks that have less than 6 coasters. I am pretty sure Six Flags Wyandot Lake has far less than 6.

According to this site, Wyandot Lake has only 1 coaster. So as I stated earlier, the employee at Great Escape is mis-informed as well. Good catch on my mis-info on Six Flags KK.

IT is not called Six Flags Wyandot Lake. They just simply own it. It is just a waterpark at this moment. (with one coaster)

Okay first of all I will admitt that I am a Six Flags brat, born and raised. And no, I dont like what has happend within the last 3 years of all these lackluster "Premier" owned parks being branded with the six flags name. But to clear some things up.
1. All SF parks do NOT have 6 flags outside the park (SFKK only has one HUGE american flag)
2. What cartoon characters ARENT annoying (CF=Peanuts, Disney=M.Mouse, IOA=Marvel, etc...)
3. Most chains clone their rides and/or names (Disney=Space Mountain, Paramount=Top Gun, CF=S&S Towers, Universal=Back to the Future: The Ride) The only reason SF looks so bad is because they have like 37 different parks instead of less than 10 like the other chains.
4. Unless I'm mistaken (and I might be) Twisted Sisters are TWO separate coasters. Each has a unique layout ala Gwazi (lion & tiger) and Dueling Dragons (and everyone seems to accept that Fire & Ice are count as TWO coasters)
5. The Great Escape and Wyandot Lake are NOT Six Flags parks. Yes they are owned by SFI, but they do not carry the SF name (nor are they included in the SF season passes).
6. The ride op come from the area the park is in so, except for Disney and CP who seem to bus people in, the parks have to make do with the available pool.
7. Cell Phones are evil devices and must be destroyed. (But c'mon, how can you blame SF for that?)
8. Now orignally the six flags were to stand for the six themed areas of the parks (see SFoT, SFoG and SFoMid-America [now SFStL]). That has since changed because most of the parks either have more than six areas, or were bought after that mindset had been eraticated.
hope that helps a little bit
many thrills

Six Flags has become like MacDonalds. We bash them at the same time were lapping it up like water. My only problem with Six Flags is one of the things you mentioned. They own far more parks than they can handle, and half of them get the shaft. There's more to running a park than breaking records and stacking up your coaster count. SFOT, SFMM, SFGam are well run parks. SFO, SFKK, SFDL, SFAW are jokes(sorry if I offended fans of those parks). If you can't give all your parks the same treatment, stop buying them, that's just greed and capitalism at it's worst. But I agree with you in one respect, to brand all Six Flags parks bad when you haven't been to the parks that represent the other side, is unfair. If you could only visit Dorney Park, what would you think of CF? hymmmmm.

SimC:
You are exactly right. I think they are spreading themselves too thin. They need to take a year off of coasters at all the parks and divert the money to training, theming, and facilities (i.e. bathroom) improvements. What they fail to realize is that ppl will still patronize the parks if they have a "down" year. I mean SFGAm didnt get a new coaster this year, but I dont think their numbers are significantly down (though I dont have the facts in front of me to prove it). BTW: what are the cedar fair parks besides CP, DP and KBF?
