Son of Beast Restraints

I didn't think they were all too uncomfortable. If you want uncomfortable restraints on a ride just go ride a flat ride at The Pavilion in Myrtle Beach, SC called Topspin.

well.. anyone who's seen me knows I'm not an incredibly thin person. so the restraints were actually pretty uncomfortable from the start. I think that instead of two bars, one on each side of the lap bar, they should either use 1 bar in the middle (like MF) or just use standard woodie lapbars. (since I was at PKI yesterday, Beast and Racer spring to mind)

Then tell me why some of the more INTENSE coasters only have lapbars and no safety belts??
Because if you had a brain you would know that its only certain PARKS that require them on the ride and not the coaster itself.Ask someone who has built them.YOU DO NOT NEED the safety belts to hold you in.If you were any kind of coaster rider you would know this.Ive been riding coasters for sixteen years and I havent seen safety belts up until the last few years and they are only a mere precaution.If you were to fall out of a coaster its because of the lapbar,not the safety belts and the way they are made and handled,they wouldnt hold you in anyway.

Seat belts are there as a back-up, in case your restraint fails. Restraints DO fail. Ask around and I'm sure you'll hear plenty of stories of B&M inverted and stand-up restraints, not to mention a great number of Vekoma SLC restraints, fail and release. It's also happened on Magnum a number of times to people I was sitting with.

Breaking this rule isn't cool or funny. You're putting people's lives in danger, including your own. I have a brain, thank you, that's why I keep the belt loose but buckled.

SON OF BEAST restraints are great. I found no problem with them at all!

2 things, I found the SOB restraints somewhat uncomfortable. The problem for me was it didn't hit my waist, but right above my stomach, where my chestplate ends. When I pulled it down, I thought it would come to my waist, and it hit my stomach and stopped, and was tight. I think next time I'll try not to pull it down as far. 2nd, I agree that the seat belts are kind of pointless with the other safety measures there, but I do know that lap bars can come undone. Has happened to me, luckily, on a small, wooden coaster that didn't even really need lap bars. Because of this, I always fasten it, just not very tight. I still get plenty of airtime, and if by chance that bar comes up, I'm still not going to go anywhere

All I have to say is that the SoB restraints are alot more comfortable for taller people that the ones on the Villan.

Have restraints ever failed on a B&M hyper?? I know that those only have bars. I got a feeling once those are down, they are down. They probably just can't be undone until you get back to the station. But then how do they get people out in case of a stall? I know on Shivering Timbers, there is like a button type thing on the side of the train, and a metal rail come out and pushes it in when in the station. I tried to see if I could touch it, I couldn't thank GOD!!!!

B&M hypers are an interesting beast, because quite frankly gravity always keeps the bar snug, like it or not. Because of the "bucket" seats, combined with the sharp angle of the bar toward you, you can't really cheat the bar, and if it failed, it would still stay in your lap until it hit the final brakes.

Just got back from riding SoB this morning...got one thing to say. OUCH.

I'm very tall, 6'9" and have some difficulty riding most coasters (somehow I make it through), but NOTHING like what I experienced today at PKI.

I had to, let's see here, physically "force" my legs in between the bars that hold your lap cushion in place, and they were twisted under me and pressed VERY hard against the bars (pulled down) AND the wall of the car.

Well, for those of you who have ridden SoB, it's a great ride, but not exactly smooth, and every inch of that track was a new experience in pain for me. I couldn't enjoy ANY of it due to the intense pain and I'm a bit perplexed as to why there are new cars and restraints on this ride that I have never seen before.

Any comments from other tall riders?

Doug, I'm not that tall (6' 2") but since about two thirds of that is legs, I can appreciate your pain. I think they need to redesign the u-shaped bar into a T-bar like the intamin trains. Then at least the sides of your legs wont end up with "bar imprints".

Jeff-On the B&M hypers, I don't think gravity alone, would hold the restraint in place.

I've only been on Apollo's, but the airtime there is crazy. If the lab bar weren't locked into place, I'm pretty sure I'd go flying out of the train.

See, I don't think so, because the motion is pushing you up and toward the seat, neither of which would get the bar to swing away from you. I found that on both Apollo and Bull that the lapbar was significantly tighter by the time I got back to the station. Fortunately, the bars on these rides give you massive air no matter where they're set (in other words, you don't have to cheat them).
