Six Flags woodies

What's with Six Flags and destroying woodies? SFNE's infamous Cyclone is getting a major reprofiling job because of extensive wear to the trains. It seems like they love to take old woodies like Colossus and Cyclone and destroy them. They have started to build good woodies like Roar and Villain. What about The Comet at Great Escape? Will that coaster be destroyed when that park earns Six Flags status?

I heard someplace that Colossus used to be a much wilder ride until some fat chick (not very P.C., I know) was tragically killed on it. Apparantly she was too big for her restraint to latch, the stupid ride op let her ride anyway, and she was ejected on a massive airtime hill. I've even heard that you can see sections of track that the trains never travel on. As a caveat, I've never seen that myself.

That it completely true. I think Joyrides has a picture of the double up double down with a block brake just sat on top of it. I did hear a rumor that they might remove those brakes.

Six Flags is in it for the money. If they need to fix a ride and retrofit it to make it more reliable they will. However on the comment of the comet i do not think that it really has any problems from what I hear.

AAAAAHHHHHH! The SFNE "Riverside' Cyclone. I loved that ride last season. One Helluva drop in the backseat. I think it gives the best out of control ride I've ridden. I thought it just got new PTC in 2000? Best looking wood trains I ever seen BTW too.

Don't forget to add the reprofiling of SFA's Wild One to the list. I believe it was the turnaround that got tamed.

The Comet is another great ride. I personally don't see how they could tame this ride. Maybe trims on the turnarounds? With too many brakes I think it would cause many rollbacks due to it's design (high turnaround, bunny hops, high turnaround, bunny hops).

The Villian, Big Dipper and Roar are SF woodies that I rode. You can add a few more SF woodies to that list as well.

Don't forget, Viper at Great America is a pretty good woodie too. However, from what I have heard, they have ruined American Eagle by not racing them and putting too many brakes on it.

I was planning on visiting SFNE this summer to ride the Cyclone, and now I'm crossing it off my list of parks to visit because of the Cyclone modifications. That ride was the ONLY reason I was planning to go, and now I don't believe it will be worth the journey out there. Too bad.

Coasters...the best natural buzz available.

Colossus was a very wicked ride that needed to be tamed down for the GP. Though, I think think that they over did it a little bit. A -2 G hill followed by an awesome double up was just to much for most. Massive bruises an your legs was a common result of riding.

All but a few hills were changed. The largest change being the hill after the 1st turn-around. It was lowered about 20 feet. The double up used to look a lot different as well.

Now, the break-run over the double down...that is just lame. It run ruins the beautiful lines of the coaster. Not to mention the ride.

The reprofiling of the turnaround on the WildOne at SFA, along with the new trim brake before the helix is mainly a maintenece thing. The stress put on the ride at those two points is tremendous, and wood will only flex so many times before having to be replaced. Also, ROAR is running better than ever. They even grease it occasionaly.

I have video footage of SFMM's Psyclone when it first opened, and footage of last seasons operation. The amount of brakes added is unbelievable. The ride is now rougher than ever, and the brakes seem to have made it this way.

As for Colossus, it used to be an awesome ride, now it's about as thrilling as Disney's Mickey Mouse Train.

Even though I'm not a big fan of woodies, I do agree that it is sad to see a clasic go, I just wish that Six Flags would put the time and money onto restoring these elderly beasts, I'm sure that they would get their money back in time.

SFO has two great woodies, Big Dipper and Villain, and one crappy woodie, Raging Wolf Bobs. RWB has no brakes, and SF didn't ruin it.

Six Flags isn't the only one to ruin woodies, though. Cedar Fair has ruined a great one, that rhymes with Bean Freak.

You should have ridden the riverside cyclone back in the 80's when it first opened up. It was, up until this year , my favorite wood coaster.

Metrock nailed the Colossus modifications. The extensive reprofile was done after its first season, the mid-course block was done much more recently. The real tragedy about the mid-course is that it was done to make a 3 train operation, per side. But, I NEVER see both sides running, and usually ONLY 2 trains on the one side that IS open, thereby defeating the puropse of the block!!! Another double-down wasted!

Hopefully SFMM's Psyclone will be better in '01, it is getting 100% re-tracked. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will also get some real rolling stock.

Um, that's mighty strange of you to not go to SFNE because of this "rumored" taming of Cyclone (I say rumored because no one has even ridden the darn thing yet after the retracking!) seeing as how SFNE has one of, if not THE best coasters ever built, Superman Ride of Steel. You'd be a fool not to go because of this little Cyclone reprofile/retracking, as you would be missing out on my personal #2 coaster, and most peoples' #1 coaster, SRoS.

Canceling a trip before people can even comment on how the Cyclone rides seems like a mighty hasty decision.

ok mooreOn, cyclone is not ruined! it is running faster, running smoother and is worth the trip down here. everybody do the same.

The texas giant was a great SF woodie and it was built in-house. They also couldn't make Twister II any crappier because its such a crappy ride in the first place.
