Yeah on a scale if one to douche they both rank. At least the Cadilliac commercial is honest.

PS I drive a Ford, and love it. But I think they both rank differently, yet both douchy.

I'm all for buying yourself nice things that you've earned. I'm not for people of means being pretentious and materialistic.

Pretentiousness is often in the eyes of the beholder. And as a country, we are incredibly materialistic--with or without means.

I know the Ford thing ripped off the Cadillac thing, but to me the Cadillac thing just sounded like a ripoff of a Denis Leary rant from 20 years ago, which is why I felt it was ineffective.

I wonder if any of these ads actually change peoples minds as to what vehicle to buy. Does anyone actually watch TV and say "hey, that prick's right! I'm gonna buy a Caddy!" or "hey, that hippie's right, Ford is groovy!"

You spelled "awesome" incorrectly there.

I think that about ALL advertising, yet it's as ubiquitous as ever...so what do I know?

I totally agree with respect to the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of all advertising. Billions of dollars are spent on it so someone must think it works.

If it didn't, CoasterBuzz would have closed a decade ago.

Or at least if someone didn't think it did.

Ok hands up - who is clicking on the Fiber One ad? The random on-line ads are completely ignored by me (except in this case in which I had to scroll all the way to the top to see what was being hawked). Seriously - Fiber One fruit chews???

Ha! Fiber One? Join the club.

No, seriously. Join the club and you won't see any ads.

Save yourself the $20 and ignore the ads is my motto!

I don't pay the $20 to skip the ads (most other sites I read have them so ignoring them is pretty easy). I pay the fee to attend coaster events.

I pay to get rid of the ads and support the site, since it's been my favorite online hangout for the last 12 years. The coaster events are a nice perk, but I've only been to two.

Now the ads are making me laugh. Domino's has fried chicken?

The funny thing about online ads for me is that increasingly they show me things I've been looking at anyway.

In many cases I was looking because I just purchased (so showing me that ad for the next month after I bought the product seems like a huge waste).

Or it's something I was looking at because I'm going to purchase it soon. (so showing me the ad isn't influencing anything - I've already decided to purchase)

To me, advertising really makes the most sense when it shows me an item I may be interested in that I was previously unaware of. Beyond that, you're not going to change my habits or decisions with an advertisement.

Yeah, most recently I was shown ads to purchase United tickets to Jacksonville, when in fact I just bought United tickets to Jacksonville.

"I just bought United tickets to Jacksonville, but gosh darnit, I think I want to buy some United tickets to Jacksonville! Thanks, internet."

I love a well-crafted ad or commercial. But I have approximately never made a purchase in response to an ad.

I usually shop around for the best price; aside from Coca-Cola and Lamy fountain pens, I'm not brand loyal.

The club is $25, and thank you for your support. :) I'm amazed at how fast the site is without ads, and sad at how it isn't with the ads.

Oh, I think advertising is very effective, especially for introducing products or services that are new to me. If ads are delivered in a thoughtful, clever, or hilarious way, more the better.

I have no intention of buying a Cadillac or a Ford, but I've thought a lot about that young lady in Detroit. Does that count? Mission accomplished?

As for banner ads, in general, I also find they tend to be for things I've already purchased or looked into. As we're looking to remodel our house and cruising online for ideas, all of a sudden I'm getting those ads. I bought Flor tiles a while back and now they show up. My Disney vacation led to a barrage of banners. And that makes sense- just like email ads, companies know if I'm already a satisfied customer I'm their easiest mark. If I could just get Hawaiian Airlines to quit, it's just pissing me off!

As I am a proud member and supporter of Coasterbuzz, I can't say what the banners here are trying to do to me. Or... for me.
