I know the Ford thing ripped off the Cadillac thing, but to me the Cadillac thing just sounded like a ripoff of a Denis Leary rant from 20 years ago, which is why I felt it was ineffective.
I wonder if any of these ads actually change peoples minds as to what vehicle to buy. Does anyone actually watch TV and say "hey, that prick's right! I'm gonna buy a Caddy!" or "hey, that hippie's right, Ford is groovy!"

You spelled "awesome" incorrectly there.

I think that about ALL advertising, yet it's as ubiquitous as ever...so what do I know?
The funny thing about online ads for me is that increasingly they show me things I've been looking at anyway.
In many cases I was looking because I just purchased (so showing me that ad for the next month after I bought the product seems like a huge waste).
Or it's something I was looking at because I'm going to purchase it soon. (so showing me the ad isn't influencing anything - I've already decided to purchase)
To me, advertising really makes the most sense when it shows me an item I may be interested in that I was previously unaware of. Beyond that, you're not going to change my habits or decisions with an advertisement.
The club is $25, and thank you for your support. :) I'm amazed at how fast the site is without ads, and sad at how it isn't with the ads.

Oh, I think advertising is very effective, especially for introducing products or services that are new to me. If ads are delivered in a thoughtful, clever, or hilarious way, more the better.
I have no intention of buying a Cadillac or a Ford, but I've thought a lot about that young lady in Detroit. Does that count? Mission accomplished?
As for banner ads, in general, I also find they tend to be for things I've already purchased or looked into. As we're looking to remodel our house and cruising online for ideas, all of a sudden I'm getting those ads. I bought Flor tiles a while back and now they show up. My Disney vacation led to a barrage of banners. And that makes sense- just like email ads, companies know if I'm already a satisfied customer I'm their easiest mark. If I could just get Hawaiian Airlines to quit, it's just pissing me off!
As I am a proud member and supporter of Coasterbuzz, I can't say what the banners here are trying to do to me. Or... for me.
