One of the biggest surprises at Comic-Con thus far came on Thursday during the Disney panel, when Guillermo del Toro came out and announced that he would be writing, producing and maybe directing a remake of "The Haunted Mansion." Del Toro joked that they weren't returning Eddie Murphy's calls for this, referencing Murphy's 2003 comedy.

I wouldn't call it a remake as much of a, "Wow did that one suck, so let's do it right this time."

Del Toro abandoned two years of work on the Hobbit for this?
Del Toro abandoned two years on the Hobbit because most of that time was spent sitting around doing nothing. He was putting his career on hold indefinitely for the off chance the movie studios stopped bickering long enough to make the movie. I don't blame him for wanting out.
From everything I've read, Del Toro is a Disney freak and claims to even have a Haunted Mansion themed room in his house. Since he specializes in horror and fantastical imagery, seems like the perfect project for him.
That's not the box office I've been watching. Up and Toy Story 3 have made about a bazillion dollars. Maybe even two bazillion. Each!

Alice was proof that even if the movie sucks, really bad, anything with Depp nowadays will be a major success.
It was also proof that Tim Burton is no longer a genius. ;)

Tim Burton keeps making the same movie, with same recylced Elfman score (da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da) over and over. The first half-dozen or so were fun, but now it's gotten incredibly boring.

I did too. I thought it was closer to the original source material. I watched most of Alice, but wasn't impressed with it myself.
I think Burton has been bored. He needs to stop making adaptations of other works and go back to being creative and do something like Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice (Though I did like Big Fish and James & the Giant Peach).
I actually liked his 2 Batman movies and hold them apart from the (incredible) Nolan Batmen when comparing.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
