Park at MOA becomes Nickelodeon Universe with new rides

Posted Tuesday, July 24, 2007 1:28 PM | Contributed by Jeff

If it wasn't already, Mall of America is about to become center of the universe. Nickelodeon Universe. Changes at the park will go much deeper than the name. Mall of America is investing about $30 million in park improvements including four new rides, healthy food options and a high-tech ticketing system.

Having personally seen the drawings, the Half Pipe will indeed be an Intamin half pipe. It will go underneath the Ripsaw coaster and will require the reconfiguring of a couple of it's stupports.

The Spring ride will likely not be an S&S. Hence the billing as "spring ride" My guess is that it will either come from ARM (you may have seen thier portable "super shot" models) or from an Italian manufacturer. It will have 4 seats on all 4 sides.

We will also be recieving kiddie bumper cars in the space currently occupied by Hunter's Paradise.

Finally, they will be replacing Red Barron with a similar ride that adults can ride. It will be themed to a Nick property.

Construction starts in August!*** This post was edited by CoasterCameron 7/24/2007 11:34:35 PM ***

"In an effort to put kids first during the transformation process, Mall of America and Nickelodeon established the first ever MOA/Nickelodeon Kids' Panel, consisting of 32 kids between ages 8 and 12. This group of "experts" will meet monthly for interactive sessions to help with the design and creative process. The panel is intended to bring curiosity, wild imaginations and humor to Nickelodeon Universe."

How sweet is that?

Cameron, where did you see the images?

I guess I'm a little surprised they aren't billing the expansion as two coasters instead of only one if it's an Intamin instead of a Disk-O.

Not saying I doubt you. But a looky-look would be nice...

Been on the "MegaDisk'O" yet? Avatar or Survivor? They're considerably more fun. I'd have LOVED to try the Cosmic Chaos, but it was DDM on our second day, and I was too busy riding wood to get on it the first night...

The Half-Pipe sounded like a good concept....wasn't *nearly* as much fun in action...just MY opinion.... ;)

I was getting the registration page with links from here, but I could get thru with links from google. If you are having trouble I would suggest googling it.

Edit: ^nope, just the one. I hope I like the half pipe, but it could not be any worse than the one at MtO.*** This post was edited by RavenTTD 7/25/2007 12:24:44 PM ***

The *problem* I had with the Half-pipe was the seating configuration...when you LAUNCH a ride, it helps if everyone is seated facing forward. But the way the ride is designed, at most one-fourth of the riders face that way, and the rest suffer from either neck-strain or headbanging - since I was facing sideways, I got the latter...

Cosmic Chaos LOOKED like it did a better job, with better capacity...reliability notwithstanding, LOL.

My problem with the Half-Pipe is that it was dead on my only visit to SFEG.
So was Twister II. Sure, it was open and I rode it. But that didn't help much.

Well, if both rides suck, at least the half pipe is another credit. ;)

I guess my biggest concern now--by FAR--is that the park risks losing its 'outdoor park, just with a roof' feel to become a Cedar Fair cement-and-steel-girder jungle. Given some of the floral displays they've put on lately in 'the park', it's a remote fear. But I can't deny the nagging worry...

The Half Pipe is a surprisingly fun ride, but like Gator said, head-bangange is an issue when you're facing sideways.

I've ridden the Halfpipe at SFEG. I thought it was OK. The couple times I rode it it didn't really spin much. And the line is way slow.

i got this from a website: a fourth coaster taking a step away from the superficial family-friendly nature of the other three, was announced late last year and is still expected to debut next year. That yet-unnamed ride is a "Euro-Fighter" model from German manufacturer Gerstlauer expected to feature a vertical lift, 95-degree drop, and two inversions. Plankton's Plunge, perhaps? Only time will tell.

Not to start a rumor, but the Mall of America does have a large underwater area that would be perfect for SpongeBob. By bringing in SpongeBob & Patrick and making admission to Underwater World free, it may be a great way to bring in more visitors. I know I’ve been to the mall many many times but never paid to see Underwater World.

i just found that from a website and it would be a great idea bc ive been to underwater world and it could get some help.
